Leg 18.01 – “Please don’t wrap yourself around my waist!”
New Clark City is being developed as a community of the future. A modern city with the hope of it becoming the new commercial and administrative capital of the country.
The New Clark City Sports Complex, host of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and the 2030 Asian Games (maybe), is a brand new, state of the art campus that serves as the training ground for the country’s top athletes.
And the centerpiece Athletics Stadium will serve as the Starting Line for this season of the Race! Oooo!
But before teams can get started, they’ll have to retrieve their backpacks which are lined up on the cantilever rooftop of the stadium. To reach them, teams will start outside the stadium and must use a mechanical ascender to pull themselves up to the roof. They will then hook their backpacks to a pulley system to lower their bags into the interior of the stadium. Once their bags are safely on the track, teams can lower themselves as well to receive their next clue.
Teams will need to complete the task as quickly as possible as the first six teams to set foot inside the stadium will get tickets on the first flight to their first destination. The other six teams will have to settle for the second flight. What teams don’t know is that the two flights are scheduled to arrive 15 minutes apart in their first destination.
And that first destination is South Korea!
Teams will be on one of two flights from Clark International Airport to Incheon International Airport, arriving at either 6:15am on Jin Air or 6:30am on Asiana.
Once in Incheon, teams must take a train into the heart of Seoul and to the main transit hub, Seoul Station. Their clue will be waiting for them outside.
That clue tells teams to hop back on a train to Jeonju Station.
Upon arrival in Jeonju, teams must choose a 2020 Kia Soul EV.
Teams must drive themselves to Eco-Adventure Park in Wanju where they will find a Double Road Block: On Your Feet or Off the Ground.
For this Double Road Block, each team member will be holding a tray with glasses filled with liquid. The team member who wants to remain On Your Feet will have to walk across a hanging bridge while holding the tray.
The team member who will be Off the Ground will ride down a zipline.
The team who spills the least amount of liquid will win a prize at the Pit Stop. What teams don’t know is that the prize is a Fast Forward Note Fold! The winning team will receive a brand new Samsung Galaxy Fold which they can only use to redeem their Fast Forward award and receive the Pit Stop location. Teams can use the Fast Forward Fold before the end of the 10th Leg.
Teams can now drive themselves to Gwanghalluwon Garden in Namwon and search for their next clue. And that clue reveals the Detour: Tough Tuho or Samsung Selfies.
In Tough Tuho, teams will make their way to Chunhyang Theme Park. Here, they must challenge two locals to a game of tuho and they must win. The team members will then face each other and must win a best of five match while scoring a specific number of points.
The loser of each face off must choose one medieval punishment before continuing.
In Samsung Selfies, teams must make their way to Jayeonmadang Animal Experience Farm.
Using a provided Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, each team member must take a solo selfie with an ostrich and goat (after feeding them) and finally with a snake.
After the Detour, teams must drive themselves to Jeonbuk Shooting Range where they will find the Road Block: Who wants to give it a shot?
For this Road Block, teams must use a rifle to shoot at and hit 10 targets.
This is also the first Trigger Point for the Race. If any team misses less than 10 targets, the U-Turn or Yield will be activated on the next Leg.
Teams must now drive themselves to Imsil Cheese Theme Park.
Here, teams must make cheese by hand and then eat their creation before receiving their next clue.
Teams can make their way to Jeonju Hanok Village.
Here, teams must put on a pair of traditional hanboks and search the village for a couple wearing matching hanboks to receive the next clue.
And that final clue tells teams they must make their way ON FOOT to the Pit Stop, Omokdae.
The first team to check in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+. BUT! They will also win a Manual Trigger Point. Teams will be able to use a Manual Trigger Point after passing any regular Trigger Point in order to activate the U-Turn or Yield on the next Leg. If teams do not use this power before the end of the 10th Leg, the U-Turn or Yield will automatically be activated on Leg 11, the penultimate Leg.
The last team to check in here WILL be eliminated.

“Director’s” Commentary
And we’re off once again!
First off, it’s another stadium Starting Line! Lol! This time though we want to feature New Clark City. Which, as of May 2019, isn’t even completed yet. But of course, that doesn’t matter here on TARPHDME!
The Starting Line task is straightforward and should be very exciting. It of course gives us the great opportunity to use our 8K UHD drones! Yes! 8K! Woohoo!
Staring in New Clark City also allows to highlight the new future metropolis and the SEA and Asian Games possibilities. Having the Starting Line here also leads to the convenient use of Clark International Airport which has good flights to Incheon.
So this entire first Leg borrows from Arirang TV’s Tour Avatar. Specifically, the Jeonbuk episodes featuring K-pop group VICTON:
With some original additions.
First off, we have teams navigating the Seoul subway and then hopping on Korea’s excellent trains to Jeonju. Then we have our loyal sponsors, Kia, for what will make for a great self-driving Leg.
First up is the Double Road Block and I just wanted to have this be a full Leg. This certainly helps. A simple, straightforward zipline feels so boring these days. So I decided to add the TAR28-like twist of holding a tray of glasses while on the zipline (and on the hanging bridge). And to make this task even more relevant, give the teams the chance to win the Fast Forward Fold. And yes, this season the Fast Forward Note has become the Fast Forward Fold. Originally, this Leg was planned long before Samsung canceled the release of the Galaxy Fold. Lol But they’re still selling them to those who want them. And there’s no reason for TARPHDME to pass up the moneys opportunity of course!
Anyway, the device is different, but the use is the same. Teams can use the Fast Forward Fold whenever they want by texting for the Pit Stop clue. Easy!
Next up is the Detour. And both are just activities VICTON’s Sejun and Byungchan did on Tour Avatar. Both are straightforward, but with unique challenges as well. The torture aspect of the tuho side of the Detour should be fun. And teams with animals on the other side of the Detour is always good too. Plus another Samsung promo opportunity.
We then have the Road Block which is a simple shooting range task. Good spot for the Trigger Point as well.
Then we have a few more Route Markers with simple tasks to really help fill out the leg. The cheese making and eating is fine. And the hanboks in the Hanok Village is also just an extra task.
Having teams running around in hanboks looking for the Pit Stop should be hilarious!
One new twist though is this Manual Trigger Point power! It basically allows a team to activate the next Leg’s U-Turn or Yield. Just a little bit of a drama inducer of course.
Overall, this is a very full opening Leg. As it should be!
