Recap: Voltes V: Legacy, Episode 12 – Sanib Pwersa
Zardoz and Friends are taken aback by the arrival of Voltes V.
Voltes V shows its capabilities by grabbing a Boazanian saucer and hurling it back into the sky, taking out other flying saucers in the process. Zardoz orders his generals to ensure they embarrass these Earthlings as much as possible.
The Voltes team carefully make their way through the ravaged streets of a futuristic Manila and have a stare-down with Dokugaga. The team hype each other up with Little Jon ensuring them that he’ll be perfectly fine.
Voltes V and Dokugaga charge toward each other and engage in battle. It appears to be an evenly matched fight. But Zardoz yawns and says he’s bored. He orders Draco to finish this now.
Dokugaga gets in several huge hits on Voltes V, hitting Big Bert’s Machine the hardest. Jamie detects some bio warning signs for him, but he says he’s alright. Voltes V, however, is not. It experiences critical errors from Dokugaga’s attacks before getting blasted and hurled across the city.
Jamie checks again and everyone’s vital signs are good. Little Jon tells his Kuya Bert that he feels a bit dizzy, but is okay. Big Bert suggests Chain Knuckles and it manages to get in a big hit on Dokugaga.
Up next is the Ultraelectromagnetic Whip and Top. Steve says this is Mark’s specialty and leaves the attack to him. Mark snaps Voltes V’s whips and sends a pair of tops straight at Dokugaga.
Dokugaga blasts one of the tops, but the other hits it right in the arm, slicing it off. The surviving top returns back to Voltes V’s chest and Steve says it’s time to finish this.
Steve calls for the Laser Sword as Zardoz and Friends watch in bewilderment. Zuhl points out that they seem to be losing somehow.
The Laser Sword and Voltes V get charged up by lightning in the sky. Dokugaga lets out artillery from its mouth and shoots at Voltes V, but they are able to use the sword to repel the attack.
The Voltes team charge forward toward Dokugaga. And to Zardoz’s shock, the Voltes team leaps up and strikes down on Dokugaga, slicing it in half. Voltes V gets out of the way and does its pose as Dokugaga explodes behind them.
Steve, Mark, Jamie, Big Bert and Little Jon celebrate and congratulate each other on their huge first win. Jamie says she is so happy she could hug each of them right now. Big Bert says not to worry because Kuya Steve will give a huge hug later.
The Boazanians cannot believe what has just happened.
Zardoz says Earth might have won the battle, but not the war. No planet has ever defeated the Boazanian Empire.
Later, Zardoz privately scolds his three generals. He can’t believe they have come all this way and been embarrassed so much that they couldn’t dare show their faces back on Boazania. Not to mention how they can face the Emperor. General Draco says this is only the beginning and they just need to study their enemy a bit more.
General Zuhl seconds the motion, but Zardoz whips his sword out and points it right at him, telling him to shut up. General Zandra speaks up and says she takes responsibility for not having foreseen Earth’s new weapon. She will fully accept any punishment Zardoz sees fit for her.
Zardoz, however, says he will give them one more chance. They will retreat for now in order to prepare their next attack.
The Voltes team make their triumphant return to the command center to everyone’s applause.
The Voltes team salute and General Armstrong welcomes them back, saying it is mission accomplished. He tells them to be at ease and says their parents are waiting for big hugs. The Armstrong Bros hurry over to Mama Armstrong while Jamie meets her father who is very proud of her.
Mark has no choice but to watch the family reunions alone. Dr. Smith sees him and calls him over.
Dr. Smith puts his hand on Mark’s shoulder and says he did a great job and made him very proud. Mark smiles and bows in gratitude to the good doctor.
What?! A MaGMCM? On a Filipino television series? Why yes! That’s exactly what this final scene was! And I was taken aback by it as much as Zardoz and Co. were shocked by Dokugaga’s defeat.
Definitely the perfect way to end this episode. I really started tearing up there. The best episode of Voltes V: Legacy so far, no question.
Obviously the huge action sequences. Finally the big battle. How amazing was that? Quite thrilling. It was as exciting as any big mecha or robo battle I’ve seen on a regular toku episode lately. Heck, even a bit more visually striking than a Toei toku movie or big-budget Hollywood movies that tend to rely too heavily on cartoony-looking CGI.
What makes Voltes V: Legacy a bit different is how grounded these scenes feel. Even for such a fantastical scenario (I mean, big robos fighting in the middle of a futuristic-looking Philippine city? Lol), there is a feeling of being grounded and realistic. Like, how else to describe it? Something like it is able to immerse you into the moment. In a way that has you hanging on every dodge, and swerve and hit during the battle. You get lost in the around ten minutes-long battle, forgetting that you’re actually watching a TV show.
It’s really a great experience and definitely something different from the usual things you see on Philippine TV.
It was really just so exciting to watch. Can’t even describe the experience in words. Just sit back and absorb the action.
And then they finish the episode off with that emotional moment. Not just the Armstrong and Robinsons sharing a hug, but especially Dr. Smith calling Mark over to tell him he’s proud of him. Really wonderful and definitely tear-inducing for me. The excitement of the action and ending with that sincere moment was the perfect combination.
I’m looking forward to see Mark’s story play out as someone who is definitely not a PK like the rest of his teammates. Lol But this was also a great first step for the others to also begin their character journeys for this series.
Overall, I think it was worth the wait. Yeah, we could’ve picked up the pace a little. But all of that is forgotten now that we have this Episode 12 to applaud and enjoy. Really an incredible achievement for everyone involved.
Voltes V: Legacy Episode 12 is available on GMA Network’s official YouTube channel:
However, it is restricted to the Philippines only. Hopefully it will be made available worldwide soon!
I’ve seen people talk about how people worldwide should subscribe to GMA Pinoy TV in order to watch the series. I’d recommend that if you are interested in watching lots of Filipino programming. But if you only want to watch Voltes V: Legacy, I don’t think it’d be a good investment. Especially since you can’t watch the series on demand anyway. GMA Pinoy TV is a linear, premium TV channel on most cable and satellite systems.
