Recap: Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger, Episode 29 – Canalo’s Marriage

Canalo is looking through garbage with a young woman, Yui, for items that can still be of good use. They are both very eco-conscious and are hitting it off very well. Later, Canalo reports to Mosa Rex that Yui is a perfect bride candidate. But Yui will only marry him if he avoids all things that are dangerous.

This puts Canalo in a difficult predicament as a Ryusoulger.

Mosa Rex alerts Canalo to an enemy nearby. But it’s actually just Nada listening in to their conversation.

Nada says Canalo need not be conflicted. He suggests Canalo just quit being a Ryusoulger.

Meanwhile in the forest, Koh is helping Bamba get the hang of MeraMeraSoul. But they are interrupted by Kureon and the new Minosaur rampaging. Koh and Bamba henshin and take on some Drunns. This allows the Minosaur to eat all the garbage nearby.

Koh attacks the Minosaur, but it lets out a poison gas. Bamba tries using MeraMeraSoul to burn the gas away, but it doesn’t work. Canalo arrives and Koh tells him to defeat the Minosaur.

But Canalo hesitates as he remembers Yui’s marriage condition. That allows Kureon and the Minosaur to get away.

Canalo clears the gas away and turns to walk away. Koh tries to chase after him, but Nada says not to. Nada explains that Canalo will be quitting the Ryusoulgers.

Later, Canalo meets with Yui. Yui apologizes for having proposed such a condition for marriage. But Canalo says there’s no need.

Yui explains that her father is a police officer. Often times he would come home injured, which worried her mother. That’s why she doesn’t want that for her own marriage. She doesn’t want her husband to ever get hurt or for her to worry.

Back home, Koh and Bamba break the news to Melto, Asuna and Towa about Canalo quitting.

Towa brings up how the ocean Ryusoul Tribe is dying out and facing extinction. Asuna says it makes sense Canalo wants to marry and have babies to keep their tribe alive. Koh decides they should support Canalo and they all agree.

They turn their attention to figuring out the Minosaur.

On the other side of town, Canalo meets a little boy, Ayumu, looking for his toy dinosaur in the trash after his mother threw it out. Canalo tells him to get over it and walks away. But the little boy cries because the dinosaur, Gao-kun, is his friend, not garbage.

Canalo turns back and promises the boy he will find his friend for him. He stumbles upon Kureon and the Minosaur gobbling up more trash.

Canalo uses MieSoul to look inside the Minosaur and he finds Gao-kun who turns out to be the birther. Canalo moves in, but he stops when he again remembers Yui’s condition.

Just then, Koh, Melto and Asuna arrive. They storm inside and are met by Drunns before they henshin and take on the Minosaur.

In the forest, Towa and Bamba run into Gaisorg who wants to battle them. Bamba notices Gaisorg’s new swordsmanship as he and Towa henshin.

Koh, Melto and Asuna realize the Minosaur emits the poison gas when attacked and that it is made of garbage. But the Minosaur eats more and embiggens. Koh, Melto and Asuna hop into KishiryuOh Triken.

They try to stop the Minosaur from moving, but it still can emit the poison gas and they get thrown on their back.

On the other side of town, Canalo meets Yui. He says he wants to marry her. She asks if that means he will agree to her condition.

Gachireus attacks the Minosaur so it can release its poison gas and kill all of humanity.

But Canalo suddenly appears and henshins. He bombards Gachireus with attacks. The Minosaur is distraught at the sight. But Canalo informs Gao-kun that Ayumu regards him as his friend and cried when he was gone. Canalo says Gao-kun is needed and that he is not garbage.

Canalo explains that the Minosaur was born from the sadness of things thrown away that weren’t garbage. Melto tells Koh to punch all the non-garbage out of the Minosaur and they enlist Pachygaroo’s help to form KishiryuOh Pachygaroo. Koh uses Doshin Soul to punch all the glowing non-garbage and defeat the Minosaur for good.

Down on the ground, Gachireus fires at the poison gas ball, releasing it all to eradicate humanity. Canalo uses KurayamiSoul to bring about a black hole to suck up all the gas. He then delivers a huge Black Hole Shot at Gachireus, which doesn’t kill him, but just forces him to retreat.

Meanwhile, Towa and Bamba are struggling against Gaisorg. Bamba uses MeraMeraSoul, but he is only able to knock Gaisorg’s helmet off. And inside Gaisorg is…

Nada!

Nada commends Bamba on his improvement, but says he must grow even more. Nada uses ByuByuSoul to force Bamba and Towa to dehenshin and allow himself to escape.

Back in town, Canalo gives Ayumu his Gao-kun back. Ayumu thanks him.

Canalo explains to Koh, Melto and Asuna that he told Yui he would create a peaceful world where she would never have to cry or worry ever again. That means he can’t marry her.

Yui says goodbye to Canalo. And Canalo has to start looking for a wife all over again.

Oto appears and relays a message from Mosa Rex. She then presents something to Melto from Mosa Rex.

Episode Thoughts

So this was a very odd episode for me. Mainly because Canalo’s obsession with finding a bride has been played for laughs and comic relief rather than as something serious or important. Canalo is actually a solid character without the marriage-crazy side of him.

But this episode was centered around Canalo having a dilemma between getting married or remaining a Ryusoulger. Like, based on how the whole marriage aspect of Canalo’s character has played out, there is zero equivalency here. So any supposed tension when it came to Canalo’s big decision absolutely fell flat and uninteresting.

And that is in spite of the others having that conversation about the Ocean Ryusoul Tribe dying out soon and the need for Canalo and Oto to have babies, basically. I feel like the show threw that in here just to give some kind of depth to the episode’s plot and Canalo being obsessed with marriage. But again, it just didn’t land.

The whole thing just felt unnecessary and contrived. Perhaps the most forced plot of an episode this whole season.

The only reasonable aspect of the story was Yui not wanting her potential husband working in a dangerous profession like her father.

This episode should’ve focused more on Canalo helping the little boy get his dinosaur toy back. The Big Brother Blue/Blue oniichan plot is definitely a toku staple (as we saw in this week’s Power Rangers too). So they could’ve focused on that instead here and even threw in some Oto being jealous or something. That would’ve been better than this whole marriage nonsense.

The show also could’ve used the time to flesh out Nada’s character more too and maybe expand on his sinister ulterior motives. Based on what we know of Gaisorg so far, we might assume the armor has just possessed Nada and has exploited Nada’s existing resentment toward the Ryusoulgers. We know he wishes he was a Ryusoulger, so it would be easy for Gaisorg to manipulate him for his own gain. Whatever Gaisorg’s goal is.

I will say I was legit shocked when Nada popped up in Gaisorg’s armor. But after seeing the next episode preview at the end, I hope Nada’s story isn’t all neatly wrapped up in Episode 30. I think they should do much more with Nada and a possible back and forth with the Ryusoulgers, especially Koh.

And the unmorphed fight scene Koh, Melto and Asuna had with the Drunns was great fun to watch though.

But overall, since this episode was focused on Canalo’s “wedding,” it really just felt awkward, forced and completely off. Definitely not a fan of it.
