Recap: The Amazing Race 31, Episode 10 – – Chugga Chugga Choo Choo!
Teams will now fly to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. While teams are on different flights, the bikes they will need in Kampen will only be unlocked at 9am.
Tyler & Korey say everyone knows the U-Turn is coming up.
Teams must now ride their tandem bikes to Jachthaven. Their next clue reveals the Detour: High or Dry. In High, teams must pick up a cow, load it on a tractor and bring it into town to hoist it up the bell tower. In Dry, teams must pole vault across a ditch to retrieve eggs and cheese, vault back across and then deliver them at the market.
Everyone except Nicole & Victor choose High. Nicole has trouble with the pole and suggests they switch Detours. While the other teams retrieve their cow, Becca & Floyd are lost.
Colin & Christie and Tyler & Korey begin to hoist their cows up and they must do so in 40 seconds. Both get the thumbs up and run up the tower to be given their next clue. That clue directs teams to the “surprise” Double U-Turn.
Colin & Christie and Tyler & Korey decide not to U-Turn anyone and just let everyone else deal with it. Leo & Jamal decide to U-Turn Nicole & Victor on her birthday as payback for voting for them. Nicole & Victor decide to U-Turn Becca & Floyd.
Teams must now drive themselves to Smit Giethoorn. Here, teams must race by boat train to the next Pit Stop. Teams must find and pick up two marked boats to create a boat train and then steer it towards Bovenwijde Lake.
Becca & Floyd are able to deliver their eggs and cheese, but one of their eggs is cracked and cannot be accepted. They have to go all the way back. Nicole & Victor, meanwhile, struggle with hoisting their cow up.
While Tyler & Korey’s boat strikes a child in another boat, Colin & Christie move into the lead with Colin’s boating experience. They step on the Mat as Team #1 and win $7500 each!
Meanwhile, Tyler & Korey and Leo & Jamal have lots of troubles, especially with locals annoyed by their horrible driving skills. Leo & Jamal’s motor stops working and they enlist the help of a local to fix it.
Tyler & Korey check in as Team #2. Leo & Jamal are Team #3. Nicole & Victor step on the Mat in 4th. That means Becca & Floyd are last and eliminated.
This was an okay episode with a Leg that could’ve really been awesome if it had a Road Block. It felt a little barebones (which is typical of contemporary TAR) even if all the tasks the episode did have were great.
Not having an extra task or a Road Block made the episode focus too long on everything else.
For the Detour, the cow task was amusing, but I think could’ve been a little more involved. The task itself was really more about the physical aspect of riding their bikes the entire way. The other side of the Detour, which was a pseudo-Switchback of course, also really depended on the bike ride. As seen with Nicole and Becca & Floyd, the locals weren’t too strict with how teams vaulted across the ditch.
Then the only other task was the boat task of course, which was pretty awesome if only for having locals yelling at teams. Lol But it was a creative and fresh take on a familiar TAR task.
With the U-Turn, I always believe the Race shouldn’t warn the teams of one coming up. Teams getting surprised should be more dramatic.
Overall, a missed opportunity for what could’ve been the best episode of the season.
My Subjective Team Rankings
Colin & Christie all the way! They’re definitely peaking at just the right time and I still hope they make it all the way to the Finish Line dominating.
I’m actually sad Becca & Floyd were eliminated this Leg. This was the most likeable they’ve ever been I think! Lol I enjoyed seeing Becca drop the “Fun” façade and have some real, raw emotion at the Detour. And obviously with the other teams not being “rootable,” Becca & Floyd are my default #2. Too bad.
Leo & Jamal really have fallen forward this entire Race. It’s crazy. And Tyler & Korey and Nicole & Victor are equally horrible and annoying.
Local: “That’s the Dutch way!”
Becca: “I want to throw that in your face right now.”
Local : “Hey guys, are you idiots or something like that?”
