Recap: Power Rangers Dino Fury, Episode 38 (Season 2, Episode 16) – Wishful Thinking
Javi has just posted a cover to Buzzblast of “It’s All Good” by Pete Flash. He asks everyone at the office to like and share the video to get the views up. He’s been hustling all week so the Rangers suggest they take a break in the park.
Meanwhile, Void Queen introduces Hexcurio the Great to the rest of the team. He has rare wishing charms and Mucus gives it a try to wish for a snazzy new hat that will get her into the Pine Ridge Fine Hat Society. But wishes come with a cost. And for Mucus, it means her turning into a human.
Mucus heads to the park to set up a table of charms where the Rangers eventually approach. Amelia loves charms and offers to buy one for all of them. Only Javi and Ollie take her up on her offer. Javi wishes for a million views on his video, Amelia wishes to see her parents again, even for just a moment and Ollie (wanting to prove the charm is fake) wishes for a hug from his mom who is all the way in Japan.
Back at Buzzblast, Jane has made herself Javi’s new manager now that his video is going viral with a million views and counting. She’s even getting calls from all over. Suddenly, Dr. Akana pops in to give her son a hug. She says one moment she was in Japan, the next, she was teleported here. She assumed they needed help with something. But the Rangers quickly realize the charms seem highly suspicious. Amelia is sad that her wish did not come true.
Javi stays behind to do a magazine photoshoot.
The Rangers confront Mucus, but Hexcurio reveals himself and he unveils their curses. Amelia turns 12, Ollie turns into a Hasbro action figure and Izzy (taking Javi’s place) turns into Tyramigo. With the rest of the Rangers cursed, Zayto and Aiyon take on Wreckmate after the King and Queen briefly appear to take Hexcurio back to Area 62 to keep him safe. Otherwise, the curses will be lifted.
Izzy decides to help Zayto and Aiyon who are struggling. Amelia decides to call Solon who comes speeding up on the Dino Fury Cycle to drive Wreckmate away.
Over at Buzzblast, J-Borg has taken horrible photos of Javi for the magazine. But when Javi catches the camera that J-Borg throws in the air, the perfect shot luckily gets taken. Jane says Pete Flash will come to perform with Javi in the afternoon. Javi, seeing all the missed calls, excuses himself to head to the command chamber.
After Javi is filled in, he is sorry their wishes have cursed them in this way. But he asks them to hold off on killing Hexcurio until after his performance with Pete Flash. This is his big break and he can’t let it just disappear in a flash.
A bit later, Dr. Akana gives Javi a pep talk by talking about her own years of hard work to get to where she is today. As long as you believe in yourself and along with your friends who believe in you, everything will be okay.
Over at Area 62, Mucus is disgusted by her human body. Knowing the curse will be lifted when Hexcurio is destroyed, she convinces Slyther to take him along to battle the Rangers. Which is against Mama and Papa Void’s wishes.
Zayto, Aiyon and Javi, along with Izzy, face-off against Slyther and Hexcurio and Hengemen. Zayto hops onto Izzy to help drive Slyther away. Hexcurio embiggens and the boys hop into the Megazords to destroy him for good.
Mucus is excited to be a mushroom again and takes Hexcurio’s blob with her back to Area 62.
All the Rangers are back to normal. As are Javi’s video views. Pete Flash arrives and, after seeing the 190 views, is upset that he’s been scammed. But Javi arrives and explains how he has been hustling to promote himself. Pete Flash acknowledges Javi’s talents and decides to do the performance with him anyway.
The performance gets a lot of views. And that’s without wishing charms too.
Ollie notices Amelia seems down and asks what she wished for earlier. She says it was to see her parents, even if for a little bit. She doesn’t think it was fair that everyone’s wishes were granted except for hers. Ollie says she’ll be able to find answers.
Episode Thoughts
An actually good filler episode! And full disclosure, I’m watching this after already seeing how the season ends. So yes, there is foreshadowing lol hinthintwinkwink lol
Anyway, it was a good, though simple Javi-focus episode. My favorite part was definitely the scene between him and Mama Akana. It was an unexpected pairing, but it worked. It was very nice. Especially since the comparison between Javi wanting to be a top star and Dr. Akana being on top in her field was very logical. Logical? Not something you can say often to describe Power Rangers.
Seeing Solon on the Cycle was awesome as well. More Solon in Action please!
Very random to have them squeeze in the Tyramigo suit just to use the Ryusoulger footage. But if they have the suit, then I guess you gotta use it somehow.
Overall, a simple, straightforward filler episode. But reasonably enjoyable.

honestly this is one of my favorite episodes of dino fury. a few things you didn’t mention but i think deserve some love:
1.Izzy grumbling when she realizes that she won’t fit in the megazord cockpit and has to skip the battle.
2. Torum Heng, mucus’s voice performer, played her in human shape. she has the mannerisms down so well that you could forget she hasn’t been in the suit all along.
3. according to EP Simon Bennett, when they were first developing the show, the plan was for Lani Akana to be the mentor character. they changed it to Solon when they decided “blue ranger’s mom as mentor” was too similar to Ravi and the Commander in beast morphers. but i like that we see traces of mentor!Lani in this episode where she spells out the life lesson to Javi.
4. Ollie comforting Amelia about her parents at the end of the episode. Ollie doesn’t believe in ghosts or future vision, but he does believe in her. it’s adorable!
Wow, that’s a great fact about Torum Heng/Mucus. That’s fun!
I’m glad they chose Solon. Mama Akana can be a helpful mentor even without being “official” mentor.
