Sam and Dean are driving along when they get a call from Garth who sends them off on a case (as he’s been doing using GPS to track nearby hunters to potential jobs).
They head over to the apartment of a man, Ed, whose limbs were ripped from his body in the middle of the night. The (awesome) Sheriff gives them the rundown on what he has and lets them talk to the suspect, Lance, first. He’d been talking with Ed and had sent him some threatening texts.
The Bros talk to Lance who details that the threatening texts were actually sent between the characters they play in a LARPing game, Moondoor. When the Bros go check out a website for the game, Lance begins coughing up blood and eventually dies.
Sam and Dean watch a video about Moondoor and recognize the Queen of this fictional realm, old friend Charlie. They head to the site of the big Battle of the Kingdoms gathering for all the Moondoor LARPers, but their fake FBI badges don’t get past the pros.
They are pointed to the Queen who is shocked to see the two familiar faces. They head inside her royal tent where she packs up, not wanting anything to do with monsters but they tell her about her two soldiers who’ve died. They show her a picture of a symbol that appeared on both victims’ arms and she says it’s an old Celtic magic symbol.
She explains how the Battle of the Kingdoms works and they think maybe someone from one of the warring factions maybe using real magic to win the game.
Dean says Charlie should head somewhere safe, but she agrees with Sam that she needs to be here. As a queen, but also because she’s tired of running. Since Dick Roman’s gone, she’s been able to start a whole new life and she’s going to fight for it now.
Sam gets a call from the medical examiner who says Lance showed signs he was killed by belladonna.
Dean and Charlie are shocked it was a pornstar, but Sam says no, it’s a poison. But no traces of it in his body.
Charlie points Sam to the tech tent where he meets Maria aka Galandria, the wiccan, who helps him find out about other Moondoor LARPers who’ve been injured. The victims weren’t only of Charlie’s people, but from other factions except one. They also find out the symbol is The Tree of Pain. Anyone tagged with it will be harmed by fairy magic. Sam thanks Maria for the help and she invites him to her tent later. Sam is flattered, but maybe next time.
After Dean gives Charlie the “wiki” of what’s happened since they last met and after dressing Dean in appropriate Moondoor attire, they also are led to the only group that knows what the symbol is, the Shadow Orcs. They head to their realm in the forest to find the Shadow King. Dean tells Charlie to head back and find Sam while he goes with one of Charlie’s men, Baltor, to the King.
But on the way back to the main camp, Charlie gets taken by a non-LARPing stag-skull-headed Shadow thing.
Dean and Sam reunite back at camp and realize Charlie’s gone.
She wakes up in a fancy room to find the skull staring at her as she makes her case. She tries to run for it, but real magic keeps her in the room. I only want my life back, she says and the Shadow thing removes the skull and hood and it’s a woman. She says she wants the same thing.
The woman explains that she is Gilda, a fairy who was summoned here by a man who’s ordered her to do some bad things.
Baltor accompanies Sam and Dean to find out the Shadow Orcs have nothing to do with the deaths and injuries. Instead, they find the tent where Charlie and Gilda are and walk into interrupt them making out.
Gilda points to Baltor as the one who summoned her. He explains his crappy real life and how he wanted to rule here.
He then orders Gilda to make his sword real and engages in a swordfight with Dean and Charlie while having a suit of armor hold Sam back. Gilda tells Charlie she must destroy the book of magic used to summon her. Charlie stabs it, Gilda is free and says she’ll take Baltor back to her realm where he’ll face a fairy tribunal.
She kisses Charlie before poofing away with the guy.
Charlie tells Sam and Dean that she’s done with running and is ready to face the real world again. And if they ever need her help, to just call.
Winchester Bros Emo Moment of the Week
Dean tells Sam that he understands he’ll need some time to deal with what he had to give up. No amount of fun will help him. Sam says fun won’t help him, it’ll help both of them.
So they decide to join Charlie’s army in the Battle of the Kingdoms. All dressed up, Dean gives a rousing Braveheart speech before he and Sam lead the charge against the Shadow Orcs.
Okay. Hilarious episode. This is the kind of fun Supernatural does well. Felicia Day is awesome and it is great to see Charlie back. Also, that sheriff was awesome too. Very funny.
Dean being a closet LARPer and seeing Jared with a ponytail I think was all pretty worth it, yes?
This seemed like a breather episode we’d get after a heavy outing, but last week’s episode wasn’t all that heavy really. Still, it was a hilarious and very enjoyable hour and maybe one of the better episodes of the season so far.
