TV Shows on DVD reports today that seasons 12 and 13 of The Amazing Race are finally coming to DVD! And best of all, both sets will include Elimination Station, the special web series from CBS.com that followed eliminated teams into Sequester. This will be the first time Elimination Station will be included on TAR DVDs and the first time TAR DVDs have had any special features since the non-manufacture-on-demand releases of seasons 1 and 7.
Now for some sorta-bad news. The on-demand DVDs have always had poor covers, but these TAR12 and TAR13 covers seem to have taken a step further! That neon purple on TAR12!
With siblings Nick & Starr a million dollars richer, Dandrew enjoying their new shoes as consolation prizes, Ken & Tina staring over again, and mother and son Toni & Dallas safely back home in the US, the 13th season of The Amazing Race has reached the finish line.
Eight. Eight months since that… interesting finale to season 12. And a long eight months at that.
But this season, we’re back to normal and another Amazing Race is on the way in just a couple of weeks.
Now as for the season itself, TAR can never be anything but amazing. Even at its “worst” and I use that term lightly, TAR still manages to excite and thrill and get you on the edge of your seat week in and week out.
The route this time around wasn’t that exciting, though it was great to go to Kazakhstan and Cambodia for the first time. And India, as always, produced incredible legs. CBS revealing the entire race course before the season began was an interesting idea. It was nice to see where they were going to be headed, but it did take a little away from the guessing where they’ll go next every week. I guess it was an effort to squash location spoilers?
Of course, knowing where they’re going is just one part of what makes the show so exciting. The race itself with all the Road Blocks and Detours and how the teams react to everything that is thrown at them.
A highlight of the season, and the entire series really, is meeting Phil’s father in New Zealand. How awesome was it to see father and son together welcoming teams to the Pit Stop?
The teams this season were okay, there really weren’t teams that stood out.
And in a way, TAR13 was a little bit of a letdown from TAR12, I guess in terms of teams and locations and tasks. Not saying it was bad, just expecting a little more I guess, but then again, TAR is season to season and there are so many pieces that have to get together to either make things work or have it fall flat.
But anyway, another good season done and another (hopefully even better) is on the way.

Toni & Dallas… Well, they raced almost mistake-free until they got to Russia when they made the biggest mistake you could possible ever make on the Race. The “unprecedented” mistake that cost them the Race and possibly a million bucks. I really think a spot in the final 3 (at the very least) was theirs to lose. And they did. But I guess more importantly, they grew closer and strengthened their relationship and it looks like Dallas found a girl. Plus, now that the season is over, he can admit “it” really was him.
Ken & Tina… Despite slight annoyance with them at the beginning, Ken & Tina no doubt raced well throughout the Race. That was also in spite of their tense relationship and hopes of getting back together and starting over, which we saw at the finish line… a nice finish for them and nice to see their story come full circle and develop over the course of the Race. They look to have a great life ahead of them as both seem very committed to working things out.
Nick & Starr… Dominant, sure. And they have a well-deserved win. A little boring? Maybe. A young athletic team beating a middle-aged couple and two self-described frat boys? Not surprising. I guess I want to see winners really work for the million and the Spangler siblings really just coasted through the Race. I like them, but it would’ve been nice to see them fighting for it more (fighting for million I mean, not with each other, though that might’ve been good TV, yeah?).
Terence & Sarah… They had some kind of magic helping them in the Race. Either that or lots of luck. When it looked like they were out of it, they magically appear out of nowhere actually passing teams as they climbed their way back up. It is really amazing how they managed to escape elimination, but not just squeaking by, but being so far behind, but jumping all the way to the front when it counted. And they managed to grow less and less annoying as the legs went on which is always a good thing for a team.
Marisa & Brooke… They seemed like they were slowly getting into a groove that could’ve taken them far, but they just couldn’t keep up. They did enjoy themselves in the Race and that is always something every time should do, while still be able to keep their eye on the finish line.
Mark & Bill… Read the clue! A lot of the teams could’ve had that tattooed on each other’s forehead, and Mark & Bill was one of them. They raced very well in the firs two legs, but just screwed up big time by not reading the clue thoroughly in the 3rd. They were nice guys and definitely appreciated being on the Race.
Aja & Ty… Typical couple drama for a leg or two, but nothing much from them really during the Race. They had a chance to be a sleeper team in the Race, but wasn’t able to keep up and eventually couldn’t overcome them falling behind.
Anita & Arthur… Now they could’ve been “hippies” I could get behind. Too bad they were out first, it would’ve been nice to see them go a little further in the Race.
Kelly & Christy… They rank above Dandrew if only because they had one almost excellent leg when they showed so much potential in if they don’t make stupid mistakes, they could win legs. But that was short-lived potential as after their one good leg in Cambodia, they went on to make even dumber mistakes and oversights that they just did themselves in.
Mark & Stephanie… The disadvantage of being one of the first out, you fail to make an impression. From what little we saw of them, they were all right.
Dandrew… What is there to say? Likeable? I guess. Rootable? Not really. Being possibly the worst team ever in the final 3, coming in 2nd to last in almost every leg, making some of the worst, smallest mistakes, multiple times, in every leg… I don’t know.
The Leg HERE WE GO… There’s no time to waste as Nick & Starr the first clue on the final leg of the 13th season of The Amazing Race. Teams will travel to their final destination city, Portland, Oregon. There, they will take a taxi to Tilikum Christian Camp & Retreat Center in Newberg, Oregon where they will find their next clue.
Nick & Starr can’t believe they’re at the end of the Race, but that they are still a long way from the end. They have a good feeling about the final leg. Dandrew say they persevered through the Race and that they aren’t going to just be chicken feed for Nick & Star and Ken & Tina in the final leg (he spoke too soon). Their “Moscow miracle” brought them to the final 3. Ken & Tina have their eye on the prize as they always have, and they are positive about where their relationship is heading. Tina promises not to help anyone but themselves this leg.
All the teams take the same Lufthansa flight through Frankfurt and upon their arrival in Portland, the Race has really started.
Nick & Starr get out of the airport first, but Ken & Tina are right behind. Dandrew, already has trouble with their taxi driver and the rattlesnakes are cued. Nick & Starr’s driver drives past the street they were to turn at allowing Ken & Tina to get to the clue first and find the Detour.
In this Detour, teams must choose between two activities used to improve the balance and reduce the fear of people working in Oregon’s logging industry. In High & Dry, each team member must climb 30 feet up a tree, walk across a 40 foot log and leap for one half of their next clue hanging from a trapeze. If they fall without their clue, they have to start over. In Low & Wet, teams must walk 850 feet across the water on log bridges to get their clue.
Ken & Tina choose the High & Dry as Nick & Starr arrive. Dandrew are still lost and they use the driver’s cell phone to try to get them to the retreat center.
Ken quickly grabs his clue half, and Nick catches up. Tina’s helmet becomes a nuisance as she stops every couple of feet to put it back on the top of her head to avoid the strap from choking her. Starr, meanwhile, passes her and the siblings are off first, but Ken & Tina are right behind.
SEA OF CLUES Teams now make their way to The Bridge of the Gods where they will zip line 2000 feet to the island below for their next clue. On the way, Nick & Starr’s taxi driver drives past the exit again, allowing Ken & Tina to move back into first. The siblings arrive just as Ken & Tina get their next clue. Before moving on, teams have to complete a puzzle board that had the teams needing to remember their time on the Race. Each team had a puzzle board that had 10 spaces. Uncovering each space, teams would find either a Route Marker, Detour, or Road Block symbol. They’ll use those clues to search among 150 clue boxes for pictures that correspond to the symbol and the leg of the Race. When they have the correct picture in the space, a green light will light up and the teams can move on to the next leg. When they have all 10, they can look for their next clue.
Ken & Tina and Nick & Starr are neck and neck at the task while Dandrew is still on the road.
The pressure is on as the two teams run around the field of clue boxes. Tina doesn’t want to worry about the siblings, but Nick & Starr pass them and regain the lead.
They get their next clue telling them to head into downtown Portland, to the Portland Building where they’ll have to search for a green dinosaur located at the Standard Plaza across the street. Their next clue is waiting there.
Ken & Tina are right behind Nick & Starr into downtown Portland. Ken & Tina make a right turn while Nick & Starr head straight. The siblings arrive at the building first with Ken & Tina getting stuck in traffic.
Nick & Starr find dinosaur and the next clue telling them to head to the Alder Street Cart Pod where they must search for a Russian Food Cart. They take off while Ken & Tina stay close behind.
At the Russian Food Cart, the lady hands Nick & Starr their next clue telling them to make their way to “where the magic is in the hole” referring to Voodoo Doughnut where their next clue is waiting outside.
Nick & Starr ask a woman if she knows where it is, but she suggests looking in a phonebook. They eventually get directions from a guy on the corner.
GO GO GO Ken & Tina get their clue and ask that a woman for directions. The same woman who didn’t know for Nick & Starr gives Ken & Tina specific directions and even tells them to go this other way since the people before them went the long way.
Running through downtown Portland, Nick & Starr finally arrive at the clue which tells them to head to Pittock Mansion and follow the marked path to the finish line. They run to find a taxi.
Ken & Tina get the clue and they head off to find a taxi also. Neither team has any luck getting one fast as a taxi with a passenger refuses Ken’s $50 offer.
Both teams finally find taxis and it is a taxi ride to the finish line. Ken & Tina say a little prayer as Starr is about to freak out with excitement.
The Philiminated teams are already cheering at the finish line as the winners’ taxi arrives and Nick & Starr come running to win The Amazing Race 13.
Ken & Tina take 2nd and Phil asks them if they were able to reconnect on the Race to which Ken replies with reaching into his Race pack and pulling out a pouch holding a ring to which he puts on Tina’s finger (with Phil looking over his shoulder) and says he wants to start their relationship over right at that moment. They kiss.
Dandrew officially finishes 3rd and Dan says what a perfect way to end the Race, exactly the way started, with a bunch of mistakes.
And so another season of The Amazing Race is over and we have to wait only 10 weeks for the next season!
Leg Overall Much kudos to the TAR editors for making the episode very exciting even though it was pretty obvious who was going to win (long before the last taxi ride).
It was also great though that Nick & Starr and Ken & Tina stayed so close throughout the leg, you didn’t need editing for that.
The Detour seemed pretty unexciting, but the Road Block-esque final task was great. It would’ve been more awesome if it was right before the finish line like in TAR8 and TAR9. Since those two seasons, I’ve thought it would be so much more exciting to have the final task right before the finish line. The added tension of having the finish line just around the corner or a run away is so much better than a taxi ride.
Though the teams seemed to make it harder for themselves than they need to, the task was nowhere near as epic as TAR12’s final Road Block. I’d love to see next season’s final task be as challenging and then have the finish line be far enough away, but within sight from the location of the final task. Ooo… the drama and tension of being almost there! 😀

Toni & Dallas Explain What Happened By LJDB, December 3, 2008
In an interview with Fancast.com Toni and Dallas Imbimbo, the mother and son team from the 13th season of The Amazing Race revealed just what happened to get them eliminated in Moscow, Russia.
On last Sunday’s episode, Dallas, who was in the middle of completing a Road Block, had left his Race pack in a taxi cab which drove off with the money and passport inside.
Dallas revealed what exactly happened, “I was in the cab for about an hour. The driver didn’t know where he was going. I said, “I need a new taxi.” So, as I was getting out to do the microphone change [the Amazing Race staff] undid my fanny pack with all my stuff in it because they had to get to the microphone. When I got out of the first taxi, it wasn’t attached to me anymore. I hopped into a new taxi, took that to where I needed to be and then went to pay. I didn’t have any money. That’s when I realized I’d left it in the previous taxi.”
Dallas then took that 2nd taxi to a hotel and used the concierge to take a 3rd taxi to the apartment complex. He had the concierge tell the 3rd taxi he would pay later, hoping to get some money from the other teams, but production eventually paid for it.
Dallas and Toni then decided to go “rogue” and take any penalty that might be assessed when they chose to take the metro instead of a more expensive taxi. Unfortunately, the lady with the shetland pony would not give them their clue without having taken a taxi. So they had to make their way back. Cameras were not allowed on the metro after 3pm and it was 3:15, so they had to walk the whole way back which took two hours.
And then of course, Phil had to come to them on the race course as darkness was falling, they say most likely to prevent them from begging any more, especially as the evening set in.
The Leg PENULTIMATE And so we are off on the penultimate leg of the 13th season of The Amazing Race.
Curiously, Toni & Dallas are off first, but we aren’t given any departure times. Very unusual.
Their clue tells them to take a taxi to Severnoye Tushino Park and find a retired Russian nuclear submarine. Inside, they must search for the sonar room where they’ll find an actor who played an officer in the film The Hunt for Red October who’ll hand them their next clue.
Dallas talks about how happy they are winning a leg and Toni wants Dallas to find that one great happiness in life. Tina again talks about their relationship and that they feel better about it, but she’s looking for consistency. Starr talks about how she always gets her way. Dandrew talk about their spotty performance, how they are “the comeback kids,” and how making the final 3 would be a miracle (Heh).
In their taxis, the teams draw little submarines to get their drivers to understand where they need to go. It helped.
Toni & Dallas, Ken & Tina, and Nick & Starr apparently have to wait for Hours of Operation because they magically run into the submarine together. They run around and find the guy who gives them their next clue.
COUNTING LENIN AND STALIN ISN’T ROCKET SCIENCE The clue tells them to travel by taxi to the “Graveyard of Fallen Monuments,” an outdoor museum at Park Iskusstv and search for their next clue.
Nick & Starr are in a taxi first while Toni can’t seem to keep up with Dallas in 2nd. Ken & Tina are last to grab a taxi, but they grab one with GPS.Dandrew bring up the rear as they get splashed by a truck and a puddle.
Teams sit in traffic, Ken & Tina cough through their driver’s smoking and Dandrew’s English speaking driver takes them to the wrong park. When the teams finally make it to the park, they find the Road Block.
In this Road Block, teams must scour the park filled with Soviet era monuments and count the monuments of Lenin (6) and Stalin (2). After getting the numbers to get 62, they’ll head to an antique book store on Stary Arbat (Arbat Street/Old Arbat) and tell the shopowner the number who, if correct, will give them a book. If wrong, they must wait 10 minutes until giving another guess. With the book, written by Mikhail Bulgakov, they must use the number 62 to look for their next location, the former apartment complex of the author on the street printed on page 62 of the book: Sadovaya Street. There, they’ll find their waiting partner, and their next clue.
Nick gets started and tries to figure out who’s Lenin and Stalin in the park. Toni & Dallas arrive, and an out of breath Toni says Dallas should do it. Before Toni leaves, she entrusts the Race fanny pack with the money and passport to him. And the foreshadowing begins.
Ken & Tina arrive at the park as Nick finishes the Road Block and takes their GPS enabled cab. After a little spatting over hoods and pneumonia, Tina gets to the Road Block. Dallas tries to figure out who’s who as Nick get his book and makes his way to the apartment.
When he runs to find a taxi, he passes right by Dallas who doesn’t notice him. Meanwhile, Tina is right behind him.
Dallas (counting 3 Stalins) makes a wrong guess (36) and has to wait the 10 minutes. His next guess is 46 which is wrong again. Tina arrives.
At the Bulkagov Building, Nick & Starr get their next clue. They must travel to Sokol’niky Park where they will look for a lady with a Shetland Pony who will hand them their next clue.Dandrew finally arrives at the Lenins and Stalins and Andrew gets going.
Dallas and Tina compare numbers. He tells her what he guessed and she says she’ll tell him what she gets as she goes in to guess 52 which is wrong.
RUSSIAN RIDES Nick & Starr arrive at the pony and get the Detour.
In this confusingly detailed Detour, teams choose between two forms of public transportation in Moscow; Ride the Rails or Ride the Lines. In Ride the Rails, teams make their way on foot to Sokol’niky train station where they will catch a metro to the Ulitsa 1905 Station. There, they will find a marked snack shop where they’ll be given a traditional pastry known as a samsa. On the wrapper, they’ll find their next clue directing them to Kitay-Gorod Station and then find a statue dedicated to the men who created the Cyrillic alphabet. Nearby is a babushka who will hand them their last clue in exchange for the pastry. The clue, also containing a picture of their next destination, tells them to then take the metro to VDNKh Park and search the station for the next clue.
In Ride the Lines, teams makes their way to a nearby bus stop where they’ll catch a trolley bus to Krasndsel’skaya. There, they’ll find a key maker who will hand them their next clue attached to a locker key which tells them to take another trolley bus to Rizhskaya Train Station. At the station, they’ll use their key to open up a locker revealing their next clue inside with a picture of their next destination, VDNKh Park Station and search for their next clue.
Nick & Starr, thinking Nick’s New York subway experience will help, choose Ride the Rails. At the Road Block, Andrew just about finishes up with his driver helping, while Toni and Dallas try to figure out their findings. She tells him to guess 63 while she goes to pay her taxi, but Dallas is wrong and waits. He tells Tina when she comes back, and she goes in to guess 62 and gets the next clue leaving Dallas at the store. Before she leaves, she yells to Dallas that it is “the next number down” and that he “owes” her.
Andrew thinks he’s got the right answer and goes to the store while Dallas finally answers correctly to get his clue. Tina arrives at the apartment building and tells Toni she helped Dallas which prompts Ken to say that it was bullcrap.
BAD LUCK CATCHES UP Dallas gets out of his taxi in front of the apartment building and then realizes he’s left his Race pouch in the taxi. He walks into the complex and breaks the bad news to his mother. They realize they can’t get to their next destination because they have no money for a taxi. They walk back to Dan, but then remember he doesn’t have the money. Toni says they’ll push on while Dan says he really wouldn’t help them even if he had money. He points out that mother and son are stranded.
They walk and try to find out where Sokol’niky park is. Two men tell them where it is and then they give them some money. Toni repays them with a kiss on their cheeks. The men tell them the metro is 20 rubles while a taxi might be 400 rubles. With the little money they have, they choose to take the metro. *cue rattlesnack/doom music*
Meanwhile, partner Andrew finishes the Road Block as Nick & Starr begin their Detour. Ken & Tina arrive at the Shetland pony lady and get their clue. They choose Ride the Lines. They initially get on the wrong kind of bus, but are pointed in the right direction.
Toni & Dallas arrive at Sokol’niky Park and look for the pony. They turn around and Dandrew are running towards them. They all pick up their speed but Dandrew have to stop at their Speed Bump first. In this Speed Bump, Dandrew has to take part in one traditional Russian dance number, following the steps of the dance group. When they have done the dance correctly, they’ll get their next clue.
Toni & Dallas on the other hand approach the lady with the Shetland Pony, but she refuses to give them a clue. They realize that they took the metro not the taxi and they have to go all the way back to where they came from. With no money, they approach another two men who reach into their pockets to help them as well.
THE FINAL 3 REVEALED Nick & Starr complete their Detour and get their next clue, to head to the Pit Stop at VDNKh Park. It is no surprise, the siblings finish 1st and win a trip to Anguila. More importantly, they are one of the final 3 teams running for the million.
Dandrew, at their Speed Bump, as expected from last week’s craziness with marching, have trouble at first, but seemingly get it on their 2nd try. They get the Detour and also choose Ride the Lines.
Toni & Dallas take the bus back to the apartment complex and then the taxi to the pony. They ask a lady on the street for info and she happily gives them 50 rubles.
Meanwhile Ken & Tina and Dandrew head to the last destination of the Detour, VDNKh Park Station for their next clue. While Ken & Tina wander around the station, having no idea what the picture means, Dandrew find the last clue and head to the Pit Stop. Ken & Tina see Dandrew running towards the Pit Stop and they follow.
Both teams arrive at the mat, Phil declares Dandrew 2nd (2nd!!!), but tells Ken & Tina they have not completed their Detour. They backtrack and eventually find the clue near the station and Phil checks them in 3rd, completing the final 3 teams racing for the million in the final leg.
Toni & Dallas continue on their Detour, but Phil appears out of nowhere, walking out of a building to stop them in their tracks to let them know they have been eliminated from the Race.
Overall Well, I guess I’ll get it out of the way. As soon as Dallas walked in, head down into the little plaza of that apartment complex, Toni encouraging him that they were still in I knew it was over. And then he tells her what happened and their faces stayed long the rest of the episode. It was a little depressing seeing them look so miserable the rest of the leg, but still pushing forward and hoping for the best.
It was an otherwise excellently planned and complicated leg.
I wonder why there weren’t any departure times at the beginning of the episode? Usually, even if the Pit Stop is more than the mandatory 12 hours (and is some strange 18, 24 or 48 hour Pit Stop) they usually show us something, but they didn’t. Weird.
It was also a little off putting seeing the teams just magically run through the gate at the submarine together. Strange editing there.
But the Road Block and Detour was well-planned and pretty clever. How in the world did they manage to figure out the number of Stalin and Lenin statues would somehow correspond to the page in a book? Special print maybe?
And the Detour… whoever put together that scavenger hunt… much kudos.
So 10 episodes done, 1 left (I miss the 13 episode seasons, more teams, more non-elims, double legs…).
Toni & Dallas… I felt so bad for them. They ran a very good Race, not making any mistakes really and just doing not quite enough to get them to 1st except for last leg. I guess the Race bad luck just accumulated the entire time and it all came crashing down on them this leg. I really wanted them to do well and they were, but it just wasn’t their day. They were my favorite team this season and they’ve been a great pair to see really enjoy the Race and have fun with the Race and each other.
Ken & Tina… They’ve still got a lot to work out, but they fully deserve to be in the final 3. It is both a good thing and a bad thing helping other teams. Them helping other teams, in general gives them good Race karma, but then it can also be called a stupid Race move because that critical moment of helping another team could mean you being eliminated. But they’ve raced well and they have a shot.
Nick & Starr… They win another leg, what’s new? It seems so predictable that they will easily walk to the finish line in 1st place, but this is The Amazing Race, you never know what will happen.
Andrew & Dan… Really, every week I always say they need to step it up otherwise they’ll get eliminated… well it turns out they just need luck to through to the next leg. They’ve made huge blunders each leg but is saved by another’s teams one even bigger mistake. They’re fairly likeable and all, but do they deserve to be in the final 3? Not based on the way they’ve ran this Race.
Quotes from Episode 13-10 Toni: “I’m not sure Dallas knows who Stalin and Lenin are. I mean, I paid a lot of money for his education, but I’m not sure he’s gonna know how to tell the difference.”
The Leg SHOE SHOPPING Birthday boy Nick and Starr set off from the Pit Stop first as they learn their next destination is Moscow, Russia. Once there, they’ll take a taxi to Krutitsy Monastery where they will light a candle to receive their next clue.
Toni & Dallas are off next and Dallas notes how hopefully they’ll finally get 1st. Ken & Tina, again, relate how their rocky relationship is affecting them in the Race, but that they’ll work through it.
At the airport, the Dallas and Starr love story continues and he tells her how frustrated (in a flirty way of course) he is with the siblings winning every leg.
It turns out Dandrew never did get their shoes back from the puppets, so they “jacked” some slippers from the maid at the hotel. They also mention how no one expected them to make it as far as they have… “we have everything to gain and nothing to lose.” At the airport, foreshadowing their money troubles later on, they lower their taxi fare and then figure they have enough money to buy some shoes at the airport. $160 for the shows I think.
RHYTHM OR FOODMorning comes, and all teams board the 6:05am flight from Almaty to Moscow. Teams come running out of the airport looking for taxis, and it is Dandrew who grabs one first by running to the parking lot. They’re off, and then worry about the taxi possibly being too expensive.
Nick & Starr get in a taxi, ask if the driver speaks English, and take “Нет” to mean “Yes.” So begins the siblings’ taxi troubles.
But they and Toni & Dallas arrive at the monastery first and their next clue tells them to go to Kolosok Camp, a decommissioned military base on the outskirts of Moscow to find their next clue.
Nick & Starr get in their taxi first and leave Toni & Dallas behind. Meanwhile, Dandrew arrive next at the monastery with Ken & Tina in last.
Toni & Dallas calculate they’re spending $100 to go from each clue to the next and worry they could be out of money quick. They get to the camp first and find the Detour.
In this Detour, teams will take part in “two activities that will entrench will them in Russia’s strong military tradition, Boots or Borscht. For both Detours, teams will have to don a complete military uniform. In Boots, teams will join a training squad and learn a traditional parade march. When ready, teams will fall in line and complete one lap of the parade grounds and wait for the okay from the drill sergeant. In Borscht, teams will find a mess tent and serve borscht to a table of 75 waiting soldiers.
Toni & Dallas choose Boots and they head into the tent to find uniforms with their names on them. They headed outside to watch a demonstration on how to put on traditional foot wraps before they could put on their boots.
Nick & Starr meanwhile are having more trouble, not understanding a word of their driver who is lost. Starr gets very frustrated (the grimace not leaving her face the entire leg), Nick tries to calm her down. Back at the camp, Ken & Tina and Dandrew arrive and both choose Boots. Andrew says he has 6 years of marching band experience, so the Detour would be easy for him.
Toni & Dallas start marching, and Ken & Tina are right behind. Toni wants a rhythm, Dallas thinks its easy while Tina has fun and Ken thinks she was cute side by side with the soldiers. Andrew, meanwhile is having trouble putting on the foot wraps and Dan starts to get impatient, wondering if they should do the other Detour.
Toni & Dallas get the “Да” from the drill sergeant and get their next clue telling them to make their way to the town of Zhukovsky and to a bakery where they’ll find their next clue.
As they are leaving, Nick & Starr finally arrive and choose Boots. Dandrew gives up on putting on their uniform and decide to do the Borscht but don’t realize until later that they still have to wear a uniform for the other Detour.
Ken & Tina get the yes and are off. Nick & Starr (who are wearing each other’s uniform, I must add) begin to march as Andrew, on their way to the Borscht, realize their mistake.
Dandrew relates how they have made so many dumb mistakes that a compilation video should be made.
Nick & Starr breeze past Dandrew. Dan can’t get the rhythm of the march and after laughs from the soldiers and a frustrated Andrew, they decide to do the Borscht.
FLOUR POWER Toni & Dallas meanwhile arrive at the bakery and find the Road Block.
In this Road Block, teams must become a delivery person and unload 50 55lb bags of flour and take them into the bakery, arranging them horizontally on the floor. They lady will hand them their next clue when finished.
Dallas gets to it, taking two bags in at a time and we are introduced to the tough shop owner. (“That won’t do!” “Be careful!” “Follow instructions!”) Toni worries Dallas will get himself exhausted. Ken & Tina arrive and Ken starts unloading.
Back on the road, Starr’s frustration continues. Back at the camp, Dandrew starts serving the Borscht to the hungry soldiers and have some fun with it. (“Anna Kournikova. Hm? Maria Sharapova!”) When the finish, they head to the “yum yum” bakery and again worry about running out of money.
At the bakery, Dallas finishes and they get their next clue to the Pit Stop, Neskuchny Sad Park. Toni & Dallas are off just as Ken gives the shop owner kisses on the cheek before they leave. They see Nick & Starr on their way out as Nick starts the Road Block.
“Hee’s not fit” says the shop owner as Nick pushes through it. After letting their non-English speaking taxi driver go, Nick & Starr now run around looking for a taxi. Starr, her frustration growing, jumps in the middle of the street, in front of cars and taxis hoping to find one.
Dandrew make it to the bakery with Dan doing the “simply, Neanderthal” Road Block. As Dan finishes, Nick & Starr find a taxi, who doesn’t know where he’s going and they switch to another.
All four teams are on their way to the Pit Stop. Dandrew’s money worries return as Nick & Starr’s latest cab driver assures them that they are going in the right direction (“You’ve said that a million times.” *shrugs* “What can I do?”)
At Gate 14, Toni & Dallas run into the park looking for the library and the mat. Ken & Tina are right behind them.
Ultimately, Toni & Dallas arrive at the Mat first… Toni: “Say it Phil.” Phil: “Say what?” Dallas: “That you’re team number one!” Phil: “You really want me to say that?” Mother and son finally win a leg and a trip to the Dominican Republic.
Ken & Tina come in 2nd, telling Phil they’re on their way back up.
Nick just isn’t having Starr’s crying and tells her to stop since it’s not going to help anything. They head into the park, but her impatience continues. Meanwhile just outside, Dandrew doesn’t have enough money to pay for the cab and have no idea what to do. The taxi driver isn’t letting them go and starts smoking a cigarette until giving up on them.
Nick & Starr think they’re last, but end up 3rd. Dandrew arrives last, but it is unsurprisingly a non-elimination.
Overall So we are almost at the final leg. One more to go and we’ll have our final 3 racing back home.
Toni & Dallas officially make 3 of the final 4 and possibly (if Dandrew is eliminated next week), have the only 3 teams to have won legs be the ultimate final 3.
This leg spent a rare amount of time in taxis. I don’t remember a time when taxi drama took even more time than airport drama usually would in an episode (though no amount of taxi drama could top Charla & Mirna’s pseudo-taxi drama in All-Stars).
The military Detour is fitting, though uneventful save for the hilarity of Dan’s lack of coordination.
With the Road Block, imagine the divorcees doing that manual labor. I am surprised though the clue was so obvious… “Who has a strong back?” Usually, they are more cryptic than that, especially for tasks that require heavy lifting. (Like TAR6’s Senegal Road Block that had almost all the women of the teams lugging huge baskets of salt through the water)
Not the most exciting episode of the season, nor the most surprising result, but we’re down the wire and the finish line is almost in sight.
Toni & Dallas… It is great to finally see them take 1st. They’ve definitely worked hard for it. I think they have been the only team to avoid making any mistakes during the Race and as long as they continue that way, they have a good shot.
Ken & Tina… Great for them continuing to make steps to mend their relationship. It’s definitely showed in the Race and their racing is a testament to them working well together. Barring any big mistakes, they certainly have a shot at making a run for the million as well.
Nick & Starr… Everything’s not so happy-go-lucky when you’re trailing huh? Looks like Starr can’t handle the pressure well and if Nick can’t calm her down, that could not be a good thing for them in the final 2 legs of the Race. It was good to see them knocked down a peg or two, if only to remind them that they aren’t just skating by and that they have to continue to push themselves to stay at the top.
Andrew & Dan… Their luck comes in handy again, but it can only take them so far. I don’t know about people rooting for their underdog status, but they are right about a compilation video of their mistakes being very, very long. Their level of escaping their own little mistakes is unprecedented on TAR, no question and could’ve only been passed by Kelly & Christy if they were still on the Race. As I say every week, they have a steep hill to climb if they want to go to the end.
Quotes from Episode 13-09 Andrew: “We’re looking for the monastery.” Dan: “That red thing could sure be it. It looks churchy.” Andrew: “Only Dan and I would say something looks ‘churchy’.”
The Leg RACE LOVE Nick & Starr leave the Pit Stop first for the 4th time as they get their clue telling them to make their way to Almaty, Kazakhstan. Once there, they’ll take a taxi to the Al Agro Chicken Factory to search for the next clue on the grounds.
The siblings wonder when their luck will run out, while Toni thinks they’re flying under the radar. At the hotel, while Toni and Nick are concentrated on looking for flights, Dallas and Starr continue their flirting (signaled by harps playing). They find one flight on Lufthansa that takes them into Kazakhstan at 11:50pm.
Terence & Sarah head straight to the airport, and while Terence stresses about something, Sarah says she’s in a very good mood. Ken & Tina say they’re doing a better job of communicating, but not yet where they want to be.
Dandrew realize the teams they are up against are not to be messed with, but that they’re still in it.
At the airport, Terence & Sarah head to Aeroflot and find a flight through Moscow that gets them in at 1:20am, but with only 2 tickets. Ken & Tina spot the siblings and Toni & Dallas at Lufthansa and head straight there. They get tickets and only 3 teams make the first flight through Frankfurt. Terence & Sarah settle for the next flight through Moscow, while Dandrew end up on a later flight through Dubai.
FAST CHICKENSThe first flight arrives in Kazakhstan and they all rush to the chicken factory only to find our first Hours of Operation of the Race, allowing for the last 2 times to catch up before it opens at 7:30am.
On the way, Sarah thinks they’ll be eating chickens which Terence hopes isn’t the case.
As the gate opens, the teams sprint to the waiting clue box where they find the Road Block and the Fast Forward.
In this Road Block, teams will “have a close encounter of the bird kind” (according to Phil). They’ll have to head inside the chicken shack and search through a sea of 30,000 chickens for one of only seven golden eggs, which they will exchange for their next clue.
In the Fast Forward, teams must head to a local restaurant where they will eat a local delicacy, Beshbarmak, whose main ingredient is the fat from the rear end of a sheep. When both team members finish their servings, they’ll get their Fast Forward clue.
Nick & Starr and Terence & Sarah both rush to the Fast Forward. Sarah isn’t sure about going for it, but Terence assures her and they both agree this is a Race and they have to do what they can.
Meanwhiel, Toni, Andrew, and Tina head into the shack for the Road Block and Toni finds a golden egg first as she and Dallas get their next clue.
Teams now have to search the grounds for giant crane trucks which they must take to the Koktobe Arch at the foothills of the Tienshan Mountains. There they will follow a marked path to meet some Mongol Warriors where they will wait for their next clue.
Toni & Dallas head off, while Tina is right behind Andrew with the eggs. At the Fast Forward, Nick & Starr dig right in while Terence, a vegetarian, says he hasn’t eaten meat in 15-16 years. He realizes it’s for a million dollars though and starts eating. Starr starts to gag, but so does Terence. The siblings continue eating as Terence debates whether or not he can finish. Sarah says she can keep going, but they ultimately decide Terence won’t be able to and they quit the Fast Forward and have to rush back to the chicken farm to do the Road Block, allowing Nick & Starr to win the Fast Forward.
MAD FOOLS Meanwhile, Toni & Dallas are led into a clearing by a Mongol Warrior and await their clue which is attached to the foot of an eagle that flies towards them and lands on the arm of a warrior. The clue reveals their Detour.
In this Detour, teams must choose between Play Like Mad and Act Like Fools. In Play Like Mad, teams take a taxi to the Museum of Folk Musical Instruments where they will learn to play a simple Kazakh folk tune on two instruments, the dombra and the shang-kobuz. When the instructor thinks they’ve learned the song, the teams will head to the park and earn tips equivalent to $1.50 to exchange for their next clue. In Act Like Fools, teams make their way to a children’s puppet theatre. There, they will don a 2-person cow costume. Then dressed as a cow, teams will walk to the corner of Zhibek Zholy and Kunaev where they will find a marked stall and drink a glass of milk, which will reveal their next destination. Teams will then walk to the Zelyoniy Bazaar and find the marked butcher stall in the meat section where they’ll deliver themselves and receive their next clue.
Toni & Dallas choose the cow and head back down as Ken & Tina head up. Dandrew are lost in the city, as they get frustrated when no one will even speak to them. Terence & Sarah arrive back at the chickens as Sarah heads into the chicken sea and like her care with the birds last week, takes care in asking the chickens to stand up so she can look under and to move so she can pass through. She finds the egg and they’re off to the warriors.
At the Pit Stop, Nick & Starr arrive 1st and each win a 180-hp wave runner.
At the puppet theatre, Dallas takes the front half and Toni takes the back half and head out just as Ken & Tina walk in. On the way to the milk stand, mother and son have fun as Dallas moos his way along the streets.
Tina, meanwhile, expresses her concern of being in the back as she is a navigator so she’s the head and they head out.
Back at foothills of the mountains, Andrew walks ahead of his partner, while Dan is a little behind. Andrew asks Dan if he’s okay and he offers to carry his bag, but Dan simply asks his partner to walk with him, but Andrew won’t have it. (“The Race isn’t won by walking everywhere.”)
Back to the cows, Toni & Dallas arrive at the street corner but pass by the milk stand. Ken & Tina see it and she drinks the glass of milk but has no idea what to do next and think they’re at the wrong stand. Toni & Dallas come walking back and Ken & Tina leave as the mother & son get their clue at the bottom of the glass and head to the bazaar.
Ken & Tina head back to the stall and find the clue, but think they have to return the costume first, so they walk back to the theatre. Dandrew is still back at the mountain and are trying to decide who’ll be where in the cow.
MOO-VIN’ TO THE PIT STOP Toni & Dallas arrive at the market and find the marked stall and receive their clue telling them to make their way on foot to the Pit Stop, Old Square, the oldest part of the city. They must bring their cow head with them to the Mat.
As they leave the market, Ken & Tina come walking up and Dallas asks where’s their costume. They tell Ken & Tina that they need to still be wearing their costume, but Ken & Tina head in anyway. The lady won’t give them their clue without their costume. They head back.
Toni & Dallas say they shouldn’t have told them the critical piece of info. Regardless, they arrive at the Mat, Phil’s eyebrow in full force and take 2nd.
Terence & Sarah head off from the mountain as Dandrew leave their shoes at the theatre and head out in their costume. They ask an older man to take them to the milk stand and he does, for 1000. Ken & Tina return to the butcher and they finally get their clue. They finish 3rd.
WALK TO THE FINISH It is now between Terence & Sarah and Dandrew.
Terence & Sarah are being led a nice man who asks if they’re tired. They say to go faster. Dandrew get their clue from the butcher, but don’t read carefully enough and take a taxi to the Pit Stop. Phil tells them to go back and read their clue correctly.
Terence & Sarah get their clue at the bazaar and we are to believe they are neck and neck. Dandrew has another little spat walking back to the Pit Stop about being patient with each other.
Despite their disagreements, Dandrew barely escape elimination again and place 4th.
Terence & Sarah arrive last at the Pit Stop and despite Phil’s misleading pause, they are Philiminated. They say they’ll take away a lot from the Race and hope to spend the rest of their lives together.
Overall Finally! We get some fun animals on the Race, not only live but huge talking ones as well.
We get the first hours of operation on this Race (and it was a legitimate one). I can’t complain too much about that bunching.
I’m kind of so-so on the Fast Forward though since I’m not really a fan of the eating challenges. I guess they’re standard, but I’m sure they could come up with better, still cultural tasks that don’t involve food going into the Racers and coming back out a few minutes later.
The Road Block was not the typical needle in a haystack task, though I wouldn’t even really call it that either. It was just great having all the chickens there and it was funny and I guess a little cute seeing Sarah being gentle with the chickens this week as she was with the birds at the hospital last week.
The clue with the Mongol Warriors reminded me of a TAR8 clue where the teams met a trained elephant. An eagle is just as awesome I think, couple with the warriors.
The Detour, I’m sure the instruments and asking the old ladies for money would be fun, but the cows were just so much more fun and probably easier as long as you read your clue carefully.
It’s a wonder that even down to the final 5, teams still make the little mistakes that could cost them the Race. Lucky for Ken & Tina and Dandrew this leg, but those kinds of little things could really spell the end of the Race for you if you aren’t lucky enough to recover or someone else makes a bigger mistake than you.
And Nick & Starr take 1st again. While it’s great to see a team doing well, it makes me want the Fast Forward back on every leg again just to see other teams come back from behind or something and take 1st. That could have an adverse affect too, but I guess that’s the price to pay.
Toni & Dallas… It was great seeing them have fun together, especially during the Detour, while still racing well. So far, they and Dallas’ love connection are the teams that haven’t made any major blunders and that bodes well for them as long as they keep it up. Speaking of love, that’s all fine as long as they keep it out of the Race and know when it’s time to step it up and concentrate, which they have managed to do.
Ken & Tina… Lucky for them, their two oversights didn’t cost them the leg, which could have easily done in another leg. They too are doing well, despite that, and you can definitely see them working better together.
Nick & Starr… What can be said? They have emerged as the dominant team, which in the end, doesn’t really mean much unless they keep it up to the finish line. We’ll see how their smooth sailing hits rough waters next week (if it does).
Terence & Sarah… They really have come a long way in terms of racing. They’ve made less mistakes, yet Terence’s intensity still needed to be toned down at times, but I guess it’s just part of his personality and Sarah is comfortable with that. They seem to really be in love, so best of luck to them in the future.
Andrew & Dan… Lucky guys. They’re managed to escape elimination almost every week, placing either 2nd or 3rd to last in every leg but the first. While Dan had a point about not winning any races by walking, Andrew also had a point about being patient with his partner, and I do think Andrew has been a little more patient with Dan’s go-go-go attitude. Still, they have an uphill climb to make it into the Top 3, but anything is possible.
Quotes from Episode 13-08 Dallas: “The only thing I know about Kazakhstan is Borat.” Toni: “And we’re not gonna mention that to anybody.”
Phil: “Teams will have a close encounter of the bird kind.
Tina: “We’re going to put on a cow costume at the children’s puppet theatre.” Ken: “Guess what half I am.”
Toni: “Ahhh! The wardrobe witch!”
Dallas: “Yes! I’m going to make my mom be the ass of the cow.”
Ken: “Mooo! Moooo!” Tina: “If you don’t calm down, we’re never going to get this done.”
The Leg THE RACE STARTS NOW The teams get to leave during the day this leg and they stay in India as their first clue tells them to make their way to the Deshbandhu Apartment Complex where they will find their next clue at the complex’s central park.
Nick & Starr worry their early dominance puts a target on their back, but they say they will do anything to win regardless of how the other teams might feel about them, and that includes telling “little white lies.”
Kelly & Christy are happy they are moving up in the rankings, while Toni is happy about learning more and more about her son Dallas every day. Terence & Sarah say running the race with a romantic partner makes the Race more complex, but they feel like they’ve been working better at focusing as the Race progresses.
Dandrew says they both have “awesome strengths” but at opposite sides of the spectrum, and they hope they’ll have a task where they can use both and do well at. Ken & Tina realize their problems, but they say they will overcome their challenges.
HOLI SMOKES OF PAINT Nick & Starr arrive at the clue and find the Road Block.
Who’s ready for a colorful experience? In this Road Block, teams must take part in a traditional Indian celebration known as the Holi Festival. Team members must make their way up three ladders and search through hundreds of envelopes marked “Try Again” for one of only six marked “The Amazing Race” which will contain their next clue. While in the middle of the plaza though, the locals will be pelting each other and the Racers with colored dye and water in the festival’s tradition.
Starr heads into the plaza and up the ladder as the locals begin pelting her with the dye. She finds the clue and runs back to Nick. The clue tells them to head to Charity Birds Hospital, which caters to injured birds, where they must search for their clue in one of the cages. The siblings get a move on, but not before Nick gets his own pelting of color making him look much more colorful than Starr who actually did the Road Block.
Meanwhile, Kelly & Christy’s taxi driver does not know where to go allowing Toni & Dallas to reach the Road Block in 2nd. Dallas decides to do the Road Block and as soon as he runs into the plaza they go at him. Toni moves away form the revelers while she loses her son in a cloud of pink dust and smoke. He finds the clue fast and they are on their way.
The divorcees arrive at the Road Block and they decide not to have their taxi wait since he didn’t know how to get there in the first place. Kelly decides to do the Road Block and the locals have at her as soon as she enters the plaza. She runs back to her partner at the gate needing water after the paint goes into her mouth. Not even a minute into the Road Block, Kelly is already completely covered.
READING COMPREHENSION And as we’ve seen many times in the past, the divorcees either do not read the clue at all or they simply misread it as they think they must only pull one clue at a time and bring it back to their partner to see if it is the right one. Kelly goes back in now with a cap and a scarf over her mouth.
Terence & Sarah come running in, and Terence decides on doing the Road Block. Once he finds the clue, he runs to Sarah, pushing anyone who’s in his way. (Very polite yeah?)Terence vividly describes how he feels with paint in his nose and mouth to a “I’d rather not hear or see it” Sarah.
Meanwhile, Dandrew arrive next and head into the sea of paint. Dan does the Road Block and they move past the divorcees. A frustrated Kelly heads back in, trips and falls, she says she’ll “seriously die” but they eventually read their clue correctly and she finds it, but not before they both get more colorful dye thrown at them.
Ken & Tina finally arrive at the sea of paint and dye and water and Ken braves it all to do the Road Block. Tina gets some color as well and is not happy about it.
Kelly & Christy, who let their taxi go, struggle to find another taxi or an auto rickshaw to take them, but no despite grabbing onto the tuk tuks or offering lots of money, no one seems to want to take these weird, colorful ladies into their vehicles.
They finally find a taxi as Ken & Tina finish the Road Block as well and all six teams are on their way to the Bird Hospital in Old Delhi.
LITTLE TAGS OR LITTLE CHILIS Nick & Starr arrive first at the hospital and they pass the Speed Bump waiting for Ken & Tina. Inside, after taking off their shoes and socks as custom, they search the cages for their next clue… a Detour.
In this Detour, teams have to choose between two professions seen in the streets of India, Bleary Eyed or Teary Eyed.
In Bleary Eyed, teams will head to a street corner at Nai Sarak where they will help the department of power by looking up at the power lines from street level and keeping track of the numbers on small tags that sporadically appear along the power lines. They must then find the man at a sewing machine who will verify their numbers and then direct them to a shop, New India Stationers, where they will plug in a musical Ganesha to receive their next clue. In Teary Eyed, teams make their way to a spice market, find a marked stall at Ram Bhandar and pick up two 40lb bags of dried chili and deliver them on foot to Sharwan Kumar & Son. There, they will use a mortar and pestle to grind enough chili to fill a container up to a designated line. Once completed, they’ll receive their next clue.
Nick & Starr choose Bleary Eyed and head to the street corner. Meanwhile, Toni & Dallas meet some kids who guide them to the Hospital and then to the street corner. Toni expresses how proud she is of her son, especially after seeing him enjoying running with the kids to the Detour.
Terence tries to pour water in his nose as they arrive at the hospital. Terence things the clue is underneath the seeds of the birds in the larger cage/cells and he closes the door as Sarah enters. She puts her hands in the tray, careful not to disturb the bird minding its own business in the tray and politely asks it to move. She then picks the tray up, with the bird still firmly stuck in the tray with no clue to be found. They eventually find the clue around the corner in a small cage.
Dandrew arrive next in 4th and head to the streetcorner. Meanwhile, Kelly & Christy decide it’d be fun to scare people in the street with how they look so they scream and growl their way to the hospital with the taxi driver unsure of what is happening in his taxi.
TEMPORARY ALLIANCE OR NO TEMPORARY ALLIANCE?
Ken & Tina, making up time, arrive at their Speed Bump. In this Speed Bump, they must make their way to a Sikh temple and volunteer to serve holy water to the patrons of the temple. They must serve the people until there are no more wanting water at which point they can resume the Race.
Kelly & Christy bring up the rear.
At the power lines, Nick & Starr have no idea what they’re looking for as they walk down the street. When they see the small tags, they go back to retrace their steps and they see Toni & Dallas. They try to pretend they have no clue what to do, but they both find the first number at the same time and they decide to just form a temporary alliance to complete the hard Detour.
Terence & Sarah meanwhile arrive at the Teary Eyed Detour and they lug the sacks to the next destination. On the Road, Kelly & Christy get an unsolicited guided tour from their tricycle driver; “Bank of India, built by British 1857… American McDonalds…” But they just want to make it to the next clue.
At the Speed Bump, Ken & Tina have a fun time with the people. Tina learns some words while Ken pretends he’s selling hotdogs at the ballpark. Tina has to remind him it was holy water. After they’ve served all they can, they head back to the Hospital, but the traffic is a mess. They get out of the taxi and themselves guide their taxi through the street by making way and waving off rickshaws and motorcycles.
Meanwhile, Terence & Sarah get started with the very hot chili crushing as Nick & Starr and Toni & Dallas finish the Detour and head to the Pit Stop, Humayun’s Tomb.
Toni & Dallas are on the road first, but the traffic mess slows them down as Nick & Starr find a break in the traffic and take the lead all the way to the Pit Stop where they finish 1st. Phil has to call the greeter over though who is busy watering the grass, and after welcoming them to the Mat are told they’ve won a trip to Hawaii.
Toni & Dallas arrive 2nd, maintaining their strong showing from the last few legs.
DOWN TO THE WIRE Back at the Detours, Terence & Sarah struggle through the chili as the shopkeeper isn’t letting them off that easy. Dandrew and Kelly & Christy arrive at the power lines and instead of the small tags on the power lines, they write down the numbers on the storefronts instead. When they bring their numbers to the man at the sewing machine, he gives them the thumbs down. He even throws Dandrew’s notebook to the table just to show how tough he is.
Ken & Tina arrive at the Detour and are right behind the two befuddled teams. They know what to look for and breeze through the streets. An utterly confused Dandrew ask a worried Kelly & Christy if they want to work together, but they say no.
Terence & Sarah, meanwhile, finish their peppers and head to the Pit Stop to finish a strong 3rd.
Kelly & Christy finally look up to the power lines while Ken & Tina await the verdict on their numbers. The man pushes Tina aside, but then gives them a huge grin as they finish the Detour. On their way back to their taxi, they help Dandrew finally find the tags by pointing one out. Ken & Tina hope the good karma will come back for them in the future.
Dandrew and Kelly & Christy finally finish the Detour and they both head to the Pit Stop.
Ken & Tina arrive 4th, overcoming their Speed Bump with the help of the other teams’ mistakes.
Dandrew finish 5th and Kelly & Christy arrive last with their mistakes and not reading clues finally catch up to them and are eliminated. They are sad to be eliminated, but they are happy that the Race has shown them that they are best friends and that even after their divorces, they know that they have big things in store for them in the future.
Overall This was an Emmy-worthy ep if I ever saw one. Best episode of the season so far, lots of action and drama, plenty of hilarity, well-planned leg, great tasks… it had all the things that make TAR awesome.
The teams are fighting to the end, and the strong teams are separating themselves from the ones who are begging to be Philiminated next.
The competition is only going to get more heated from here on out, proven by the preview for next week.
This week’s Pit Stop greeter was fun… I guess he was tired of waiting and decided he had more productive alternatives for his time than waiting with Phil at the mat.
And those Detour guys, especially the sewing machine guy were definitely hamming it up for the camera, yeah? The Road Block looked like loads of fun (really!) until you get dye and paint in every orifice on your head.
I think this season has made it official official… India is the best destination TAR could ever go to. Every single India leg in the past has been classic, the country never ceases to produce awesome legs. There’s a little magic in India for TAR and I know many wouldn’t mind having India appear in every Race. (Or at least every other.)
Toni & Dallas… Well, no sign of romancing this week, which was good I must say. Instead we got more proud mom moments as Dallas looked like he was genuinely having fun with the local kids who helped them find their way around the busy streets. Not only do they continue to keep up the sweet mother-son bonding moments, they are also staying strong Race-wise.
Ken & Tina… Like in one of the earlier legs, there are times when I want to root for them and some times when I kind of scruch my face in confusion over how to feel about them. They were very nice to Dandrew, and good karma is always a good thing on the Race. But the few times either of them gets too intense or pushy or I don’t know… I do know that they really are good Racers and deserve to be in there. Their good finish this week should serve as a boost for their morale in the Race.
Nick & Starr… They’re positioned to be the team to beat. Their heads are in the competition (except for the flirting last leg), they are intense, they don’t make major mistakes, they get along well with each other, they know how to work the other teams… they could go all the way, no question.
Terence & Sarah… They started out as annoying… then became a funny fun couple… then back to a little annoying… then fit into the dysfunctional couple mold… and this leg, hilarity ensued. Strange personality swings, yeah? But in this leg, they did provide for some hilarious moments and that is what I want to see from them. A fun, though slightly dysfunctional couple, that Races well.
Andrew & Dan… The clock is ticking for these guys. They can’t seem to step it up in the Race. If they continue at the pace they’re in (and the preview, though never an accurate foreshadow, show that they run into some team dynamics trouble), they’ll be the next eliminated for sure barring another team making a huge mistake. They have been lucky so far thsi Race in escaping elimination, but as the teams get ready for the 2nd half of the route, the Race is getting more intense and either they step it up or they’re going to Elimination Station.
Kelly & Christy… Well, their huge problem that’s plagued them 5 out of 6 legs previous finally did them in this 7th leg. Reading clues never became so important until Kelly & Christy managed to misread their clues or just not plain read them at all in almost every leg this Race, causing to unnecessarily fall behind when they could’ve been one of the leading teams throughout. Making such simple mistakes, it’s a wonder how they made it as far as they did. They had personalities that were amusing at times, but annoying at others. And you can’t help but be dumbfounded by their misreading of clues. So, best of luck to them in the future, they did prove that they can do anything… or almost anything.
Terence: “I’m not going to watch us kill the happy family.”
Christy: “If you had to make out with Dan or Andrew, who would you make out with?” Kelly: “Oh man! Maybe Andrew, cuz he’s like different, with the big fro!” *giggle* *giggle* Christy: “Since you’re doing… uh, making out with Andrew, I’d have to make out with Dan. He might get up from the kiss and start pacing.” *giggle* *giggle*
Terence: “Who’s my girl?” Sarah: “You are!” *kiss* Sarah: “No, I am! I am, babe!” Terence: “You’re my girl.” Sarah: “Awesome. You go all the way up there and you get that clue babe, I LOVE YOU!”
Dan: “The Road Block was like a wild rave party. Except there weren’t any hot blonde girls walking around, it was a sausage fest of guys with paint. It’s like the girls never showed up.”
Nick: “I don’t know what the birds were doing in all those cages. I don’t even know if it was a bird hospital or if it’s a hospital for people and the birds are therapeutic. But I did get nervous walking around barefoot, I felt like I was possibly walking along bird droppings.”
Terence: “These birds are really messed up babe.” Sarah: “I know cuz it’s a bird hospital.”
Dallas: “Can you walk in front of me?” Toni: “Yeah so I can get hit by that motorcycle?!”
Sarah: “I feel like I’m carrying my own weight on my shoulders.”
Tricycle Driver: “Bank of India, built by British 1857.” Kelly: *nods* “It’s been there a while.” Tricycle Driver: “… American McDonalds…” Kelly: “Okay, thank you.” Tricycle Driver: “Central Baptist Church.” Christy: “Okay, but hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry.” Tricycle Driver: “I’m behind him.” Christy: “Yeah, I know… tell him to hurry.” Kelly: “He’s telling us the landmarks.”
The Leg STEPPING IT UP Nick & Starr depart the Pit Stop first after receiving their clue telling them to fly to Delhi, India. Once there, they’ll take a taxi to Moonlight Motors in Zamrudpur, Delhi for their next clue. The siblings rush off to the travel agent where the teams must buy their tickets.
As Toni & Dallas leave the Pit Stop next, we find out there is some flirting going on between Dallas and Starr. And he feels awkward with Nick and his mom around.
Ken & Tina are next and remind themselves that they have to get over their baggage and concentrate on the Race. Kelly & Christy are only a few minutes behind them and they say they’re having more fun traveling together than they ever did with their ex-husbands.
Terence & Sarah are close behind, and they too want to stay away from tension that’s affected them so far in the Race. Bringing up the rear, Andrew & Dan want to be less casual and realize if they don’t step it up, they’ll be done.
At the travel agent, Dallas & Starr continue their flirting, while we get foreshadowing of Ken feeling “helpless” and being annoyed by Tina’s over-control.The teams head to the airport and all of them take the same flight to Delhi, arriving at 4:15pm.
HOLY COWS (IN THE ROAD) Teams arrive in India and rush to find taxis. Nick & Starr get out first while Kelly & Christy are stopped by a seemingly unopenable glass door. Ken & Tina and Toni & Dallas get going next, hoping their taxi driver knows where to go.
In their taxi, Nick & Starr comment on Kelly & Christy’s short shorts and his advice to them to cover up, which they rebuffed because it was too hot. They think the divorcees will fall to pieces.Andrew & Dan, Kelly & Christy, and Terence & Sarah are trailing.
In the midst of Indian traffic, the teams see cows in the middle of the road, opening up their opportunity to make their commentaries on their new destination. No enlightening moments this time around though. They used them up in Cambodia I suppose.
Ken & Tina begin having taxi trouble as no one knows where they need to go, while Tina insist she does know. Nick & Starr, meanwhile, stumble upon their next clue, which is a Road Block.
In this Road Block, teams will help India’s rickshaws go green, literally, by painting the lower black portions of tuk tuks green to represent their transition to natural gas. After they’ve adequately covered the top yellow part and the inside with newspaper, they can start painting and when done, will be handed their next clue.
Andrew & Dan arrive 2nd and Dan feels comfortable and not-threatened by Nick & Starr as Andrew and Starr begin the Road Block.
Ken & Tina are still lost, Terence & Sarah, equally lost, pass Kelly & Christy who have stopped for directions. But the divorcees arrive after Toni & Dallas, who Starr is happy to help in any way.
Terence & Sarah arrive, while Ken & Tina make several stops for directions until they finally arrive at the autoshop.
With all the teams Road Block, it is all about who can get their rickshaws green as fast as possible. Dallas encourages his mom, Terence gets on Sarah’s nerves, while Tina gives unsolicited pointers to an increasingly annoyed Ken.
Andrew & Dan get their “best finish ever” as they finish the Road Block first and are given their next clue.Teams must now make their way to the Ambassador Hotel, where they will search the garden for an Indian doorman for their next clue.
After getting a paint refill, Nick & Starr finish 2nd with Toni & Dallas 3rd. Both teams get a taxi before Andrew & Dan.Ken & Tina jump to 4th while Kelly & Christy finish 5th leaving Terence & Sarah in last.
At the Ambassador Hotel, teams receive their Detour. In this Detour, teams must choose between two traditional ways of doings things in India, Launder Money or Launder Clothes.
In Launder Money, teams must make their way to a wedding hall and decorate a necklace with exactly 10 rupee notes adding up to 780 rupees. Teams will have to find change and use their own cash to get the right combination of notes. Then, they’ll take the necklace and find one of the waiting grooms who will hand them their next clue. In Launder Clothes, teams make their way to a laundry shop where they will choose an ironing station and iron 20 articles of clothing using a traditional charcoal iron. When the laundrywoman approves, she’ll hand them their clue.
Nick & Starr and Toni & Dallas arrive 1st and 2nd and choose the clothes. Ken & Tina are lost once again, and Andrew & Dan finally get to the hotel with Kelly & Christy right behind them both also choosing the clothes.
Terence & Sarah meanwhile finally finish at the Road Block and are on their way. Ken & Tina look for another taxi. Both teams eventually choose the money.
At the Detour, Nick & Starr find the iron is very hot and pluck gloves from their backpacks and start ironing. Cab luck benefits Kelly & Christy who arrive there next while Toni & Dallas and Andrew & Dan arrive 3rd and 4th respectively after not benefitting from the other kind of cab luck.
With no gloves stashed away in their backpacks, the other teams have to either grit their teeth or use other pieces of clothes to hold their irons as they get going with the Detour. At the wedding party (complete with elephants), Terence & Sarah and Ken & Tina search through the crowd and on the street for change for their necklace. Sarah denies a kiss to a local after they get their change.
A MOB AND A GUST TO THE PIT STOP At the irons, the newly minted Dandrew (thanks divorcees) manage to find something to complain about every few minutes as Nick & Starr get through their pile first and are of to the Pit Stop, Baha’i House, the national headquarters for the Baha’i Faith. They finish first and each win an environmentally friendly electric car.
Kelly & Christy take off to the Pit Stop and in their best showing yet take 2nd. Toni & Dallas end up in 3rd with Dallas making an astute observation of the insanity of the woman’s pot of fire on her head.
With three teams comfortably at the Pit Stop, the other three seem to be in the midst of chaos. At the wedding, with their necklaces in hand, Terence & Sarah and Ken & Tina push and shove their way through a throng of people at the reception, looking for one of the grooms who are actually sitting at the back of the hall with their brides. Dandrew at the ironing are not getting off easy with laundrywoman as she shakes her head at their “finished” clothes, which at one point flies off the table when a strong gust of wind comes passing through.
Terence & Sarah and Ken & Tina are handed their clues. Terence & Sarah are off to the Pit Stop and finish 4th, but Ken & Tina are chased by dogs looking for a taxi. Meanwhile a very jolly[/sarcasm] Dandrew finally finish their chores and head off as well.
Ken & Tina’s luck with cabs this leg kicks in, allowing Dandrew to slip into 5th.
The separated parents arrive last, but Phil has good news, it’s the first non-elimination leg of the Race. He tells Ken & Tina about their Speed Bump next leg and the Race goes on with an emotional Ken & Tina closing out our episode.
Overall Overall, it was another great episode. While not as edge of your seat thrilling as the last few, it still had some exciting moments.
The teams again stayed close together without pesky Hours of Operations forcing them to do so. The natural equalizer of airplane flights has been the only thing that’s bunched up the teams, otherwise they really are Racing neck and neck throughout the entire leg.
And the episode proved that anyone can be last if you don’t step up your game. With everything so close as it is (teams departing within a little more than an hour of each other from the Pit Stop!), teams must realize that they are all in danger of being eliminated regardless of where you finished last leg.
The ironing was a nice way to bring back Indian laundry to the Race, while it is always fun to see an Indian wedding incorporated as well, especially when elephants are involved.
Speaking of, teams haven’t had any animal encounters yet this Race, save for Ken & Tina being chased by dogs. Hopefully they do get some animal interaction, they’re usually some of the funnest (or is it funniest?) moments of the entire Race.
The non-elimination wasn’t a big surprise. And it looks like the drama kicks in next week. Can’t wait!
Toni & Dallas… Hmm… Race romances between teams have always had mixed results on a team’s performance. And usually one of the two involved gets Philiminated earlier while the other goes on to final 3. I hope that doesn’t happen to Toni & Dallas, or at least they get the better part of the deal. Regardless, Dallas referring to mom as his wingman was great and their leg was okay on all counts.
Ken & Tina… Well, a team dominating early falling to the bottom half of the pack (or even worse, last in a leg) is nothing new. And in Ken & Tina’s case, they got hit with bad cab luck, also a regular on the Race. We’ll see if they can recover next leg, and they’ve been able to Race well so far, so they could very well work their way out of the Speedbump next week.
Kelly & Christy… Well, they finally have a leg without making a dumb mistake and look where it takes them… 2nd place, almost #1. So they can be a very good team when they really Race and not let little mistakes get the better of them.
Nick & Starr… They’re reemerging as the dominant team to beat. We’ll see if the budding romance of “little sis” affects them in any way.
Terence & Sarah… Their tense relationship, or is it just their intensity in the Race, returns for another leg and once again despite missteps and a little luck not going their way, they manage to finish reasonably well. Luck really is on their side for the most part in this Race.
Andrew & Dan… It is good they realize they have to step it up or they’re out. But they didn’t seem to step it up aside from them finishing first at the Road Block. Who knows how much trouble they came across looking for a taxi after the Road Block, but they should have been at least able to stay in the front of the pack. And their less than enthusiastic attitudes at the Detour isn’t going to help them much.
Christy: “Cows are like a holy animal in India. I guess that’s why they’re not afraid to get hit.”
Dan: “They’ve been getting the luckiest breaks I’ve ever seen on this Race. Being, you know, two semi-attractive females. That’s helped them a lot so far.” Andrew: *snicker* “Two semi-attractive females…” Dan: *shrugs* Andrew: “That was good.”
Christy: “Please hold while I singe my skull with this blazing hot iron.”
Christy: “These clothes look better than anything we’ve worn in the last three weeks.”
Dan: “I mean, you get the picture. Ironing clothes or putting on flowers on a necklace. It’s like picking the lesser of two evils.”
Dallas: “You have fire on your head! … That’s insane!”
