MAALAALA MO KAYA: PAINTING
Starring Heart Evangelista and Geoff Eigenmann
By LJDB
Filipino dramas (movies or TV) tend to overdo things a little bit; overdramatic, unrealistic writing, pointless plot twists.
However, sometimes all those things manage to create an engrossing, very emotional story. That is the case with this week’s episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya, entitled “Painting.”
The episode reunites the popular love-team of Heart Evangelista and Geoff Eigenmann in a true story of a star-crossed couple that almost lost it all.
Heart and Geoff star as Emily and Louie. After losing touch with each other for years, Emily’s brother brings Louie back into their lives. Since Louie is known for making every girl he’s been with cry, Emily’s mother and brother had forbidden him and Emily to ever get involed. When they do begin to develop a relationship, Emily’s mother, following a stroke, urges Emily to go to the United States and become a TnT and stay in the country illegally.
Thinking she would return, Louie anxiously waited for her until he realized that he must go to San Francisco to affirm his love for Emily. Fearing hurting him even more than she already has, and wanting to help her own family, Emily pushes Louie away. When she realizes she can’t let him go, they both stay in San Francisco.
But for Louie, its time for them to return to the Philippines. After Emily insists on staying, events lead up to a tragic event that could end everything forever.
An truly emotional story compounded by Heart and Geoff’s flawless performances overshadow the sometimes cliche Filipino drama always presented on “Maalaala Mo Kaya” episodes. With half the episode being shot in San Francisco and Burlingame, a sharp comparison between the Philippines and the United States is shown. “The states” may not be “paved with gold” like many Filipinos would like to believe.
The heartbreaking scenes definitely affect you and leave you thinking about what you would do for love.
