Leg 19.08 – “My wish is we not get eliminated!”
The All-Stars are in the home stretch as they begin the 8th Leg of the Race. Teams must take a train to the city of Kranj.
Upon arrival, teams must make their way on foot to the Main Square.
Here, teams will learn a traditional Slovenian folk song which involves harmony. Teams must perform the song to the crowd in the Main Square, in perfect harmony, to receive the next clue.
Teams must now find a bus that will take them to Bled Castle where they will find the Detour: Correspondence or Currency.
In Correspondence, teams will use a Gutenberg printing press to recreate an official correspondence from the castle’s history. When they have successfully printed a copy, each team member must memorize half and then successfully recite the contents of the letter to the courier to receive the next clue. If teams fail to recite the letter correctly, they must burn their copy and start the entire task over.
In Currency, teams will learn how to and successfully forge two souvenir coins. They must then search several pots of coins around the castle for two matching coins to receive their next clue.
After the Detour, teams must head to the cellar where they must correctly cork and seal two bottles of wine which they must bring with them to…
…Hotel Park, which teams must make their way to on foot.
And here, teams will find a Double U-Turn Board! After checking in, teams will encounter the Road Block: Who’s ready for a sweet treat?
For this Road Block, teams must learn how to make Bled’s famous version of the Cremeschnitte, the Kremna Rezina. Once their dessert is approved, teams will have to eat a large portion to receive their next clue.
After the Road Block, teams can now make their way to the Pit Stop:
The Church of the Assumption of Mary in the middle of Lake Bled.
Teams must row themselves across the lake. BUT! Teams must ring the bell and make a wish before checking in at the Mat.
The first team to check-in at the Mat will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.
The last team to check-in WILL be eliminated.
This is also the Trigger Point for this Leg of the Race. If any team does not ring the bell before trying to check-in at the Mat, the final U-Turn or Yield of the Race will be activated on the next Leg.
The last team to check-in here WILL be eliminated.
So our visit to Slovenia last Leg and this one was really just to feature the stunning location of Lake Bled. Again, like last Leg, I’m not sure if it would be best to visit with snow or without snow. I think both can bring different and interesting situations.
This Leg definitely feels a little bare, compared to the usual TARPHDME Leg. So I tried to make up for it with challenging tasks instead. Plus there’s a lot of walking throughout the Leg as well which should add to the challenge.
First up, we have teams taking the train to Kranj. I think Kranj could probably host a full Leg on its own. But again, Lake Bled is the focus of this Leg. The folk song task should help separate the teams a little bit. Performing in front of huge crowds can always be fun on the Race.
The Detour should hopefully feature Bled Castle well. There could be other tasks around Lake Bled too. But I have these here for now. I tried to make both Detours more challenging than they initially could be. The printing press task is something that’s been on TAR before. But I added the memorization aspect to give it a different dimension. Plus if they fail, they’ll have to do the printing press over again which can get tedious.
Also tedious will be teams having to dig through coins throughout the castle. I decided to have a little needle in a haystack aspect to this side of the Detour to maybe balance out the memorization of the other side.
As Lake Bled is obviously a picturesque locale with many a resort feel, the Road Block kind of features that aspect of the area. And a cooking task is always an easy task to insert into any Leg. Hehe
With any “Do X before the Mat” task, our hope is always that teams will overlook that detail or does something wrong which could result in losing out on first place. Or worse, getting eliminated because of it. Also the extra walking could mess teams up as well. As could the rowing across the lake too.
Overall, I think this would be an excellent TARUS Leg. For TARPHDME, maybe missing a task or two. But still a competitive Leg.
