Let’s check out some P-pop for this first Filipino Friday of 2024! Featuring 1621BC, 6ENSE, DAYDREAM and Eugene Domingo as Becky!
“Laruan” by 1621BC
My first experience with 1621BC was their performance on GMA’s New Year’s Countdown. And it was a really good performance. Their debut song “Laruan” is a refreshing pop dance track. And in Filipino too! It’s so weird to be surprised that a P-pop track has Filipino lyrics lol But here we are. Anyway, I decided to check out the music video for the song and it probably surprised me even more. Having heard the group is under an ABS-CBN label, I honestly expected a bit more. The music video isn’t very exciting and actually is quite a contrast to the group’s solid performance and the song itself. Regardless, I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing what they have in store next.
“Paligoy-Ligoy” by 6ENSE
I think I checked out 6ENSE before, though I haven’t written about them. But their special performance video of their remake of Nadine Lustre’s “Paligoy-Ligoy” popped up on YouTube for me, so I checked it out. It’s a great R&B-ified version of the great pop track and really perfectly arranged for the boy group. It certainly left a great impression on me. And if I didn’t really pay attention to them since their debut in 2022, I’m certainly looking forward to their next original releases now.
“Make Me Better” by DAYDREAM
I honestly haven’t heard anything from DAYDREAM since my Kinda Sort Deep Dive into P-Pop in early 2022. But their “official visualizer” for their latest track “Make Me Better” also popped up on my YouTube recommends. It’s a vibey midtempo R&B track and the ladies deliver both vocals and swagger with their performance.
“Finggah Lickin” by Eugene Domingo
If you haven’t checked out this fun and AWARD WINNING! track from the movie Becky and Badette, then you should be in for a treat. The fun track “Finggah Lickin,” performed by Eugene Domingo as Becky, is a catchy pop dance track that’ll simply put a smile on your face. Press Hit Play make a guest appearance in the movie for Becky’s MV performance of the track. And really, it’s a song that easily could fit in well with the ever diverse P-pop genre of, now, 2024!
