Recap: Power Rangers Dino Fury, Episode 22 – Secret Santa
It’s the Christmas season in Pine Ridge and Javi is busking downtown by performing Christmas songs on his keyboard. A mysterious man drops a mysterious tree topper star in his case and walks away.
Izzy comes running up and after noticing Javi has not yet found a replacement key for his keyboard reminds him that they are exchanging gifts for their Secret Santa with the others in an hour. Javi says he’ll get to shopping right now.
Mucus and Slyther are listening in to their conversation and are excited everything is going according to plan. They are resolved to avenge the death of Void Knight.
Javi packs up and wishes Santa a Merry Christmas. But he also asks for advice on buying presents. Santa says the best gift he ever received was Mrs. Claus making him his own gloves. Javi thinks that’s a great gift.
Santa offers to use his magic sketchbook to materialize the gloves for Javi. But Javi says he’s made enough money to buy the gloves on his own. He thanks Santa and hurries to the store.
Mucus and Slyther, meanwhile, set their sights on Santa’s magic sketchbook.
Later, Javi arrives at the command chamber as the others have finished decorating the Christmas tree. Javi takes out the tree topper he was left earlier and they place it on top.
Amelia is the last to arrive and she has brought with her a sack of fan letters for them sent via Buzzblast.
Anyway, Javi shows them the gloves he’s bought for Solon. But Ollie points out that those are human gloves and Solon has claws. Javi is annoyed that he’s messed up his Christmas gifts once again and says Santa is the only expert.
Aiyon asks who Santa is and Ollie tells him. Aiyon had no idea and when he bought his Secret Santa gift, he ended up buying a power sander.
Javi says Solon deserves a wonderful present. So the others offer to go find one for her while Javi stays behind and stalls.
Solon comes in and Javi suggests they sing some Christmas songs. Solon says she wishes she could play instruments like him and is shy about singing Christmas songs since she gets too nervous to remember the words. She feels sad when she can’t follow along.
They decide to read some greetings. But the very first card Javi opens is from Mucus who drops the bomb that they’ve gifted them a bomb at the base. And they sent this card to disable their communication and teleportation systems.
The card reveals a ten-minute timer before the base explodes. After getting over the initial shock that Mucus is still alive, they try to find the bomb. Javi suggests one of the Secret Santa gifts might be it.
They start with Izzy’s gift which is an electronics kit. Javi flashes back to when Ollie helped Izzy with her electronics class. So Ollie must be her Secret Santa.
Ollie’s gift is next and it is a ghost rain poncho. Solon remembers Amelia telling her about how she first met Ollie in the woods. Amelia must be Ollie’s Secret Santa.
Downtown, Santa Claus calls the other Rangers to ask for help. His magic sketchbook has gone missing and he is worried it might fall into the wrong hands.
Just then, the Rangers run into Mucus and Slyther who spill that the Rangers were supposed to be trapped at the command chamber so they can explode to death.
Mucus and Slyther use the sketchbook to manifest a large spider monster. The Rangers morph and they hop into the Fusion Ultrazord.
Back at the base, Javi and Solon move on to the next present which is homemade flargon ice cream for Aiyon from Zayto.
Zayto’s present is a hand-stitched punching bag and gym shirt from Izzy.
The last present is for Javi and it’s a replacement key which Solon custom made for his keyboard. Javi thanks her for the amazing gift. But with no gifts left, they still haven’t found the bomb.
Javi then remembers the tree topper and realizes the man who gave it to him must’ve been Slyther in disguise.
Solon trusts their Sporix chest will be able to contain the explosion so they quickly put the star inside it. It explodes inside and the base is safe.
Javi tries the comms and he is able to reach the others as they finish off the spider monster. Javi joins the others as they confront Slyther. Slyther summons Hengemen and the Rangers quickly take care of them.
Slyther takes the sketchbook and draws an embiggened version of himself. The Rangers hop into their Megazords easily take care of bigSlyther.
Back at the command chamber, the Rangers apologize to Santa for not saving his sketchbook. But Santa says it’s alright since he prefers the traditional way of making presents: by employing elves.
The Rangers exchange their presents with each other. Javi tells Santa that he realized the best gifts are always from the heart. So he decides to give Solon his Christmas songbook so she can learn the songs and be more comfortable singing them.
They all decide to sing “Jingle Bells” together.
So, full disclosure. I wasn’t even going to write about this episode. I actually wasn’t even sure I’d actually watch it, to be honest. Knowing how modern Power Rangers Christmas and Halloween episodes go. But since I needed something to post today to keep my streak alive (lol), I went ahead and watched and recapped this thing.
And surprisingly, it was not that bad. In fact, it might even be the best Christmas episode of the post-Disney Era. (Yes, I’m lumping Saban Brands and Hasbro into the same Era to match my apathy toward the franchise during this same time. Lol)
Obviously, it was going to be some sort of clip show. But I think the majority of the episode (at least half) was actually original story. Like, an actual plot and narrative.
Sure, there were some VERY hammy scenes throughout the episode. A little more than usual for Power Rangers. But the overall plot was actually quite sound. And maybe even above average for Power Rangers.
Mucus and Slyther had a solid plan and the Rangers needed to foil it. Basic set-up, but with pretty good execution and with a nice Christmas touch.
I’ve said all season how much I love Solon and think she’s such a great character. So seeing Javi appreciate her and wanting to give her a worthy present was very nice. She more than deserves it. At first, I thought he’d teach her how to play instruments or give her singing lessons or something. But giving her his family songbook was a nice, personal touch.
You gotta take these simple, but meaningful moments on Power Rangers whenever you can get them! Lol
The way they weaved the clips in was also fresh and creative. None of this “we need to retrace our steps!’ stuff that forces Rangers to go on Netflix to watch old episodes.
Anyway, this was actually a pretty nice episode. An actual plot that is executed well and still being a feel-good Christmas outing.
And apparently with this episode, it is goodbye basic cable forever for Power Rangers! See you later I guess. lol
