EP 09-01: HERE WE GO, BABY, OFF TO WIN A MILLION DOLLARS
Well, THE AMAZING RACE is back… and better than ever? I don’t know about that… yet.
As someone who actually enjoyed the Family Edition, I still had high hopes for TAR9 as it returns to its regular format. I never liked the 2-hour premieres, I thought they’ve always been too long which draws out all the action, so it’ll seem more boring than it actually is. But TAR9’s premiere actually was kinda, sorta boring… or at least uneventful.
It was pretty obvious from the beginning that the lagging teams would either be Fran & Barry, Lisa & Joni, or John & Scott. I wanted to love Fran & Barry and Lisa & Joni from the beginning, like I do with all the other “older teams” of the past. But no… they have to start out on a dumb and bad note… First, Fran & Barry completely miss the clue box. Honest mistake, but still, it was right there AND the cameraman was right there filming it as they walked past. Then they go and do the Motorhead DETOUR, which was obviously the harder of the two even on just quick glance at the choices. And Lisa & Joni… I thought their little scream in the preview was just a little moment of excitement, but they couldn’t stop screaming!! (“SON OF A BITCH!” “I JUST PEED MY PANTS” “SON OF A BITCH!” “AHHH!” “JESUS!”)
lol Hopefully these two teams can pick up their games.
Wanda & Desiree are definitely the next generation Nancy & Emily (TAR1)… They have their own personality and can definitely be a strong team if they don’t make a fatal mistake along the way. Team Mojo (aka Joseph & Monica) remind me more of TAR4’s Kelly & Jon than all-time best team Kris & Jon… They had a few bumps, but can definitely step up their game.
Eric & Jeremy are okay, but they are totally on TAR just to get to Hollywood. Otherwise, they seem like good guys. David & Lori are very kissy, and not as nerdy as they were made out to be. Yolanda seems cool, Ray… not so much. BJ & Tyler aren’t as annoying as I originally thought, and aren’t as hippy either. Danielle & Dani didn’t show that their looks aren’t their only assetts. John & Scott just suck as racers and Lake & Michelle are on the verge of becoming a new breed of Colin/Christie and Jonathan/Victoria. And what was with their first mistake? Umm, have you NOT seen TAR before? One thing that will always be a part of the premiere episode is the scramble to get on the first plane out of the starting line city and then rushing to the other airline when the first one has filled up.
Overall, mostly likable cast.
So, the show itself. One good thing is that they didn’t have the obligatory “find a Departure Time” for the next morning thing which was actually better. The DETOURs weren’t all that special. The helicopter ride was pretty cool though… A helicopter ride anywhere is pretty cool though. The motorcycle assembly had no where near the tension of the TAR3 Switzerland bicycle ROAD BLOCK.
Its nice to see TAR continuing to highlight local cultures with that religious ceremony.
Anyway, it seems early to see whether or not this will be a TAR3/TAR5 or TAR2/TAR4 season (good vs. boring)… hopefully it won’t be a TAR7 (downright crap).
