Recap: Power Rangers Dino Fury, Episode 40 (Season 2, Episode 18) – Guilt Trip

Power Rangers Dino Fury Episode 40 Recap

While The Voids begin their plan using Papa Garcia’s drill key, Ollie and Amelia are busy planning a getaway to a haunted house. Mama Akana calls Ollie to follow up on some simulations she asked him to help her with, but he basically brushes her off to get back to trip planning with his girlfriend.

Over in Japan, there is a breaking news report on yokai appearing in the country. Mama Akana knows it is a Sporix Beast, so she immediately calls Ollie. But he declines her call.

Mama Akana decides to call Solon to let her know and Solon calls the Rangers to the base. Solon tells the Rangers that Mama Akana hoped Ollie would be able to head to Osaka to check out the disturbance. But he is just annoyed that his plans with Amelia are going to be ruined. Amelia, though, says it would be okay for them to postpone their trip anytime.

Ollie says Aiyon should go to Japan instead since he loves trying new foods, especially Japanese food. Aiyon excitedly accepts and hurries over to Japan. Ollie is happy he can get back to his date night with Amelia.

Mama Akana is surprised to see Aiyon instead of Ollie. But she’s glad he’s here to see what’s going on. Aiyon expresses his excitement for Japanese food so Mama Akana takes him to get some takoyaki on the way to the scene of the yokai sighting.

But suddenly, the Sporix Beast Sugarhit appears and throws cream pies at them. Aiyon morphs and Mama Akana calls the Ranger Hotline. The other Rangers quickly arrive in Japan.

Back in Pine Ridge, The Voids pop up at the drill site where Papa Garcia is working. He quickly calls the Ranger Hotline as The Voids try to use the key in the drill to dig for an important treasure. But it doesn’t work. Papa Garcia calls the Ranger Hotline to cancel the emergency after they leave.

Back in Osaka, Mucus calls Sugarhit back after Aiyon breaks through the meringue wall. The Rangers notice Mucus was holding a map before they left. They head back to Mama Akana’s lab and she shows them what she’s found so far.

While the Rangers look over the data, Mama Akana asks to speak with Ollie. She asks him if everything is okay, especially since he’s been hard to contact lately. He used to call her every day, but now he’s ignoring her.

Mama Akana says Ollie should at least be honest with her and not make it seem like he’s just avoiding her. Especially when the work she asked him to help her with was all incorrect and poor quality. Ollie says if she doesn’t like his work anymore, they should stop working together. He stomps away.

Amelia goes to talk to Ollie outside. She says he shouldn’t be treating his mother that way, especially when he’s so lucky to even have one when she’s never even had parents. Just then, Mama Akana’s lab partner Shigeru walks by as he recognizes Ollie. He says Mama Akana has always said lots of great things about him.

Shigeru says he had just gone out to get some supplies for the night because they are going to need to pull an all-nighter to fix some mistakes Mama Akana made on the excavation simulation. The data is needed before the crew can start working and then get paid. Shigeru excuses himself to go back inside.

Ollie did not realize that his work affected so many people. He finally realizes he messed up, especially since his mother has now had to cover for him being a jerk.

The other Rangers come out and find that Mucus seems to be targeting the top 10 tourist spots of Osaka. And there is one location left. They hurry over and quickly morph when they see Hengemen taking selfies. The Rangers battle the Sporix Beast inside the Toei theme park.

When Sugarhit embiggens, the Rangers hop into the Mosa Cosmic Megazord to finish it off for good.

Before Mucus can grab the Sporix blob, Ollie swipes it first.

Later, Mama Akana congratulates the Rangers on another job well done and for saving Osaka. They share in the snacks that Shigeru had purchased for the night.

Ollie asks to talk with his mother. He apologizes for being a jerk to her and offers to redo the simulations. He admits that he can reschedule his plans and make things right. Mama Akana and Ollie share a happy reconciliation.

Episode Thoughts

This was a really good lesson episode. Not as forcibly fed as other lesson episodes. Which is a feat in itself. Ollie and Mama Akana’s relationship has been one of the strongest aspects of Dino Fury, I think. So it was a good episode to use their relationship to tell this lesson while also furthering Ollie and Amelia’s relationship too.

It’s a common story and it’s a good story to have here on Power Rangers. Similar to last episode with Izzy having to get her priorities straight, Ollie had to learn that this episode too. But I think it was also in Ollie’s character. Once he gets into something, he might be a bit stubborn and go all in. So him focusing all his efforts on Amelia and forgetting everything else is a good way to illustrate the lesson of the week.

A nice excuse for the Rangers to go to “Japan” too which was a lot of fun.

I also appreciate how Aiyon was quite fun this episode and not the strangely annoying and overly cocky characterization the show prefers to do most of the time. He was more fun and silly in a charming way.

Meanwhile, it was good to have The Voids working on their endgame plan. Having them working in bits and pieces in every episode, especially leading up to the finale is a nice bit of serialization. Which is of course something Saban Brands/Hasbro seemed to hate so much. But seeing it here is great as I would like to see more of that.

Anyway, this was overall another good episode! Hope they continue the momentum to the finale.
