The Amazing Race 9 Wrap-up

THE AMAZING RACE, SEASON 9 WRAP-UP

I had no problems with the Family Edition, I really didn’t. In fact it was one of my favorite seasons.

Even though I enjoyed TAR8, I was still looking forward to getting back to the normal AMAZING RACE. Of course, that means traveling outside of North America. They probably went to some of the most beautiful destinations this season; Japan, Oman, Australia, Greece… all amazing places to visit.

This year’s teams have to be the best group ever (maybe after TAR3). There was not one team that you really, absolutely loved to hate… or just plain hate. There was also a lack of one fully rootable team. In a way, that could be a bad thing, but in another way, it could also be more exciting.

We barely knew John & ScottLisa & Joni were kinda annoying sometimes, but it would’ve been nice to see more of them. They were big TAR fans, so that’s points for them.

Dani & Danielle were by far one of the worst Racers ever. They left things behind, lost things… they freakin’ left their Race packs with all their clues, money, AND passports! Plus, they were pretty bad with directions, and didn’t much task-wise. Their claim to fame is their flirting with a certain team, but that’s basically it.

I wanted Wanda & Desiree to go far… They were Nancy & Emily v2.0 (TAR1). They had the makings of a strong team, but they showed that one mistake can end the Race. Lake & Michelle were, for some reason, being hyped as the next Colin/Christie or Jonathan/Victoria. But they weren’t at all. They were pretty tame compared to them, and it was pretty evident that they were a strong couple.

Dave & Lori defied early hype as well. They weren’t these huge nerd/geeks that was shown during the TAR10 previews. They were a nice, young couple that did better than anyone probably expected. BJ & Tyler… again, their shtick got old. Enough with the act! As Monica said, “TTOW my ass.” They were competent enough Racers, but they are surely not one of the best teams ever. Winning The Amazing Race by no means justifies yourself one of the best. A good team maybe, but one of the best… definitely not.

Eric & Jeremy were funny, while they got a little annoying after a couple of episodes of flirting with the “Double Ds,” once they focused on the Race, they proved to be one of the most consistently good teams ever. Finishing 1-2 every leg of the Race (except for one) is a pretty amazing feat. They barely made any mistakes, they were physically strong, made good decisions most of the time, and were able to have a good time (which is an important part of the Race). Ray & Yolanda were pretty much in the background for the first half of the season, and once they stepped out in front, they still didn’t really provide much. They’re a great couple, but there wasn’t really “a moment” that defined them.

Fran & Barry started off horribly, they plain sucked in the first few legs. Walking past clues, choosing the wrong Detours… they didn’t make themselves endearing at all. But they turned it on towards the middle of the Race, and showed hints of Teri & Ian and Meredith & Gretchen. Huge round of applause for their strength and endurance, especially for Fran after she overcame breast cancer to do so well in the Race.

And finally, the misunderstood team of TAR9, Monica & Joseph. I still don’t see what everyone hates in them. Yes, they had arguments, but they were clearly during the most frustrating parts of the Race. Regardless, they never got past one sentence of heated talk each. Afterwards, they would push forward. Monica never gave up once, so I don’t see the Flo comparison. She did an equal number of Road Blocks as Joseph, so she was just as strong as anyone else, if not more so.

Overall, TAR9 will be one of the better seasons. A very good cast, amazing locations, not a lot of drama (which is GOOD), and just an overall good season.

So up next, the milestone TENTH season of THE AMAZING RACE! A few years ago, most people probably would’ve never thought the show would reach a 10th season. Sundays at 8PM/7c should be good. September is so far away.

Recap: The Amazing Race 9, Episode 12 – “I’m going to bust my ass”

EP 09-12: 5 CONTINENTS… 10 COUNTRIES… AND MORE THAN 59 THOUSAND MILES!

Those damn hippies.

Japan looks like loads of fun full of craziness. What a crazy, hectic place that Shibuya was. I’ve always seen those Japanese scenes in “Power Rangers” so its a nice change to see people from THE AMAZING RACE instead. Those roller coaster rides were freakin’ crazy! Funny Japanese… they love fast things. And small things too… that capsule hotel was crazy insane! I don’t remember, but was it Tokyo where they had the high-rise cemeteries?

Another funny thing about Japan, random TAR-hired man wearing a yellow and red scarf. Still, Japan looks beautiful as well, especially the area around Mt. Fuji and the lake with big swans.

Finding that clue at the intersection must’ve been harder than it looked. It was nice to see teams completing tasks in the middle of the night for a change. Finally things are open after dark! How wierd must it have been for both the teams and the lady they were carrying, though it seemed cool still. The other DETOUR with the bike messenger thing was a great way to see the city, but you had to be careful riding around… look at Ray, he almost hit some guy on a bike.

The ROAD BLOCK would’ve sucked if they had to do it more than once. Luckily, I don’t think they made it hard at all. The guy with the sign was probably at the end of the ride as they slowed down.

So off to Alaska next… in every season, its either Alaska or Hawaii as the US port of entry. I’d love to go to Alaska, very beautiful and lots of history too.

The DETOUR wasn’t much of a Detour what with the weather grounding all the planes. For some reason, seeing the snow in the previews, I thought they were going to Finish in Alaska, but they returned to where they started… Denver, Colorado.

I like it when TAR does a truly around the world route starting and ending in the same city. The ROAD BLOCK… killer. It was a tough one, TAR8’s puzzle of North America was kinda like the flags tonight. I don’t remember, but I think it was TAR3 that we had this kind of ROAD BLOCK where the teams are required to remember details of the entire Race? No other season since then has had this? I mean, TAR6 and TAR7 had jumping into water while TAR5 had running through a maze.

Anyway… those damn hippies. The one team I didn’t want to win this season other than Lake & Michelle. BJ & Tyler just annoy the hell out of me. Simple as that… their Racing style wasn’t anything special, they weren’t consitent (execpt in coming in last at non-elim pit stops), and their trickery wasn’t villanous or funny, just annoying. One of my least favorite winners, probably the only ones worse than them are Freddy & Kendra. I liked all the other winners before.

Oh well… I was mixed about an Eric & Jeremy win. I like the guys, but I was worried about how they’d really spend the money… these aspring actor-model types. Still, they did seem like nice guys who liked to have fun, but knew when to take things seriously. They will go down as the most successful overall team in TAR history. 1-2 all the way except for one leg, pretty good I have to say, almost excellent.

Ray & Yolanda seemed like fun people too, but we didn’t get to see any of it… we barely saw them. They didn’t start drama, they didn’t really make any significant Race moments, but they were good people for the most part. I wouldn’t have minded them winning. But they had completely bad luck for both final legs.

So THE AMAZING RACE 9 has come to an end… it has been an interesting season both on and off screen. My TAR9 wrap-up Thursday or Friday.

So while we wait for the milestone THE AMAZING RACE 10 to premiere in the Fall on SUNDAYS AT 8PM, we will be watching our old tapes and DVDs of the classic TAR seasons (minus season 7, that season is just plain wrong).

Until September!

EP 09-11: I THINK THIS MONKEY LIKES ME

Bye Bye MoJo! This is the first time in AMAZING RACE history that I do not have one single favorite in the final 3.

More on MoJo later… to the episode… Again, another episode reminiscent of a past season. The sacred monkeys were definitely reminiscent of the sacred rats in India during season one. That ROAD BLOCK was probably harder than it looked, having to cut all of those vegetables and fruits and then setting it up all while the monkeys are attacking you, that would be tough. And those monkeys, not only attacking the Racers, but the cluebox as well? I didn’t know those clueboxes were so flexible, I thought they would’ve just fell over.

At least both the DETOUR and ROAD BLOCK showed off some of the Thai culture. The DETOUR should have favored Monica & Joseph, but as seen in their Early Show and Finish Line interviews, they were only minutes behind Ray & Yolanda. The taxicab was what did them in, which is easy to believe.

Eric & Jeremy were more serious again last night, which is good. They probably have the best odds at winning the whole thing. As for them winning, I don’t know if I want to give these aspiring actors/celebrities the million dollars. But in terms of racing, they’ve done extremely well. Ray & Yolanda, I thought would get better, but they still haven’t contributed much to the Race overall. So I don’t think they’re exactly deserving per se, but who knows. And BJ & Tyler, 100 “TTOWs” too many (or “TThai” if they’re in Thailand). Their little mindgame they played last week was definitely mean-spirited, and I thought they were supposed to be carefree guys… hippies… I would probably be as upset if they won as I was when Freddy and Kendra won in TAR6.

*start MoJo gushing*
Monica & Joseph, my favorite team from day 1… I don’t get all the hate towards them. Monica was by no means Flo v2.0. She never gave up, she pushed forward and completed all the tasks she faced. Joseph and Monica are by no means the volatile couple everyone makes them out to be. They have their little bits of frustration and that’s it. They calm each other down, and I definitely think they will be very happy together… They ran a good Race, but were just plagued by mistakes last night. Still congratulations to them, they did well…
*end of MoJo gushing*

So the two-hour finale is next week! Hopefully those wonderful, dedicated TAR fans tune back in… we don’t want CBS getting rid of TAR now do we?

Recap: The Amazing Race 9, Episode 10 – “Those bitches called and cancelled our taxis.”

EP 09-10: MAN, THEY SHOULD HAVE USED THEIR FAKE NAMES

That was a great episode. Everything from the little conversations the teams were having with each other to the photo finish to Phil almost getting hit with the whips or whatever those things were.

It was nice to see the teams interacting, even though it was hostile at times. The canceling of cabs, the confrontation at the airport, waiting in the middle of the night… I enjoyed those first 15 minutes.

The ROAD BLOCK was another TAR standard… skydiving. The DETOUR, however, was much better. The WET DETOUR probably would’ve much more fun if it wasn’t for the stress of the Race. Getting to wade through an Australian jungle would be so cool! 🙂 And of course, in the DRY DETOUR, getting to play the didgeridoo with an Aboriginal would so much fun.

Both DETOURS definitely showed off a great side of Australia.

I didn’t mind Eric & Jeremy‘s cab canceling… I don’t know why. I despised Romber for their tactics, but I somehow can’t hate E&J. Maybe its because it was against BJ & Tyler who are continuing to be annoying non-stop. Causing a rift between Monica & Joseph based on their relationship might be going a little too far and personal. Of course, MoJo are a pretty strong couple, as we saw last night. Through all of it, they had their little disagreements but in the end they were nothing.

The scene at the YIELD where MoJo doesn’t realize it was over was hilarious. I love the TAR cameramen/women… they are the best.

That finish was probably the closest finish I can remember. Not TWO, but THREE teams arriving practically side-by-side with that literal Photo Finish slow-mo being used twice. Usually, close finishes have a team lagging behind towards the end of the footrace, but all three teams ran their hearts out to the mat as if this was the Finish Line. What a finale that would be if it turned out that close??

The non-elim wasn’t a surprise though… Good to see BJ & Tyler having to scour for money again. I wonder who’ll give BJ (or is it Tyler) shoes?

Random Guy: “Cheap place to stay, love? You can stay at my joint for free!”
*Joseph walks in*
Random Guy: “No I’m just joking… well I wasn’t, until I saw you”

Eric: “Ray and Yolanda are hanging out by themselves as usual. Ray’s got a short leash.”

Joseph: “Yeah, she doesn’t keep me on a short leash.”
Eric: “I don’t let Jeremy out of the house.”

Recap: The Amazing Race 9, Episode 9 – “If there were chicks, we’d be hooking up with them.”

EP 09-09: DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH RUNNING I DID TODAY, PHIL?

Well, they definitely didn’t spend a lot of time in Oman did they? The King-caused traffic jam in Muscat is so reminiscent of TAR6 when the teams get caught up in a motorcade for (as Jonathan put it) the President of “Synagogue” …

Australia was beautiful, and what a way to see it… on a two-person bicycle. We finally get some kind of diving tasks as seen in every season of TAR. The DETOUR was simple enough, but nothing new or special. The Duracell®-sponsored ROAD BLOCK could’ve been more exciting. Maybe if they said the prison was haunted or something, had some ghostly apparitions or have them walk around the prison without any lights or stuff like that. Still, the underground tunnels were not as dangerous as the African tunnels that cut Meredith’s head open in TAR7.

Eric & Jeremy luckily manage to get 1st place again as they outrun Monica & Joseph. Once again, and not unexpectedly, MoJo’s breakdown/argument wasn’t a big deal at all. Monica proved at the Detour that she is nowhere near being Flo-like. Flo probably wouldn’t have dived at all, plus she would’ve freaked out after getting only one of those crayfish or whatever they were. 🙂 Anyway, first close finish this season…

Hmm… Ray & Yolanda aren’t what they seem to be, according to the videos at CBS.com. They’re harmless, but is there more that what we’re seeing on TV? They may be this season’s David & Jeff. BJ & Tyler… what to say? I don’t like them, I don’t hate them. They annoy me though. And I wouldn’t want them to win.

In a way, I was expecting it to be a non-elimination since Fran & Barry were last… early hype had them being Meredith & Gretchen 2.0. Oh well… they weren’t the “nice, old couple” that’s for sure. They kind of picked up the pace in the middle of the Race, but just couldn’t hold on long enough. They definitely recovered from their disastrous first few legs though. I guess the taxi

Not as exciting an episode as last week, but good enough. Any TAR episode is good enough really…

Monica: “What’s that stench? Oh, I think its just Eric and Jeremy passing by. Stinky boys… stinky”

Eric/Jeremy: “I got bottom”
