In 2002, NBC premiered a new series that was ahead of its time. A case can easily be made that American Dreams was a precursor for the critically acclaimed Friday Night Lights (also on the peacock). American Dreams was also one of the first series in the last decade to seamlessly integrate music into the show and the storyline. Continue reading →
The 2000s have come and gone. A new decade is about to begin and lists of the best movies, music, television, paint colors, boy band, furniture, light fixtures, etc. are pouring in. As we close out 2009 and the 2000s, I thought about my own list. But my list of television shows aren’t necessarily “the best,” but the shows that defined my decade. The shows that meant something to me the last ten years, shows that left their mark in my mind and in some cases my heart as well.
AMERICAN DREAMS: THE FOURTH SEASON (if there was one) TVGuide’s Michael Ausielo talked with American Dreams executive producer Jonathan Prince and learned what would have happened on what would have been the show’s 4th season:
J.J. and Beth: “I was going to send J.J. to Berkeley to get his sister back and, while there, get exposed to a lot of the antiwar stuff,” says series creator Jonathan Prince. “He would eventually come home and work harder on the space program. And Beth was going to go back to school to get her degree.”
Meg and Sam: “Everybody wanted them to be together, which is why I think they couldn’t,” says Prince. “I was going to give Sam a really serious girlfriend.” Meg, meanwhile, would have fallen for Joey Lawrence’s Bandstand successor, “a guy who seemed superficial on the top and ended up being deeper than that. That’s who she would have ended up with. A local guy. The least likely guy you’d figure.”
Helen and Jack: Helen was going to get busted for helping potential draftees slip off to Canada, leading to a rift between her and Jack. “They would have separated,” says Prince. “But, obviously, they would have gotten back together.
How did I know that mentioning USC would get me on TVGuide.com?? Plus including the fact that Ausielo promised last week that he would bring in exclusive AMERICAN DREAMS finale scoopage… From: https://tvguide.com/news/askausiello
The Primetime Emmy Award nominations will be announced next month, and networks were busy promoting their shows for Emmy consideration. Here are the actors I think should be considered from the shows I actually watch. Tomorrow, I’ll post who I *want* to be nominated for Emmys, not who I *think* will be nominated. (Since most of the ones I want nominated will most likely NOT be nominated)

“AMERICAN DREAMS” ENDING STILL UP IN THE AIR By LJDB; June 9, 2005

In February, Executive Producer Jonathan Prince said in an interview with TVGuide that they had filmed a 10 minute “epilogue/alternate ending” to “American Dreams” in the event that NBC decided to cancel the series. However, as of now, the re-airing for the open-ended finale with the new ending has yet to be scheduled.
While “American Dreams” has been a so-called bubble show since the start of its 2nd season, NBC Universal Television President (then, NBC Entertainment President) Jeff Zucker continued to be the show’s biggest supporter. The show was renewed for a shortened 3rd season that saw the series make a move to Wednesdays for its final four episodes from its usual Sunday timeslot.
Despite a big premiere for the series in 2002, the family drama saw a decline in viewership in its 2nd season and suffered a steep drop in its 3rd season opposite ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and CBS’s “Cold Case.” Its move to Wednesdays opposite ABC’s “Lost” juggernaut didn’t show any signs of improvement in the ratings department.
“It just becomes, unfortunately, the contradiction of America, I guess,” NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly says. “People say they want quality, family-friendly shows at 8:00 and yet you put them on and what they really want to watch is ‘Desperate Housewives.’ Ultimately, we are in a business here. We love the show… It just was not pulling the ratings to really justify the cost of the show or to justify another year on the schedule.”
Gail O’Grady, who played Pryor matriarch Helen, commented on the 10 minute alternate ending. “Let’s hope it happens. If Jonathan Prince is the show-runner that I’ve known him to be, he will not let go of this until there is closure”
It is possible for NBC to re-air the episode sometime this Summer or in the Fall, while many are calling for a “wrap-up” movie to be produced to adequately draw closure to the lives of the Pryor Family.
Among its many awards, “American Dreams” won several Emmy Awards in 2003, while TVLand named it a “Future Classic” at its annual awards show in 2003
AMERICAN DREAMS NBC OMG… If that was the series finale (and I pray to God that it wasn’t)… then American Dreams ended in the worst possible way… Even as a season finale (and it wasn’t even that, since this episode was supposed to lead into a two-part season finale, but NBC cut the episode order to 17)…
Was that supposed to be romantic? Umm… no… Meg is so stupid… what a dumb bitch, seriously… I can’t believe she chose some piece of crap over her own family and friends… how can she justify what she did? He lied to her, he’s a drunk crackhead smoker, he is a murderer, a draft dodger… overall just a jackass…
The only other real story in tonight’s episode… JJ and NASA and Beth… that was heartbreaking, but understandable… now THAT was understable unlike Miss “I want to run away with my lover”… Ugh…
I think the NEED to resolve these stories is reason enough for NBC to renew the show… (in addition to the fact that AD is one of the few actual quality, critically acclaimed shows on NBC, NBC is a complete mess and AD’s timeslot is one less to deal with if it is renewed)
THE OFFICE NBC This show is freakin’ hilarious… they began the original American scripts last night and it was so funny… I love this show… one of my new favorites…
LOST ABC Wow… what a great episode… very eerie again… Terry O’Quinn (Locke) is an amazing actor… definitely deserving of an Emmy nomination… His backstory (part 2) was so sad… How about Bloody Boone… I think Ian Somerhalder has been seriously underused, same with Maggie Grace (Shannon)… There are episodes when they aren’t even in one scene…
Anyway, that airplane has to mean something, I mean the Virgin Mary statues (minus the crack) and then Locke’s mother saying he was “immaculately conceived”… I wonder who’s going to die at the end of the season…
ALIAS ABC FINALLY… an episode of season 4 that I liked… maybe because I actually watched the whole episode, or maybe becuase Marshall was the main focus… he is hilarious and how cool was it to have him back in the field… I remember the last time he and Sydney were in the field and he had taken a drug himself and he was all woosey and out of it and Syd snapped him out of it once she kissed him and he then was working at super speed after that… lol… Syd’s kisses are adrenaline boosters… lol… but this is a great episode, still I’m still missing the old ALIAS
However, this dialogue between Jack & Marshall was so random, but hilarious: Jack: “You’re going to need a digging instrument to assist with this.” Marshall: (searching through the dead guy’s desk) “Uh, I got a spork!” Jack: “What’s a spork?” Marshall: “It’s like a half-spoon, half-fork. Will that do?” Jack: “That will work.”
AMERICAN IDOL FOX Ewe… I thought we were rid of Anwar… I liked Jessica, she was very good… but whatever… Idol’s sucked since season 2…
AMERICAN DREAMS NBC Wow… what a great episode… however I was confused… I’ve watched every single episode of the show since its premiere and I don’t seem to remember that Jack and Pete had an older brother… anyway… that moral dilemma of whether or not to keep him on life support paralleled what’s going on in Florida with that woman… AD is so amazing… Patty was funny, as usual… GO JJ!! How awesome was his idea and getting recognized for it… the only thing that sucked was Chris coming back, cigarette and all, and Meg probably going to follow him… UGH!!!! SEASON FINALE NEXT WEEK!
AMERICAN IDOL I guess someone screwed up the phone numbers, which wouldn’t matter to me since I’m not voting for anyone this year… Last night’s performances (and I guess tonight’s performances too) started out amazing then fell big time in the middle and ended on top at the end… here’s how I ranked last night’s performances: 1. Carrie Underwood 2. Jessica Sierra 3. Vonzell Solomon 4. Nadia Turner 5. Anthony Federov/Nikko Smith 7. Scott Savol/Bo Bice 9. Constantine Maroulis/Anwar Robinson 11. Mikalah Gordon… buh bye!
BORA, SONS OF THE BEACH Well, ABS-CBN gave the Philippines what they like to see most… skin and lots of it… lol, kinda… Bora takes the Hunks (Jericho Rosales, Carlos Agassi, Piolo Pascual, Deither Ocampo, and Bernard Palanca) and puts them in their own comedy… a typical Filipino comedy along the lines of Home Along Da Riles (lol… so funny… anyone remember Ober Da Bakod? lol)… I only saw one episode, but its amusing if you appreciate Filipino-style comedies… lol… The Philippines puts half-naked men or women in print ads for anything… pencils, paper, detergent, cell phones, “loading”… lol
SURVIVOR: PALAU CBS I didn’t see much, but I just have to say that Stephenie is probably the best female contestant on the show ever…
ALIAS ABC For once, I actually liked Nadia… Shades of LOST during tonight’s episode in the way they flashed back to Nadia’s past… overall interesting episode… but I really, really miss the old ALIAS… Also… Lena Olin will be back for the SEASON FINALE!! Yay!!
ON TV TONIGHT, REVIEWED TOMORROW: PRECIOUS’ FAREWELL, PASSIONS NBC; THE APPRENTICE 3 NBC; THE OFFICE, AN AMERICAN WORKPLACE NBC; WHY JULIET MILLS SHOULD WIN THE EMMY, PASSIONS NBC; NCAA SWEET 16 CBS
THE AMAZING RACE: THE QUITTERS AFTERMATH CBS I can’t believe how much people are defending Romber‘s taking advantage of a rule. And I just got even more pissed off to remember that TAR1’s Nancy & Emily were slapped with a 24 hour penalty for not doing the Road Block… Oh man, now THAT was great television, Team Guido beat Nancy & Emily to the Fast Forward, but end up being almost 24 hours behind the other teams… Nancy & Emily would’ve ran for the million if they had just done the Road Block…
AMERICAN DREAMS NBC Man… Patty is getting a lot of action, how many potential boyfriends has she had now? I didn’t think about Jack possibly going to jail for the bribes, but of course he and Helen overcome another obstacle… I guess they are a fairy tale… Meg, once again being stupid and naive… following those hippies? and then wanting to follow Paris Hilton who is probably one of the most untalented people ever… what the hell was that? she just stood there, squinted, and attempted a smile… I don’t see anything to like about her at all… Anyway, back to American Dreams, JJ’s heading to NASA… that is so cool… and it was pretty nice seeing him coach. And they went and did it, they completely forget/ignore Sam/Meg other than the recap at the beginning of the episode… ugh I knew it was going to happen…
ALIAS ABC Nice to see some Jack/Sydney bonding… I still didn’t get what was going on though… I noticed Mr. Franco Kelly from DAYS OF OUR LIVES guest starring as the new villain of the week… Ugh, I’m really haiting this self-containted episodes business…
AMERICAN IDOL PERFORMANCES & RESULTS FOX After Tuesday, Nadia shot up as one of the best singers, for me, in this screeching competition. I was sad to see Lindsey go, I thought she had a good voice, if she picked a good song… Mikalah needs to go very soon… then the Rockers and Scott and Anwar.
SURVIVOR: PALAU CBS I only watched a little bit, I didn’t know what was going on with Tribal Council… it seems like everyone’s hooking up this season, I think its the choice of wardrobe, all they wear is underwear all day…
BLOCK 2: CALCULUS SHCP Great class today… funny stuff being discussed in our little group of 9 + Murph… the backpack hiding reminded of last year’s Calculus class (which I enjoyed a lot more than this year’s class) when Mike and Pat put Albert’s backpack out in the hall and he didn’t even know about until after class… one of the many funny moments in that class last year…It was funny how Murph was clueless about the shirts and sweaters too…
AMERICAN DREAMS NBC It’s funny but I just realized that Nathan is played by Keith Robinson… I didn’t know the actor’s name before, but just reading it now, it sounded familiar… and I remembered, he was the Green Lightspeed Rescue Ranger… lol, I think it was seeing it yesterday morning on ABC Family… lol… And some bad news… for the season finale on March 30th… guess who’s back? Milo Ventimiglia aka Chris… ugh… I thought we were done with him 🙁
SURVIVOR: PALAU CBS That was stupid… a Home Depot challenge… geez, and here I thought that Jonathan and Wanda would come back… what a let down… this season’s challenges as defintely more physical… the producers are just waiting for a smackdown… lol
THE APPRENTICE 3 NBC This episode was actually okay… Chris looked like he was about to jump George… he seems to be a pretty relaxed guy and then he just exploded in the boardroom… lol… John deserved to go, he was pretty annoying…
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA SCIFI A great episode… that prophecy was eerie… pretty cool… very fast paced, but in a good way… I didn’t get Baltar’s line at the end about being “an instrument of God” … lots of “fracks” in this episode… someone is pregnant, lol… that celebration at the end, its like they found Earth or something… they didn’t celebrate like that when they found water…lol
POWER RANGERS: DINOTHUNDER vs. POWER RANGERS: SPD ABC FAMILY THE FIRST SIX EPISODES
POWER RANGERS: DINOTHUNDER vs. POWER
THE FIRST SEVEN EPISODES
DAY OF THE DINO [PARTS 1 AND 2,
BEGINNINGS [PARTS 1 AND 2,
No question, Day of the Dino was the
better premiere by a mile. We got perfect introductions to the three core
rangers, we got the return of “the Great Tommy Oliver,” there was a lot of
unmorphed fight scenes, the morphed battle and the zord battle at night was
amazing, we met who would become one of the most evil and unrelenting villains
ever, and overall it perfectly laid the groundwork for the season. Beginnings started out okay with the three rangers, but then it all
went downhill from there. The villain is a freakin’ prick, he lets a little
girl boss him around… what the hell?
BETTER PREMIERE: DAY OF THE DINO [PARTS 1 AND 2] … BY A MILE
The 3rd episode is always the Red Ranger doubting
himself and him being able to deal with his new leadership role. SPD’s 3rd
episode didn’t do that. They made Jack look like an asshole which didn’t
end with this episode, he continues to be a jackass to the team. Sarcasm:
“what a great leader.”
In DinoThunder, Conner had to weigh his options and ultimately decide becoming
a Ranger was more important. Not only that, this episode set up Tommy becoming
the Black Ranger… AND the beautiful Emma Lahana sang at the end of the
BETTER EPISODE: WAVE GOODBYE
LEGACY OF POWER [PART 1]
This is a tough one, Legacy of Power
was a clip show commemorating the 500th episode. It also revealed that Hayley
was a valuable ally. Walls, I have to concede, was the better episode.
We got to see more of Sky’s character and how he has done everything to become
the Red Ranger, the leader, but unfortunately he became the Blue. While this
story seems a little too serious for SPD, standing alone, it was a good
BETTER EPISODE: WALLS
BACK IN BLACK [PART 2]
Hmm… an episode focusing on the return of
“the best ranger of all time” or an episode focusing on a mechanical dog…
I think the former.
BETTER EPISODE: BACK IN BLACK [PART 2]
DIVA IN DISTRESS
Diva in Distress was an excellent episode
solely on the fact that Emma Lahana sang again… but there were also other
reasons. We got another Conner/Kira moment… a great fight scene
in the parking garage… amusing subplot… the beginning of the Tommy/Zeltrax
fued… and we meet Dr. Anton Mercer (who would of course become an integral
part of the series). A-Bridged revealed that Bridge likes toast…
and lots of it… okay…
BETTER EPISODE: DIVA IN DISTRESS
SAM [PART 1]
Game On was one of the weaker episodes
of DT, but comparing it to Ocean Alert and Its a Mad, Mad
Mackeral this episode was good. It had A LOT of unmorphed fight scenes,
and that is something we haven’t seen with SPD and their team of “models.” Sam [Part 1] just added another annoying kid to the list of PR’s annoying
kids. This is a freakin’ two parter? WTF? This is a lose-lose situation.
Either this two-parter goes nowhere and its a waste of two episodes, or that
little kid becomes a Ranger… either way, its crap.
