Recap: Voltes V: Legacy, Episode 25 – Assassination

At the quarters, Jamie visits Mark. He gives her some attitude and says he doesn’t want to be bothered while resting. But Jamie has something for him. She asked her father’s staff to help her acquire photos of his parents from their former neighbors.

Mark asks her why she would do such a thing. Jamie says she understands him and his pain. That’s why she wanted to help take away even a little of that pain.

After Jamie leaves, Mark is very emotional when he pins his parents’ photos next to a photo of Alpha. He introduces his parents to Alpha, the only family he has left in the world. And he introduces Alpha to his parents.

Elsewhere, Eva catches Spc. Apable on the phone promising to give someone recordings and personal information about the Voltes team. Eva immediately confronts him, accusing him of being the spy. But he explains that he is not a Boazanian spy, rather a spy for a defense contractor who wants to know what’s going on inside CBF. He offers to split the money he is earning from the job with Eva in exchange for her silence. But Eva wants him to help remove Jamie from the Voltes team instead.

Later, Eva heads back to RAD and the others notice she is in a much happier mood. She is happy her prayers have been answered and her dream will come true.

Spc. Apable is now camouflaged in the hills outside the base, armed with a sniper rifle. He aims and shoots at Jamie who is training in her room. But she bends down at the perfect time to avoid the bullet.

Jamie storms into RAD and accuses Eva of being a criminal and trying to assassinate her. The others, however, confirm that Eva has been here the entire time.

“Napahiya ka na naman!” Eva gloats. “Nagmukha ka na naman tanga!”

PJ suggests Jamie report the incident instead. Eva thinks Jamie is just trying to garner attention. Jamie goes to Dr. Smith and Papa Robinson who is absolutely livid. Steve and Mark quickly arrive as well and Jamie says she’s fine. She thanks them for their concern.

Dr. Smith ensures they will get to the bottom of this. Just then, Spc. Apable enters the room and Commander Robinson introduces him to them as Jamie’s new bodyguard. Jamie says she can take care of herself, but Mark and Steve says not to be stubborn. She needs to remain safe. Papa Robinson declares this an order.

Steve, Mark, Spc. Apable and two officers accompany Jamie to her room. She insists that she doesn’t need all this.

Spc. Apable stops Jamie and says he must check her room before she walks in. Mark offers to stay with Jamie tonight, but Steve says he knows Jamie longer so he is more trustworthy. Mark asks if that means he is not and the two begin to argue. Jamie tells them to stop and reminds them that she hates being treated like she’s weak.

“I am not that type of girl!”

Jamie says thank you for the offer, but she’ll be fine. She will take out the assassin herself if they come back.

Spc. Apable comes out with an all clear. Mark and Steve are again overprotective and Jamie tells them she is not a damsel in distress. Jamie heads inside and the boys stare at each other before going to their own rooms.

Meanwhile in his own room, Big Bert is about to enjoy six meals. But the main gate calls to say that a Judy has arrived for him. Big Bert hurries out and he and Judy get some food on the mainland. They make plans for Judy to come visit on base tomorrow.

Spc. Apable secretly meets with Eva who thinks it’s funny that he is in charge of Jamie’s security. Apable wishes he do something else, especially when there are a lot of eyes on Jamie now. Eva reminds him of their deal, but Apable says if he is caught, he will bring Eva down with him. Eva remains defiant. But Apable says he will stick to their deal as long as they let things die down for now.

When Jamie leaves, Apable seems to stop the audio recording on his watch.

Steve meets with Dr. Smith to talk about Jamie’s safety. Steve thinks the suspect is someone in CBF.

Meanwhile in the Skull, Zandra wants to see the list of all the Boazanians who have accompanied them on this expedition. Zuhl knows it’s because she is jealous that Zardoz has someone else he holds in close regard over her.

Later, Zardoz meets with his spy……

Episode Thoughts

ZOMG!!!!!!11111!!!1!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT IS SHOCKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lol Just kidding. We all knew it was Judy. But anyway, the pay off to this story is the eventual reaction of Big Bert to the truth. And how Zardoz and Friends use Judy’s intel to try and attack CBF.

Anyway, this episode was mostly about all the petty stuff. I don’t know about making Eva a murderer. Well, a criminal at least. It really just feels too-“teleserye” and thus feels very contrived. Maybe it’s just the way they’ve executed the story. Because actually, professional jealousy is an alright story to tell.

Having someone wanting to somehow get one of the Voltes team members off so they can slip in is a fine story. But maybe it’s the mix of the already unappealing triangle/pseudo-cheating angle and all the familiar teleserye conventions that I guess are inescapable.

So this whole hitman plot was partly to offer a poor red herring to Zardoz’s spy. But it’s also a continuation of the really annoying love triangle nonsense.

I guess the only fun result of these shenanigans was the moment with Steve and awkwardMark basically fighting over Jamie. More of that, less of the obsessed scored lover. Lol I supported Eva yesterday. No more of that today! lol

Thankfully, this episode was carried by Mark and Jamie’s scene. It was really great. And that’s the kind of nice character moments we want to see more of. Have them talking things out. Clash, but maybe in a serious way. Not the petty, childish stuff that I assume didn’t even exist in the anime. So why in the live action then?

Overall, a predictable episode. But very much saved by our awkward king Mark and his emotional family background.

I’ve seen people talk about how people worldwide should subscribe to GMA Pinoy TV in order to watch the series. I’d recommend that if you are interested in watching lots of Filipino programming. But if you only want to watch Voltes V: Legacy, I don’t think it’d be a good investment. Especially since you can’t watch the series on demand anyway. GMA Pinoy TV is a linear, premium TV channel on most cable and satellite systems.
