Recap: Voltes V: Legacy, Episode 35 – Enemy Within

Jamie wakes up again as Steve and Apable engage in hand-to-hand combat. Jamie tries to help, but instead just gets knocked down by her assassin. Apable gets the upper hand, but Mark arrives and snaps his whip at Apable’s arm to stop him from slitting Steve’s throat.

That allows Steve to get himself out of Apable’s hold and he knocks him out. Steve immediately checks on Jamie as Mark ties Apable up with his whip.

Steve thanks Mark for saving his ass. Mark says no problem, “Basta para kay Jamie.”

Next day, Commander Robinson and the boys visit Jamie in the medical ward. She has no idea what happened to her, so they break the news that Apable almost murdered her and is currently being brought to jail by EDF police.

Commander Robinson tells Jamie that they she owes her life to Mark and Steve. Mark smiles and says this shows Jamie isn’t as astig as she thinks. She still needs to be protected. Jamie smiles back and thanks him and Steve. Steve says he’s sure she’d do the same for them.

The news of what’s happened travels fast through CBF. The other privates Marites about it and Eva listens to her friends who say that anyone who might have worked with Apable will be found out soon enough.

As Apable is being escorted off of CBF, a sniper shoots him in the chest.

Over at the command center, Dr. Smith and Commander Robinson speak to their peoples all across CBF to say that Apable indeed must have had a kasabwat in the camp. That’s why he is now dead. They say to look around them at this moment. One of them could be the deadly traitor.

Dr. Smith urges that person to step forward and come clean and in exchange, he will speak with the supreme commander to spare their life. But Commander Robinson says if they will instead be found out, they will not only feel the wrath of the supreme commander, but also feel the wrath from him as a father.

Steve and Mark accompany Jamie to her room. Steve offers to stay with her, but Mark says she already has four bodyguards. Jamie insists she doesn’t even need those four. But anyway, she’ll be fine. She says good night to Steve only and Mark clears his throat so he also gets a good night as well.

Mark and Steve follow Jamie inside, saying they want to make sure it’s all clear. But Jamie notices her photo on the side table is gone and assumes Apable took it too. Steve says it’s gross to think about what someone might be doing with Jamie’s photo. A defensive Mark says not to be so judgmental.

Sensing they’re about to argue again, Jamie ushers them out her room. They both stop in the hallway and Steve suggests Mark also get some rest. Mark tells Steve to go first since his quarters are just across the hall from Jamie’s. But they both leave at the count of three.

Next morning, the Armstrong Bros are having breakfast and talk about what’s bothering Steve. He says he couldn’t sleep last night worried about Jamie. His little brothers encourage him not have regrets and to admit his feelings to her.

Steve drives to the beach where Mark is already watching Jamie as she reads a book. Steve tells Mark he can take over for now. But Mark says he can’t do that. He admits that he doesn’t want to lose Jamie like he lost his mother. He didn’t mean what he said about not caring about relationships. No matter how much he tries to stay away from her, he’s realized that he really likes Jamie. Mark knows how close Steve is to Jamie, so he asks if he can help him.

Steve asks if Mark is sure about what he’s saying since he’s usually just a jerk to them. Mark says he grew up lonely. Dr. Smith was the only one he ever talked to at CBF. That is, until Jamie. She was so persistent it was annoying. But over time, Mark grew to really appreciate her being the first one to ever reach out to him and understand him.

Since then, he’s become happier. Just being around her, he felt better. So when she almost died, he realized that he just can’t lose her.

“Hindi ko kayang mawala siya sa akin, kasi mahal ko siya.”

Mark wishes he could tell Jamie how he feels, but does not know how. That’s why even though they haven’t always seen eye to eye, Mark hopes Steve can help him since he is so close to Jamie like a best friend and brother.

Steve answers with a tepid “Yeah.”

Over at the Skull, Baron Zander mocks Zardoz for again failing and touts his own stature as someone hand-picked by the Emperor for his position. Zander says he is the obvious choice to succeed Zambojil. But Zardoz says he is still the prince and the rightful heir to the throne.

Zardoz hangs up on Zander and goes to scold his generals once again. He sends them away and resolves to take Baron Zander down.

Later, the generals introduce the next losing… er, next Beastfighter: Bomboz. Zardoz thinks it looks weak and sure to lose. The generals laugh and says it definitely will. Zardoz asks if they are teasing him and Zuhl laughs yes, they are. Zardoz is about to shoot Zuhl in the face, but Zuhl explains that they intentionally designed Bomboz to be defeated in order for it to find out Voltes V’s weakness.

Zardoz is intrigued.

Episode Thoughts

Okay! This episode is all about #MaMie! This is the kind of non-action drama we want to see. Not Eva being a moustache-twirling murderer lolol

I thought they did a good job with the way Mark came out with his feelings. Loved seeing Steve completely downtrodden and dejected lol Snooze you lose bro!

I hope we get a lot of scenes of Mark and Jamie actually trying it out. Obviously, I know what the romantic endgame is. But still, it would be nice to see them actually explore their potential relationship. And of course Steve seething in the corner.

At the same time, it does sometimes feel like Voltes V: Legacy only takes one episode to set-up the next big moment. Which can feel too forced instead of a more free-flowing story. Makes me wonder if they’ll be re-editing the episodes into longer ~45 minute episodes later on. And so the way they’re developing some stories makes more sense. Just doesn’t come across with the daily format I guess.

Anyway, #TeamMark all the way of course. And so far, he’s really gotten the best character foundation. (Which is different from “development,” though he would be the winner there too, relatively speaking.) So seeing him grow from being a lonely, closed-off person to now someone ready to open his heart, it’s one of the series’ better plot threads.

Meanwhile, kinda rich for Steve to assume someone would be using Jamie’s photo for some obscene things. When he was the first one taking secret photos (plural!) of Jamie on his phone. What was HE doing with those photos? Hmmm? Lol

And was it really a good idea for Dr. Smith and Commander Robinson to instigate their officers to suspect each other like that? lol Seems like a recipe for disaster. Everyone suspicious of each other and pointing fingers. Lol

Just meh stuff from the Skull crew. But it was amusing when the generals teased Zardoz.

Overall, #MaMie elevated this episode right to the top. And I’m looking forward to seeing the fleeting #MaMie moments before the show goes full Steve-Jamie (whatever their ship name is lol).

I’ve seen people talk about how people worldwide should subscribe to GMA Pinoy TV in order to watch the series. I’d recommend that if you are interested in watching lots of Filipino programming. But if you only want to watch Voltes V: Legacy, I don’t think it’d be a good investment. Especially since you can’t watch the series on demand anyway. GMA Pinoy TV is a linear, premium TV channel on most cable and satellite systems.
