Recap: The Amazing Race 33, Episode 7 – Gently Down the Stream
Kim & Penn and Raquel & Cayla depart first at 8am with the other three teams departing at 8:15am. Teams must drive themselves in Volkswagen T-Roc convertibles to Tour de Fautea where they will eat some cazu marzu, a cheese brought to life with maggots.
Raquel & Cayla let Kim & Penn lead the way. They stop for directions and Penn is able to use his high school French to get pointed in the right direction. But Kim & Penn end up missing the turn, which allows Raquel & Cayla to move into first place.
After the little snack, teams will face the Detour: Row, Row, Row Your Boat or Gently Down the Stream. In Row, Row, Row Your Boat, teams must choose a fish and then paddle a transparent kayak to search the water for ten matching fish they must collect to exchange for their next clue. In Gently Down the Stream, teams will hop on a 15-minute Aquavision boat ride to observe ten metal fish. They will then be given a booklet from which they must choose which slip has the correct order of fish they saw.
Raquel & Cayla initially choose rowing, but decide to switch and join with Kim & Penn who choose the other side of the Detour. Penn says he likes the girls again after having been annoyed they jumped ahead of them on the way here.
Ryan & Dusty choose rowing while Raquel & Cayla and Arun & Natalia choose the other one. They stick close together.
Kim & Penn and Raquel & Cayla work together to spot all the fish and help to memorize them. The other teams arrive just as the two teams flip through the booklet.
Kim & Penn choose their slip and get the thumbs up as do Raquel & Cayla. They can now drive to Port de Plaisance in Bonifacio.
Similar to the two leading teams, Arun & Natalia and Lulu & Lala decide to work together with memorizing the fish. Ryan & Dusty, meanwhile, are having a bit of trouble as their boat is taking on water and they flip over.
Kim & Penn and Raquel & Cayla arrive at the Road Block: Who’s feeling knotted up? In this Road Block, teams must repair holes in fishing nets.
Cayla and Penn decide to do it and they get started.
Back at the Detour, Ryan & Dusty are able to finish the Detour in 3rd. Lulu & Lala ask for a check, but get it wrong. They and Arun & Natalia quickly hurry back to the boat and decide to split up the fish they will need to memorize. That works and both get the next clue. They hurry to catch up.
Ryan & Dusty arrive at the Road Block and Ryan gets started. Penn, meanwhile, finishes first and they can now run to the next Pit Stop: Bonifacio Cliffs. Raquel & Cayla are close behind them. It’s a foot race to the Mat and it is Kim & Penn who claim first. They get a special drink and are also winners of a trip to Turkey. Raquel & Cayla settle for 2nd.
Raquel & Cayla make a turn, but Arun & Natalia keep going and end up at the Road Block in 4th. Natalia decides to do the Road Block. Ryan finishes as Lala gets started.
Ryan & Dusty finish as Team #3.
It’s down to Arun & Natalia and Lulu & Lala. Lala finishes the Road Block next and she and Lala check-in as Team #4. Arun & Natalia are last, but this is another Non-Elimination Leg.
Alright, so I’ll just say upfront. My attention tonight was on the Olympics and watching Chloe Kim winning Gold again and watching the free skate in men’s figure skating. So I just sped through this episode of TAR. And honestly, it felt really flat. Again, it just felt like a very COVID Era episode and Leg.
When it’s just maggot snacks, simple Detour and a simple Road Block, they really should squeeze in one more Active Route Info task. Especially when there’s only five teams left. I guess they want to limit interactions with locals. But you know, it’s just something you come to look out for on TAR. COVID can’t be an excuse for everything, after all.
This being a Non-Elimination wasn’t really a surprise considering how many episodes there are left. So that also took a bit of the excitement away.
But the tasks were really just very straightforward. There wasn’t much opportunity to get ahead or fall behind. A TAR dictionary-definition Linear Leg.
But considering it was a Non-Elimination, I guess it really didn’t matter how barebones the Leg was. It really felt like a filler Leg even though driving through Corsica looks very nice in that VW convertible.
So maybe it’s because my attention was elsewhere this evening. But overall, this was just a meh episode.
My Subjective Team Rankings
And because this was just a so-so episode, nothing really changes in my team rankings. All the teams did fine. I do not fault the teams for working together on the Detour. That was one of the few times where it’s perfectly fine to team-up and work together to complete a task. It’s really a far cry from “alliance” and all that TAR32-type of nonsense.
Anyway, Arun & Natalia are definitely the luckiest team ever on TAR. Saved from Elimination three times now. That’s pretty crazy. But I agree with Arun, they definitely need to step it up more or they’ll just be out next Leg.
Lulu & Lala‘s great momentum came to a halt this week, sadly. But they too still have a chance to step up their Race as well.
Meanwhile, Kim & Penn, Ryan & Dusty and Raquel & Cayla, in that order, seem to be the top contenders. So, just to keep things interesting, I’ll be rooting for Arun & Natalia and Lulu & Lala more to break up the frontrunners.
