Leg 23.04 – “Nahuhulog ulo ko!”

TARPHDME23

It is 4am and teams begin the 4th Leg of the Race near Pont de Paris in Andorra La Vella. The first clue tells teams to hop back into their 2023 Kia Sportages and drive 185km to Figueres, Spain!

TARPHDME23
TARPHDME23

Teams must find the Dali Theatre and Museum for their next clue. And that next clue reveals a Road Block… Which is also an Intersection! Who can master the piece?

TARPHDME23

For this Road Block, teams will pair up in order correctly arrange ten glass panels in a large frame to recreate Salvador Dali’s iconic “The Persistence of Memory”. When the painting is complete, teams will receive the next clue.

TARPHDME23

This is also the Trigger Point for this Leg of the Race. If any pair gets the thumbs up on their finished puzzle within the first three attempts, the U-Turn or Yield will be activated on the next Leg. If the Trigger Point is activated, both Intersected teams will be immune.

Teams must now drive to Placa de la Independencia in Girona. Teams will no longer be Intersected as soon as they enter their 2023 Kia Sportages and drive away.

TARPHDME23

After parking their 2023 Kia Sportages in the marked spaces, teams must make their way on foot to Passeig de la Muralla. The clue waiting there tells teams to walk the medieval walls in order to look out over the city to find their next Route Marker. They must realize it is a large flag flying next to the Cathedral of Girona.

TARPHDME23

Here, teams must count the steps in front of the cathedral and exchange the correct answer for the next clue.

TARPHDME23

That clue directs teams to make their way on foot to Pont de les Peixateries Velles. And the clue waiting there for them reveals a Double Road Block: Front or Back.

TARPHDME23
TARPHDME23

Teams must head to Rocambolsec Gelateria. The team member in the Front will take three orders from customers in Spanish for gelato. The team member in the Back will then have to prepare the orders to receive the next clue.

TARPHDME23

Teams will return on foot to Placa de la Independencia and hop back into their 2023 Kia Sportages to drive to Arco de Triunfo de Barcelona.

TARPHDME23

Teams must search the area for a familiar friend: Jollibee! A Jollibee Big Head who has traveled from Jollibee Madrid is here to deliver their next clue which reveals the Detour: Gegants or Flamenco.

TARPHDME23

In Gegants, one team member must put on a Big Head costume. Their partner must then lead them by following a map to find the partner costume. When they find it, that team member must put it on and then together make their way to National Theatre of Catalonia for the next clue.

TARPHDME23

In Flamenco, teams must head to the National Theatre of Catalonia where they will learn and perform a flamenco pairs routine. When they perform correctly, they will get the next clue.

TARPHDME23

And that clue points teams to the Pit Stop at Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau in Barcelona, to which they must make their way on foot!

The first team to check-in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

The last team to check-in here WILL be eliminated.

“Director’s” Commentary

A lot of driving this Leg again. But there was a lot to do in the area. So I just included it all. With even more possible things to do with actual scouting and not just Google scouting too! Especially for a full Leg in Barcelona.

First up, the 3-4 hour drive from Andorra la Vella to Figueres should hopefully be a challenge for teams. Have teams get lost along the way in scenic areas will be great for our 8K UHD drone shots. Hehe.

Next, a recycled task from TAR34. It was actually a pretty good Road Block. And Figueres ended up being a great stop along the way from Andorra to Barcelona. Perfect too being related to Salvador Dali. So it just made sense to have this Road Block here.

Now, the Road Block needed to be an Intersection since we still have 12 teams. Lol We have lots of great sponsors, but we gotta save some money somewhere. So better to have just six stations. And it’s okay here as the first task of the Leg. It’s the 4th Leg too and with 12 teams. So it would be interesting having an Intersection with 12 teams.

I thought about keeping teams Intersected through to Girona. But then it might be too much even with three more tasks before the Pit Stop. We don’t want the Leg to be decided by an Intersection.

Girona is another good stop before finishing in Barcelona. And finding out about Rocambolesc was perfect for the task here. Lots of walking too to help fill out the Leg and potentially frustrate and tire out the teams too.

Finally, I think the Detour is well-balanced. Jollibee’s visit will play a part later on the Race. Hehe.

But the Gegants task is basically a recycle of other TARPHDME tasks of the past. And the flamenco is a typical dancing/perform task.

For the Pit Stop this Leg, I definitely thought of La Sagrada Familia since, of course, we should visit it and feature it on the Race’s visit to Barcelona. But Google scouting brought me to a perfect and less-touristy location in the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau. So we’ll save the iconic landmark for next Leg. *spoileralert!*

Unless teams manage to walk past it on the way to the Pit Stop. I originally had them drive to the Pit Stop, but walking will offer another extra challenge to exhaust teams. And maybe add some drama and tension.

Though we could have one final task at La Sagrada Familia too in this Leg if one were possible.

Overall, I think this is a great Leg that offers up unique challenges to teams not seen yet this season. And probably not for the rest of the Race too.
