Recap: Voltes V: Legacy, Episode 15 – Skull Ship
Dr. Smith has assembled everyone in the command center. He reiterates that the Voltes team are Earth’s last line of defense. So in preparation for future threats, CBF and EDF will undergo a critical test. The Voltes team will attack CBF as if they were alien invaders. In return, the EDF will defend the base like it is a real attack as well. Real ammunition, real risks. But the Voltes team trusts in each other’s abilities and training.
The Voltes team hop into their Machines and the live drill begins. CBF’s defenses are activated. Bert and Little Jon feel weird about attacking something their father helped to create. But Steve and Mark say to get serious. A real attack is what the CBF wants and a real attack the CBF will get.
Dr. Smith and General Robinson are excited to see the Voltes team doing very well maneuvering against the CBF missiles.
Suddenly, CBF is rocked by huge explosions. The command center and the Voltes team realize CBF is being attacked for real. The Boazanians are back! Zardoz has ordered Draco to commence the attack on the island with Vaizanger already walking toward the base.
Commander Robinson orders to deploy the shields and hands over command to Dr. Smith. He returns to EDF headquarters as CBF takes on major damage from the Boazanian attack.
The Voltes team flies over to target the Beastfighter, but none of their attacks even leave a scratch.
Meanwhile, Mama Armstrong is on her way back to base. She calls Commander Robinson to ask what’s happening, but the phone lines are down on the island. Commander Robinson lets Dr. Smith know and Dr. Smith orders his men to search for Dr. Mary Ann immediately.
The Voltes team continues their attack on Vaizanger, but the Beastfighter bombards them with blasts. Mark tries to use his whip to wrap Vaizanger’s legs so it can fall over. But it doesn’t work.
CBF tries to help the team with some missiles. They manage to get the Beastfighter on its knees and that gives the Voltes team time to Volt In.
Voltes V and Vaizanger face off. But as they battle, CBF and EDF lose contact with the team. Dr. Mary Ann tells Master Chief Somera to hurry back to base. But they are suddenly targeted by saucers.
Zardoz has his skull fly over the island. Dr. Smith says it is a symbol of death and Commander Robinson believes the Boazanians are trying to intimidate them.
Episode Thoughts
This was definitely a great episode. And compared to yesterday, an AMAZING episode. Very much a relief to get back to the action. I just have to laugh though at all the nagmamarunong saying this was the episode Mama Armstrong dies.
And no, that’s not a spoiler at this point because aside from certain fans making a huge deal about it on social media as a way to defend Steve being an asshole, GMA spoiled her death in every trailer they’ve released for the show.
Anyway, GMA is going to stretch everything out because again, they’re going to need to fill 80 episodes. And they can’t fill those extra episodes with more romantic triangle stuff. So stretching battles across two or more episodes will be the norm.
And that’s honestly more preferable than the more teleserye-ish story they’ve done so far. Let’s be clear, there’s a difference between adding more depth to the story/characters and just adding irrelevant nonsense. You can guess what the show has done so far. (Hint: a little bit of both!)
But let’s set all that aside for now because this episode was not about that stuff and all about big CGI action sequences.
Again, these action-heavy episodes will probably end up being the best and strongest part of Voltes V: Legacy. More great scenes this episode. The attack on the base was well done. Just a bombardment of blasts and explosions. Very exciting.
And of course, Mama Armstrong being in harm’s way outside of the base added the welcome bit of character connection in the middle of the CGI extravaganza.
Two hilarious moments this episode though. First, “I hope Jamie gets hit.” Lol So loud. Why don’t you have the same energy against your toxic boyfriend Eva!
And then they really had a group of six soldiers shooting at saucers from the ground? Lol Yikes, way to leave your people out to die! lol
Anyway, it’s going to be that balance between big action and those moments that focus on the characters that will make or break the show though. The great action can only carry so much. And it’s carried a heavy load so far. So if the characters fall short by a lot, then the show could get a bit shaky.
Thankfully, exciting and thrilling episodes like this exist. And we can only hope for more of it and a better balance and pace between the show’s two very distinct sides.
Voltes V: Legacy Episode 15 is available on GMA Network’s official YouTube channel:
However, it is restricted to the Philippines only. Hopefully it will be made available worldwide soon!
I’ve seen people talk about how people worldwide should subscribe to GMA Pinoy TV in order to watch the series. I’d recommend that if you are interested in watching lots of Filipino programming. But if you only want to watch Voltes V: Legacy, I don’t think it’d be a good investment. Especially since you can’t watch the series on demand anyway. GMA Pinoy TV is a linear, premium TV channel on most cable and satellite systems.
