Recap: Voltes V: Legacy, Episode 52 – Home Coming

Voltes V Legacy Episode 52 Recap

Dr. Hook congratulates the Voltes team. Steve says they wouldn’t have made it had it not been for him and apologizes for acting like a spoiled asshole earlier. Dr. Hook says he is hard on them because he wants them to succeed. True teamwork involves hardships and sacrifices.

The Voltes team say they understand Dr. Hook now and will not leave CBF anymore. He accompanies Steve, Mark and Big Bert to test out new high caliber bullets that can penetrate Boazan armor.

Meanwhile, Hrothned and his peoples have arrived in our solar system. EDF and CBF detect the spacecrafts, but Commander General Robinson and Dr. Hook decide to observe them for now as they orbit Jupiter.

Hrothned tells his peoples that the Earthlings will welcome them with open arms, most especially his children.

But when the fleet accelerates toward Earth, Steve and Dr. Hook agree to treat these new arrivals as hostile enemies. Especially after everything they’ve experienced so far, though Mark and Jamie are skeptical because of the small number of spaceships in the approaching fleet.

The Voltes team suits up and Dr. Hook calls for a yellow alert.

Meanwhile, Zambojil calls Zuhl and orders him to intercept Hrothgar and the rebels before Zardoz finds out he is still alive. Otherwise, it will be Zuhl who ends up dead as he has failed at his mission so far.

Hrothgar’s fleet enters Earth’s atmosphere, but the Voltes team quickly arrives to attack. He stops General Watson from firing back after recognizing these are the Volt Machines he had invented before he left. Hrothned tells the others to stay back while he attempts to make contact with the Voltes pilots in order let them know they are kakampi.

Steve takes the lead and flies toward Hrothned’s ship, close enough to get an image inside to see who its pilot is. Little Jon and Big Bert want to believe this is really their father, but Mark reminds them not to let their emotions take over and remember they have just gone through this scenario.

Meanwhile down in the ocean, Zardoz, Draco and Zandra are trying to figure out how someone could have taken the Skull Ship. They don’t know that it is Zuhl at the controls. Zuhl is worried of the consequences from Zardoz, but is more worried about Zambojil.

The Armstrong Bros shoot at Hrothned’s ship. But Zuhl arrives and begins shooting at them all as well.

The Voltes team decides to focus on the Skull Ship. Hrothned tells General Watson not to get involved. But when the Voltes team flies away, Zuhl manages to suck in Hrothned’s spaceship into the Skull’s mouth. Steve concludes that this proves the fleet that arrived is an enemy.

Episode Thoughts

Lol Okay. Forget Dr. Hook taking a few episodes to teach the Voltes team a lesson. Everything is already neatly wrapped up. Lol Voltes V: Legacy‘s pacing really is just them splitting an anime episode into 3 or 4 daily episodes.

How to explain it? It feels very much like they are fitting a round episodic/procedural story block into a square serialized hole. That is, instead of a seamless, serialized narrative, you can clearly see where each “full” episode starts and ends. Much like standalone episodic series. Thus, they’re essentially adapting the anime episodes (which I will assume were similarly self-contained), but rolling them out in the mismatched serialized/teleserye format.

It makes sense if they’ll be/already have re-edited longer episodes. But it unfortunately gets messy when needing to have a daily rollout instead.

That’s why having Dr. Hook pop in, have big conflict and now everyone’s all smiles would be okay with longer hour-long, self-contained episodes. But not on a daily series.

Anyway, good for Steve to be skeptical of yet another Papa Armstrong lookalike. Bad on Hrothned for being far too aggressive in arriving on Earth and assuming they will be welcomed with open arms. Lol Did he not know Zambojil had sent an army to Earth? General Watson must have at least told him that. So obviously, the Erthuians would not be welcoming to alien spacecrafts.

Voltes V: Legacy Episode 52 is available on GMA Network’s official YouTube channel:
However, it is restricted to the Philippines only. Hopefully it will be made available worldwide soon!

I’ve seen people talk about how people worldwide should subscribe to GMA Pinoy TV in order to watch the series. I’d recommend that if you are interested in watching lots of Filipino programming. But if you only want to watch Voltes V: Legacy, I don’t think it’d be a good investment. Especially since you can’t watch the series on demand anyway. GMA Pinoy TV is a linear, premium TV channel on most cable and satellite systems.
