Recap: Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger, Episode 36 – Hymeno’s Matchmaking Strategy

Hymeno, the only Ohger who has regained control of her kingdom, broadcasts to all of Chikyuu announcing she is welcoming all aspiring husbands to come to Ishabana. She wants to marry and give birth to her successor. A bunch of men hurry to the castle’s gates.

Gira, Yanma, Rita and Jeramie come and ask Hymeno what in the world is going on. Just then, a handsome man comes walking into the castle.

He introduces himself as Romane Dearborn, a duke of Ishabana’s 1000 year old Diābōn Family. Hymeno’s four maids faint at the sight of him and he says many people act this way when they first see him. He has long lived with his beauty as a crime. Rita says she has not judged his case yet.

Anyway, Romane explains that Hymeno once saved him from this beautiful sin.

Flash back to when Romane was at a river about to mutilate his own face. But Hymeno stopped him, saying she would never forgive anyone who destroys something so beautiful. Romane says there is no justification for this beauty if it hurts people. Hymeno says that his shining brilliance will not dim, no matter how many gashes he inflicts on himself.

Romane then decides to kill himself, thinking that will finally make him be of use to other people. Hymeno kicks the dagger out of his hand and asks him to devote his life to her.

Romane says that was when he decided he would be the one Hymeno eventually marries. Hymeno says she’s met many men like this. But Romane will stay true to his promise and that he now views it as his duty. He will make sure she returns his feelings.

Hymeno decides that the final five candidates will be Gira, Yanma, Jeramie, Rita and Romane.

Hymeno tells them to come back tomorrow for the start of the competition. Outside, Jeramie says he will forfeit as he has no interest in romance with children (relative to his age).

Having noticed Yanma’s reaction to Hymeno’s proposal earlier, Jeramie teases him that he won’t stand in his way.

Back inside, Dagded pops in and it turns out Hymeno is actually Kamejim. He has trapped Hymeno and her people in the dungeon battling a poison that is slowly killing them. Kamejim plans to use the marriage competition to lure the kings here and then kill them as Hymeno. That will turn cause deadly chaos amongst the Chikyuuians.

Hymeno remembers the day she first returned to the castle after their trip to Kyoryutopia. She arrived at a castle full of people sprawled out on the floor. Sebastian brought her to the dungeon of sick people and explained how Kamejim posed as doctors to convince Ishabanians to take poison disguised as vaccines. People began questioning the vaccine, causing fights to break out between pro-vaccine and anti-vaxxer Ishabanians. That allowed the poison to spread without a cure being developed.

Just then, Hymeno realizes this Sebastian is a fake. Indeed, it is Kamejim and his tricks once again. Hymeno knows Sebastian would have never allowed patients to be cared for in a dungeon.

Kamejim realizes his little slip up, but laughs that without him, she won’t be able to come up with an antidote. He says if Hymeno wants to save her people, they must work together. Hymeno dehenshins and tosses him her Calibur. But Kamejim then poisons her as well and calls her stupid for trusting him.

Back in the present day, Hymeno asks head nurse Elegance to help her before more Ishabanians fall ill.

Next evening, Hymeno welcomes the eligible suitors to the first challenge: ballroom dance. Gira yells that they have no time for this nonsense. But Yanma is ready to take this seriously. He pushes Gira toward Hymenojim and they start dancing. Gira does not know Hymenojim has a syringe of poison in his dress. But when Gira trips over himself, she calls him ugly and calls on the next candidate.

Yanma excitedly steps forward. But he suddenly gets shy, blushing as red as Gira’s clothes. Jeramie shoots some webs at Yanma to control his dancing like a puppet. But Hymeno thinks he looks atrocious.

Next up is Rita who dances gracefully with Hymenojim. But thinking something is wrong, Rita asks Hymeno to nod if she is in trouble. Hymenojim decides Rita will be the first one to kill.

But just then, Romane steps in for a dance, admitting he was a bit jealous of what he was seeing. Romane asks to take over and he leads Hymenojim gracefully across the floor.

Meanwhile in the dungeon, Hymeno and Elegance begin administering an antidote on the sick. When Sanagims come in to try and stop them, maid Cleo quickly knocks them out, freeing Hymeno and the other sick people.

Back upstairs, the next part of the marriage contest is for the candidates to make her kilig with whispers in the ear. Gira goes first and yells at her to stop this nonsense.

Yanma steps up and strips his jacket off to show off his arms. But he cannot find the words to say to Hymeno, even with Jeramie trying to feed him pick-up lines through a web cone. An annoyed Yanma goes after Jeramie for messing up his chance.

Next up is Rita who just repeats “Moffun” to her. But a rose dart comes flying out of nowhere. Hymenojim looks up to see the real Hymeno come in.

Hymenojim tries to paint Hymeno as the impostor, even pointing out that she has the Calibur.

But Romane comes sliding on his knees and knocks the sword out of Hymenojim’s hands to return to the real Hymeno.

Romane says her butler, Sebastian, is back. To everyone’s shock, Romane is actually Sebastian without the makeup and prosthetics!

Rita points out that Romane and Hymeno had promised to marry and asks if that means Hymeno will be marrying Sebastian. Hymeno asks Romane who explains that he had to tell a lie in order to trick Kamejim.

Hymeno commends RomBas on a job well done. RomBas says it is his honor to serve her. They flash back to when Hymeno had her maids turn Romane into her butler Sebastian.

Hymeno had said even with a new identity and appearance, Romane/Sebastian would still be the same person at heart. It is his heart that cares for others that is most beautiful and Hymeno asks if he will let her have it.

RomBas knelt and pledged himself to Hymeno.

Now, Romane does his makeup and he is back to being Sebastian. Hymeno says of course she was able to develop an antidote in her country of beauty and medicine. Kamejim remains defiant until the end. But Hymeno is able to show her selfish, beautiful shine as the sun rises, proving herself to be the true king.

The others follow Hymeno’s lead and henshin to take on Sanagims. Hymeno takes on Kamejim and says true beauty is etched in each and every person and can never be erased.

Jeramie asks Yanma if he is in love with Hymeno, but he says he can’t stand her.

Hymeno is able to drive Kamejim away and regains control of her kingdom.

To celebrate, Hymeno welcomes Geoffrey-san to Ishabana to give out Geoffrey plushies and probably Toys R Us gift certificates to the childrens.

Kaguragi pops up and asks Rita to help him take back Toufu next. Before leaving, Geoffrey-san gives a pair of Geoffrey and Moffun plushies to Rita. Jeramie follows them out.

Meanwhile, Hymeno asks Sebastian if he wants to return to being Romane. He says with his new face, he feels like he could be who he really wants to be for the first time in his life. She thanks him for his sincerity and loyalty to her.

Episode Thoughts

Wowow! What a great episode to return with! I was definitely surprised by Romane’s true identity. Thank goodness I was not spoiled this time! It was a great reveal. And actually quite emotional. They got heavy with it when unfolding Romane’s story and his desire to self-harm(!).

Though I don’t know having a whole new identity forced on you is the answer (lol). But then again, it could be a metaphor for other things as well as they made a point to say Romane was able to be himself and more comfortable with who he is once he became Sebastian.

I honestly thought Romane was going to become a new Ohger or something. Either that or he was Kamejim. And Kamejim had killed or gotten rid of the real Romane or something. But this twist was very good. It would be great to see more of Romane too. The actor Minami did a great job here. But of course Hiroto Yoshimitsu has been a lot of fun as Sebastian as well.

Anyway, Hymeno’s intentions were sincere. And it made for some nice, touching moments between her and Romane/Sebas. Handled differently, it could’ve been quite awkward. Especially with the romantic undertones. But the show did very well in making RomBas’s story be a solid way to explore Hymeno’s philosophy. And a good way to flesh out Hymeno’s personality as well.

Both Yanma and Hymeno’s post-Kyoryutopia focus episodes have done a great job at showing us more about their characters. Something I think the show should’ve done more before the time jump.

Like with Yanma’s episode the other week, it was great to see Hymeno’s team like Nurse Elegance and Cleo, the head maid/housekeeper get in on the action, literally!

Overall, a really strong, awesome episode. Especially as the episode to come back to after the one-week break. Looking forward to Kaguragi and Rita’s episodes coming up. And perhaps Gira’s episode will finally give us some insight into Husuti history too! Yay!
