Recap: Power Rangers Dino Fury, Episode 23 (Season 2, Episode 1) – Numero Uno
The Rangers, sans Amelia, quickly collect a fly-themed Sporix blob. They’ve been timing themselves during battle and are excited about continuing to break their own record. Amelia’s been busy in charge of Buzzblast while Jane is away and arrives at the scene just as the others leave for their other errands.
Jane and J-Borg call Amelia to check in from their international travels filming a documentary. Jane asks Amelia if she can stay in charge for a few more months.
Over at the command chamber, Ollie is finishing up a video call with his mom who is currently researching at the Ishinomori Institute in Japan. Solon does what she can to help Zayto and Aiyon locate their home planet, but to no avail. Ollie suggests they try the internet or the library. They have no idea what a library is so Ollie gives them the address.
Meanwhile over at Area 62, Slyther and Mucus are trying to get into Void Knight’s secret room. But Void Knight, now trapped in a computer, pops up and orders them to retrieve something from the Rangers with the help of Bitscreem.
The Garcia Sibs are with Aiyon leaving the library with astronomy books when Bitscreem pops out of Izzy’s phone when her girlfriend calls.
Izzy, Javi and Aiyon morph and battle Bitscreem who hurls Aiyon and his books into a flower cart before flying away. The flower cart owner comes crying that they’ve ruined his livelihood, so Javi fixes it with a Fix It Key. But Bitscreem sneaks up behind them to grab the Fix It Key for himself.
At the command chamber, the Rangers wonder what the Sporix would want with their Key which he can’t even use without a Chromafury Saber since they have Void Knight’s in their possession.
They wonder if Void Knight has survived so they decide to investigate. Amelia has to get back to Buzzblast to take care of all the problems that have arisen. In the meantime, the others look through CCTV footage of the area from the theft earlier. They see that the flower cart owner is actually Slyther and he, Mucus and Bitscreem bow to their apparent leader, Void Knight, on a tablet.
Zayto says this situation is more important than Buzzblast. Izzy goes to call Amelia back, but she sees Bitscreem’s glitch on their laptop and realizes he is spying on them. She puts on a show about destroying Void Knight’s saber in order to lay a trap.
Outside, they set-up a bomb with the saber in the middle of it and wait for Team Void Knight to show up. Amelia takes over the acting duties from Ollie, but when she takes a call from Buzzblast, it is the perfect opportunity for Bitscreem to pop out and grab the saber.
Slyther and Mucus appear and the Rangers morph. Zayto orders Solon to send in the zords. Zayto hops into T-Rex Cosmic Megazord so he can hop into the laptop to find Bitscreem. Zayto delivers a finisher at Bitscreem to destroy him for good.
Back at Area 62, Void Knight uses the saber and Key to fix his suit. He pops back to the clearing to retrieve the Bitscreem blob and thanks the Rangers for getting his saber back to him to restore his armor.
At Buzzblast, Amelia feels bad about being so distracted so she decides to give up juggling two jobs and chooses being a Ranger, of course. Thankfully, Jane and J-Borg are back in town after their hot air balloon almost fell into a volcano where they could’ve been melted and burned to death.
Episode Thoughts
Well that wasn’t much of a “season” premiere. I don’t know, but it felt really stiff. Like, I’m not even sure how to explain it. But the whole episode felt like they were reciting the words off the page instead of actually bringing those words to life.
They had that joke about Ollie’s poor acting while trying to lure out Void Knight and Co. But that scene, including Amelia taking over, was probably the most energetic and natural moment of the episode. In addition to the first few seconds of Zayto running across the roof.
It was a paint by the numbers plot, but the execution felt really off. And I don’t understand why since the first half of Dino Fury was alright. And it’s not like they had a break between filming Episode 22 and this one. So, it felt very odd.
Anyway, from a story standpoint, it was a quick fix to basically undo the events of the midseason finale so we’d still have a plot for this second half of Dino Fury. The need for something like a major villain defeat for the midseason finale is just part of the hurdles of this two year format. Which, after Dino Fury, who knows what will become of it with Netflix. We’ll have to wait and see I guess.
Amelia having to juggle the two jobs was just a plot device to get Void Knight his stuff back. Though I honestly thought it was an opportunity to see less of Jane and J-Borg’s Bulk and Skull antics this year. I guess not lol
What I do guess is that being a “season premiere,” there’s a bit of an expectation for something big or explosive. And I just didn’t feel that this episode. Perhaps binging all the episodes in one go can help in making things more exciting. But I am definitely not going to do that. So, that’s on me.
