The Amazing Race 21 Season Wrap-up

The Amazing Race 21 Wrap-Up

*sigh*

So The Amazing Race 21 was an alright season.  Nothing too memorable, save for the final Road Block.  But also not horrible.

I think the biggest thing to take away from TAR21 is that the show is definitely due for a sprucing up.  I hope a freshly remixed theme, new graphics, and some better challenges are in store for us at least in the next two seasons.

The Route
It was an okay Route.  Nothing that really stands out, except maybe Frankfurt being the death of teams.

I guess after 21 seasons, TAR will be returning to a lot more locations they’ve visited previously.  There’s only so many countries left and with the world continuing to be unstable and unsafe for Americans to run through, I’m sure the options are limited.

The Tasks
We did have some surprisingly physical tasks this season which are great since TAR’s been oversimplifying everything from Leg design to types of challenges for years now.

The tasks in Indonesia and Bangladesh like the carrying of ice, fish and bamboo or assembling that big scale were good to challenge the teams especially in those countries that were congested and stereotypically “third world.”

The Turkish bath was gratuitous team skin and the Russian time zone Road Block was a great mental challenge

The Twists
Just two new twists this season.  First, the Blind Double U-Turn which was the logical next step for it of course.  Also good to have it when there are more teams to incite paranoia and drama.  Having a regular Double U-Turn with less teams is makes more sense too since you’d probably be able to figure it out anyway.

It’s also about time someone figured out to use the U-Turn to their advantage like how the “Dream Team” did here.  I wonder if that will necessitate a tweak to the rules in reaction kind of like Big Brother instituting that “6 houseguests only” rule after the Five Finger/Backdoor Plan, I think in season 5.  But the U-Turn strategy they came up with here was very smart.

And second, the Double Your Money prize.  Spoiler alert, Phil says it will not return for TAR22.  And I don’t really think it made a difference in terms of competition.  If anything, the threat of another million dollars TAR needed to shell out limited possible locations or tasks.  TAR could use that million for something else like better challenges or to pay for those plane tickets to fresh and different locations.

The Teams
The teams were okay.  It was a solid group.  Even the early boots like Amy & Daniel and Gary & Will made an impression in their short times.

You also had strong personalities in Natalie & Nadiya and Jaymes & James who were pretty much locks for any All-Star season.  You had real underdogs in James & Abba and a likeable, yet strong couple in Trey & Lexi.

There weren’t any villains (despite what some casual fans might believe) or big fueds so there were no angry outbursts like we had in TAR20.

That said, a season like this where teams all helped each other out and even made pacts to get eliminated together kind of made me miss all that fighting and drama TAR20 delivered.

The Ending
As okay as the season was, the finale was very exciting.  And I believe that had to do with the teams being able to Race neck and neck in both final Legs.

They were actually very linear Legs.  But the tasks were balanced enough and teams good enough to keep everyone within striking distance which made it all the more exciting.

The Final Road Block was definitely an inspired task.  While it may not come close to TAR12’s tragic, but genius final Road Block, this one was right up there with the TAR17 Pit Stop Greeter Hats, the field of clueboxes from TAR13 and the epic surfboards of TAR14.  And let’s not forget the very first memory Final Task, the totem pole Road Block of TAR3.  So ahead of its time.

But it was definitely a downer, almost like TAR12, when a horrible team ends up winning.  More on that below.

My Final Subjective Team Rankings

Natalie & Nadiya Natalie & Nadiya – They started out as fun sisters who might not have the Race skills, but entertained.  That was definitely the wrong first impression.  Yes, they were fun and entertaining, but they turned out to be great Racers.  Strong competitors who were here to play.  They won Legs, they did well with challenges, they schemed and stole, but they were here to Race.  That gets much more respect by me than teams with defeatist attitudes who would rather quit then go forward.  I’m sure we’ll be seeing them on the Race in the future.
Trey & Alexis Trey & Lexi – They started out okay, but ended up becoming strong and consistent Racers.  They too were competitors who were here to Race.  They stepped on toes and did it with a smile.  But most importantly, they did well despite their inexperience even outside of Texas.  It’s a shame it all came down to that final Road Block because they had run two almost flawless Legs at the end.  It was also great to see a nice couple for once in a long time.
Jaymes & James Jaymes & James – They definitely started out slow in the beginning.  Their fit bodies being no match for the Race.  But halfway through, they began to step it up and definitely worked to get to that final Leg.  They were also good, laid back, fun guys who were genuinely nice but also pushed themselves to Race well.  Their personalities matched what would become their Racing skills which is always good to watch.
James & Mark James & Abba – You want real underdogs?  James & Abba are that team.  Even though they actually won two Legs thanks to a Fast Forward and a horribly linear next leg, they were consistent, good Racers who were dealt with some bad hands.  But they were able to push through them, even if they ended up eliminated anyway.  But to see true underdog fighting spirit, just watch James & Abba’s final two Legs.  Now there’s real underdogs you can root for.
Amy & Daniel Amy & Daniel – Maybe the most surprising and disappointing elimination.  They seemed like they could go all the way.  Two strong, competitive people who ended up being done in by a bad taxi.  Definitely a shame.
Caitlin & Brittany Caitlin & Brittany – They actually had an okay Race and had it not been for their horrible rickshaw driver (a common theme this season) they could have made it a lot farther.  They were pretty good and could have gotten even better if they survived.  It’s too bad they had to get struck with bad taxi or in this case, rickshaw luck.
Gary & Will Gary & Will – While it is always great to see real TAR fans running the Race, Gary & Will were definitely slogging along the entire time.  For TAR fans, they did not use their TAR knowledge to their advantage, often making the mistakes that they should have known to avoid.  They were lucky to have lasted as long as they did, but they still made a strong impression.  One of a completely overmatched team that was still amusing to watch fumble their way through.
Rob & Shiela Rob & Shiela – Not much of an impression in their short time on the Race, but they were definitely *thisclose* to making it to Leg 2.  It would’ve been interesting to see if they could have done well on the Race.
Rob & Kelley Rob & Kelley – Definitely not one of my favorite teams.  They were cocky and arrogant and Raced horribly.  Instead of bad taxi luck, it was their own decision that got them eliminated.
Abbie & Ryan Abbie & Ryan – They started out pretty well considering they had that chance to double their money.  But they soon became cocky with their Racing skills not matching their confidence. Then came that idiotic decision to stick together with Josh & Brent to walk together to their eliminations.  What?  They probably would’ve made Final 4 if they had actually hustled and Raced instead of lollygagging through that last Leg of theirs.  But worst part of it all, Ryan’s post-TAR Twitter rant basically calling TAR fake, rigged and scripted.  Way to endear yourself.
Josh & Brent Josh & Brent – Where to begin.  They wouldn’t be as horrible if they hadn’t won.  But because of how poorly they Raced and how many times they were able to luck out and escape elimination from lost passports to non-elimination legs to the U-Turn of a team that had given up.  That’s not including their own defeatist and quitter attitude (they actually did quit once!) that has no place on the Race.  I have no respect for teams that take the Race so lightly as to just give up when there are so many other people who would love and appreciate the opportunity to compete.  The fact that they fell into the finale and then ended up winning doesn’t make them underdogs.  Far from it.  They sucked as Racers and their poor showings were their own fault.  You want real underdogs, look at James & Abba.  Plus this whole “nice guy” notion when they were actually in line with the stereotypical TAR bickering couple types is absurd.  My least favorite winners like TK & Rachel or Eric & Danielle were because they were horrible people on the Race.  Josh & Brent weren’t horrible people on the Race, but they were horrible Racers and so underserving.

Recap: The Amazing Race 21, Episode 11 (and 12) – Season Finale – Take Down That Million

The 11th Leg

The penultimate leg begins as teams fly first to Barcelona to catch a train to the Loire Valley in France.  On the train ride, the “Dream Team” solidify their alliance while Josh & Brent take the hint that they are on the outside.

After the overnight ride, teams arrive in France and open the next clue on the windshields of shiny new Ford Escapes.  Teams must collect crates from a nearby café and load them into their Escapes using the fancy kick open feature, the handsfree liftgate.  Then, they must drive themselves to the Chateau de Villandry where they must find the Stone Dog.

Josh & Brent decide to just follow the Dream Team who’ve gotten directions.  Along the way, the Twinnies yell to the teams in front that they must lose the Beekmans along the way.

They get to the first castle and find the stone dog and the next clue.  Teams must find Da Vinci’s final resting place, the Chateau d’Amboise.  Meanwhile, Natalie & Nadiya find the Speed Bump.

For their Speed Bump, they must head into the castle and help a woman tie up her corset.

While the other three teams leave, the Twinnies tell the other Dream Team members to lose the Beekmans, saying they’re using them and faking injuries.  Josh & Brent respond by calling them “bitches” and telling them to have fun with the Speed Bump.

Natalie & Nadiya quickly finish the Speed Bump while Jaymes & James and Trey & Lexi put their trust in Josh & Brent’s navigating skills and knowledge of French.

The three teams get to Amboise and find the Detour.

For both Detours, teams must drive to Château de Cheverny.
In Chow, teams must prepare a meal for hunting dogs by cleaning and cutting up pieces of meat, weighing out the correct amount and laying it out on the ground to receive their next clue.
In Plow, teams must use a horse and plow to till four rows of a designated field

The Beekmans want to work with Trey & Lexi and they both choose Chow, but Texas decides to go ahead and switch to Plow.  Jaymes & James and Josh & Brent get lost, allowing Natalie & Nadiya to actually arrive at the castle 2nd.

The Chippies head over to Plow while Twinnies and Beekmans head over to Chow where they exchange playful jabs.

Trey & Lexi and Jaymes & James finish their side of the Detour and head to the next Route Marker at Caves de Roches where they find the Road Block.

For this Road Block, teams will have to memorize three different types of mushrooms they must collect in an underground farm.  Once they’ve collected 10 each, they’ll find their way out of the caves and if correct, will receive the next clue.

Lexi heads into the caves first with Jaymes right behind.

Meanwhile, The Beekmans finish feeding the dogs and leave The Twinnies behind.  But Josh & Brent are unsure of where to go.

At the Road Block, Jaymes emerges from the caves first, but has the wrong mushrooms.  On the other hand, Lexi’s mushrooms are correct and they get the next clue telling them to go to the Castle of the Ladies or the Chateau de Chenonceau and the Pit Stop.

Trey & Lexi leave first, but are pointed to the wrong castle.  That lets Jaymes & James, who get the correct info, arrive at the Pit Stop first to claim their win and a pair of brand new Ford Escapes.  Trey & Lexi settle for 2nd.

At the Road Block, Natalie & Nadiya arrive just before Josh & Brent and Natalie manages to get the clue first.  The Beekmans are still right behind.  The Twinnies ask a woman where “Castle of the Ladies” is and she tells them the absolute wrong answer causing them to go the wrong direction.

That’s what Josh & Brent need as they get the correct directions and arrive at the Mat in 3rd, leaving Natalie & Nadiya last and eliminated.

The Final Leg

The final leg begins as teams hop on a plane to their final destination, New York.  They are given a post card with the message “Wish you were here” and teams must figure out that they are being pointed to Coney Island.

Jaymes & James and Trey & Lexi are first at the boardwalk of Coney Island but cannot see the hidden clue on a Houdini poster right in the spot that’s drawn on their postcard.  The Beekmans soon join them wandering around.

But it’s Lexi that sees the poster first telling teams to “Race to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.”  She and Trey want to write it down, but Josh & Brent have seen them and then spot the clue as well.  They both run off, leaving Jaymes & James behind.

At the shipyard, they find the Road Block.

For this Road Block, teams must escape Houdini-style.  Getting tied up in a straightjacket and hung upside down from a crane, they must untie themselves and remove the jacket before doing a surprise freefall to receive their next clue.

Trey goes up first and quickly manages to escape his straightjacket before Brent and Jaymes can even get hoisted up.  They open up the next clue telling them to find America’s first pizzeria which is Lombardi’s.

Trey & Lexi maintain their lead and get the next clue.  Teams must deliver 10 pizzas to three different addresses by memorizing all the information and then returning to the pizzeria to get the next clue.

Josh & Brent are right behind them.  But while Trey & Lexi deliver their pizzas to the correct customers, Josh & Brent mix up two.  They must redeliver pizzas as Jaymes & James finally arrive.

Trey & Lexi are on their way to the next Route Marker, the United Nations, which they had to figure out from just the UN emblem.  Josh & Brent correctly deliver their pizzas on the 2nd attempt with Jaymes & James right behind.

Trey & Lexi arrive at the United Nations where they find the final Road Block.

For this Road Block, teams must take the local greetings for “Hello” and “Goodbye” said by each Pit Stop greeter and match them with the flags from each of the countries they visited on the Race.

Lexi gets started with Spain and France as Josh & Brent arrive and Jaymes & James bringing up the rear.  All three teams are at the UN with Lexi, Josh and James struggling with the greetings.

Two and a half hours later and darkness is falling, the teams are now using process of elimination to figure out the ones they don’t know.  And it’s Josh that finishes first.  He raises the United Nations flag to retrieve the final clue telling teams to head to the Finish Line at Gotham Hall.

James gets the green light and he and Jaymes hurry off.  Both teams are in their respective taxis, but it’s Josh & Brent who arrive at the Finish Line first and claim the million dollars.

Jaymes & James officially finish 2nd with Trey & Lexi 3rd.

Episode Thoughts
Well that was definitely a packed two-hours.  And definitely one of the more exciting finales TAR has had thanks to the teams in both Legs being neck and neck the entire time.

For the France Leg, I take offense to that horribly watered down version of the classic TAR5 Detour choice also called “Plow” in the Philippines.  They could have done a different Detour, especially if Plow is going to be a Switchback for TAR’s return to the Philippines in TAR23, yes? ;)

For this Final Leg, the clue at Coney Island was inspired.  The first Road Block was fun and the pizza delivery was alright.

But the Final Task had to be one of the better final memory tasks.  Though not as epic as TAR12’s tragic, but genius final Road Block, this Road Block which most fans called from the beginning was a nice new take on the country/flag task.  TAR definitely needs to have a memory task in the Final Leg for every Race and not every other (which they seem to do).

I definitely liked that it took more than two and a half hours for them to complete.  Which then helped to have the Finish Line after dark for the first time since season 1 I believe.  Also different to have had the Finish Line indoors.

But while it was an exciting finale, it reminded me of TAR12.  It was also a great finale (and great season), but had a horrible ending.  Definitely not happy with the Josh & Brent win.

Trey & Alexis Trey & Lexi – They had two very strong Legs.  But it was that Final Road Block that cost them that million.  Bad directions from locals also cost them brand new Ford Escapes.  But they had an otherwise strong finish and did very well until that stumble at the final task.  I like Lexi’s We need to Race for ourselves attitude I France.  There is no reason you have to stay with another team if you don’t have to.
Jaymes & James Jaymes & James – Jaymes & James may have stepped it up as the Race went along and in the penultimate Leg, they definitely kept a consistent pace that allowed them to pass Trey & Lexi at the right moment.  But in the Final Leg, they kind of reverted back to their early Race performances.  Simple mistakes and lack of energy definitely did not help them in the Final Leg.
Natalie & Nadiya Natalie & Nadiya – It sucks that they had lost a chance at the million because some misinformed local gave them the wrong directions.  They did amazing in the penultimate Leg being able to catch up and even pass some of the other teams, especially Josh & Brent, despite having that Speed Bump.  They definitely had a legitimate shot, but that one wrong direction did it for them.
Josh & Brent Josh & Brent – Like they’ve done all Race, they fell forward into the Final Leg.  And they end up winning not because Josh was more observant with Pit Stop Greeters, but because he was faster with the process of elimination.  *sigh* A more in-depth look at why they are horrible winners in my season Wrap-up.

The Leg

TAR2110 TAR2110 TAR2110

Teams must fly to Barcelona where they will hop on a ferry to the island of Mallorca.  Natalie & Nadiya, Jaymes & James and Trey & Lexi get there on separate flights, but catch up to each other as the ferry to Mallorca doesn’t leave until 11pm.

So they decide to head out for some fun at the beach.  When they head back to the train station, they meet Josh & Brent for the first time in a couple of legs.

The next morning, the teams arrive on Mallorca.  Josh & Brent hop into a taxi first, but get lost allowing the others teams to arrive at Palma Cathedral.  They must search amongst a group of performing demons for one who will hand them their next clue.

TAR2110 TAR2110 TAR2110

They find the clue–carrying demon and open the clue telling them to drive themselves to Centro de Alto Rendimiento.  They want to stick together, but Nadiya struggles with driving stick and they get left behind.

Jaymes & James and Trey & Lexi arrive at Centro de Alto Rendimiento and find the Road Block.

For this Road Block, teams choose a basket of tennis balls to be loaded into an automatic server machine.  They must then return 20 balls in-bounds before the machine runs out of balls.

TAR2110 TAR2110 TAR2110

Trey, who plays tennis, quickly finishes while James has a little trouble keeping up with the balls.  He gets it on his 2nd attempt and they leave just as Josh & Brent arrive.

Josh struggles with his sprained ankle from last leg and tries a second time before the Twinnies arrive.  Nadiya gets started while Josh rests, but she doesn’t “move [her] ass” like Natalie suggests and has to go a 2nd time.  Josh finally pushes through on his 3rd attempt and as they are leaving, Nadiya manages to get her 20th ball.

Meanwhile, Jaymes & James manage to catch up to Trey & Lexi as they arrive at the Route Marker at the Coves de Campanet.  They enter the caves where they must follow the music to the next clue.

TAR2110 TAR2110 TAR2110

They start hearing music and find two men playing guitar with clues behind them.

They rip it open to find the Detour.
In Spin It, teams must repair a 400-year old windmill by reattaching two blades.
In Bull It, teams dress up as a bull and must butt the capes of eight matadors before correctly hitting a target, launching a final dummy matador into the air.

TAR2110 TAR2110 TAR2110

They both decide to do the bulls, but Jaymes & James make a wrong turn and end up at the windmills so they decide on that Detour instead.  At the arena, Trey & Lexi find the front half of the bull can’t see, so the one in the back must guide.  Lexi wants to stay in the front, so Trey directs her through the matadors and they get to the target, but Lexi runs right at it and knocks it over.

They must do it again, but Lexi’s cut her finger from the impact.  Jaymes & James finish the windmills and get their clue from Don Quixote and Sancho Panza directing them to the Pit Stop at Castell de Bellver.

TAR2110 TAR2110 TAR2110

Lexi wants to switch, so Trey gets in the front of the bull and they finish the course with 45 seconds left to spare.  They head to the Pit Stop and manage to arrive before the Chippies to claim 1st and win a trip to the Riviera Maya.  Jaymes & James officially check-in 2nd.

Natalie & Nadiya catch up to Josh & Brent who choose to do the windmill Detour.  But the Beekmans keep their small lead over the Twinnies and step on the Mat in 3rd.  Natalie & Nadiya finish last, but it is a non-elimination leg.

Episode Thoughts
It was actually a good episode.  It was nice to see teams actually racing neck and neck.  And Mallorca looked beautiful in HD.

The “Dream Team” having fun in the sun reminded me of all the way back in TAR6.  Kris & Jon (most prominently) and the other teams swam in the waters of Synagogue Senegal with the locals.  Of course, Mallorca is a far cry from Senegal, but we haven’t seen the teams relaxing in years.  Especially with no more “eat, drink and mingle with the other teams” Pit Stops.

The Road Block seemed lame in the preview last week, but it was actually not that bad.  The Detour was good too.  The bull costume was fun and the windmills gave an opportunity for beautiful scenery.  The Route Markers at the church with the demons and the guitar playing in the cave were good, creative extras.

Also very surprised to have realized this was the first time they had to self-drive.  Very interesting.

Overall, a very solid episode.

Trey & Alexis Trey & Lexi – They’ve definitely done very well and are stepping it up week after week.  This week, they had to actually do things on their own without the help of the Twinnies or Chippies and they still managed to win the Leg.  That’s good moving forward and they’ve got plenty of momentum.
Jaymes & James Jaymes & James – A good Leg for them.  They didn’t let a wrong turn slow them down as they pushed through with the Detour they stumbled upon and still did very well.  They definitely have the motivation and they too have stepped up their game after a slow start.
Natalie & Nadiya Natalie & Nadiya – The driving definitely did them in.  Or at least almost did them in as they’re still in the Race.  They’re going to need to tighten that part of their Race up as they are an otherwise strong team.  They can’t lose to Josh & Brent now.
Josh & Brent Josh & Brent – The first solid Leg for them since the first few.  They finally get their act together, but definitely not a perfect Leg.  Also, that doesn’t mean I want to see them fall forward into the final Leg.  They remind me of Dandrew.  They’ve just been saved by too many circumstances that I can’t root for them.
Quotes from Episode 21.10

Jaymes: “Searching for Lucifer at 7 o’clock in the morning, I don’t know how I feel about that.”

Natalie: “How do they have a bloody map of this place?”
Nadiya: “I know, they’re super prepared, they’re gay!”

The Leg

TAR2109  TAR2109  TAR2109

Jaymes & James open the first clue of the Leg and find the flag of the country they are flying to next.  Teams must figure out it’s the flag for The Netherlands and they must fly to its capital Amsterdam.

Trey & Lexi ask the doorman of the hotel who tells them France while Natalie & Nadiya think its France as well.

Trey & Lexi run into Jaymes & James who clue them in and they head to a ticket counter, but there aren’t enough seats for both teams on the flight.  Trey & Lexi go to another airline.  Natalie & Nadiya meanwhile find an early flight, but the agents don’t want to sell them tickets on a one-hour connection.  The Twinnies eventually persuade them.

TAR2109  TAR2109  TAR2109

Next morning (!) Abbie & Ryan set off from the Pit Stop.  The first three teams agree on a plan in case there’s a U-Turn ahead.  The first team to arrive at the U-Turn must choose Abbie & Ryan and the next team that gets to the U-Turn will U-Turn whoever U-Turned Abbie & Ryan so Abbie & Ryan can’t U-Turn anyone else.  Pretty simple.

The teams each hop on different flights to Amsterdam.  Natalie & Nadiya fly through Rome getting them in at 11:30am.  Jaymes & James have a direct flight arriving at 12:15pm.  Trey & Lexi fly through Larnaca and arrive in Amsterdam at 1:05pm.  And Abbie & Ryan are returning to Frankfurt where they’ve booked two connecting flights arriving at 12:45pm or 2:05pm.  Josh & Brent take a flight through Oslo arriving in Amsterdam at 4:35pm.

TAR2109  TAR2109  TAR2109

Natalie & Nadiya arrive in Amsterdam and teams must take the train to Central Station to find their next clue.  The Twinnies open it up and find the Fast Forward.  To attempt the Fast Forward they must head to the Van Gogh Café and board a nearby bus.

As the Chippies arrive in Amsterdam, Abbie & Ryan experience déjà vu in Frankfurt.  They aren’t let on their first connecting flight and must take the other one, which then has technical trouble, so they have to board another plane.

Meanwhile, Natalie & Nadiya realize the bus is going into the water.  To win the Fast Forward, they must eat five raw herring each in 7 minutes, before the Floating Dutchman amphibious bus returns to solid ground.  If they fail to eat it all, the bus returns to the café and they’ll have to wait another 10 minutes before heading out.

TAR2109  TAR2109  TAR2109

They manage to finish and receive the clue telling them to head to the Pit Stop, the house of Rembrandt’s mistress in Ransdorp.  Jaymes & James decide to go for the Fast Forward but run into the twins when they leave the bus, so they head to the next Route Marker.

Teams must hop on a boat on the Amstel river and look for a floating poffertjes stand near the Magere Brug.  Jaymes & James find the poffertjes boat and are handed some nice treats and the next clue and the Detour.

Teams have to travel on foot for both Detours.
In Back in Time, teams must recreate Rembrandt’s The Night Watch using real people in costume.
In Organ to Grind, teams must play an organ grinder while trying to earn €30 in trips.

TAR2109  TAR2109  TAR2109

Jaymes & James choose Organ and when tips start drying up, they take their shirts off and bring in more people with a grandmother and her grandkids giving €10 to bring them to €30.

Natalie & Nadiya arrive at the Mat where they officially check-in first and win $5000 each.

Meanwhile, at the airport, Abbie & Ryan and Josh & Brent arrive at the same time and again make a pact to stick together and Race side by side this Leg.

Jaymes & James arrive at the next Route Marker, the Museum Geelvinck where they find the U-Turn.  They struggle with their decision, but ultimately keep their promise to the other two and U-Turn Abbie & Ryan.

TAR2109  TAR2109  TAR2109

They hop on a bus to the next Route Marker at a field in the town of Ransdorp where they find the Road Block.

In this Road Block, teams will Switchback to a TAR12 task where they have to pole vault over a ditch to retrieve their clue on the other side before pole vaulting back.

James easily does the task, retrieving the wooden shoes with the Pit Stop location.  He and Jaymes head to the Mat where they officially check-in 2nd.

Trey & Lexi finish the Detour and head to the Museum where they step in front of the U-Turn board and are happy to see Abbie & Ryan’s faces.  They U-Turn Jaymes & James, according to their plan and head off to Ransdorp.  Trey quickly does the Road Block and they head to the Pit Stop to finish as Team #3.

TAR2109  TAR2109  TAR2109

Back in Amsterdam, Abbie & Ryan and Josh & Brent are still sticking together and decide to do the Rembrandt Detour.  Again, they stay together and head to the museum where Abbie & Ryan are shocked to see who U-Turned them.

Josh & Brent say if it wasn’t for Trey & Lexi U-Turning Jaymes & James, they would’ve wanted Abbie & Ryan to U-Turn them so they can continue Racing together.  Instead Abbie & Ryan head off, but Brent still proposes that he and Josh wait for their friends or help them out.

But they decide it’s time to finally Race.  Since it’s after 6pm, they can take a taxi to Ransdorp instead of a bus.

Abbie & Ryan start the Organ Detour and have €24 when a kind woman gives them €6 after she dances with Abbie.  An emotional Abbie and Ryan thank her.

But as Abbie & Ryan wonder why Jaymes & James would stab them in the back, Josh & Brent get through the Road Block and head to the Pit Stop where Phil tells them they are Team #4.  Phil senses they are disappointed.

TAR2109  TAR2109  TAR2109

Phil: “Would you like me to eliminate you and leave Abbie & Ryan in the Race?”

They say no and that they’ll go hard from now on.

That leaves Abbie & Ryan solemnly doing the Road Block and stepping on the Mat where Phil tells them they are eliminated.

Episode Thoughts
I don’t remember a Final 5 leg that had the teams so spread out from one another.  I’ve also never seen five teams all taking five different flights to the next destination either.

First, look at those Departure Times!  Abbie & Ryan and Josh & Brent were pretty much 12 hours behind the first three teams.  In a way, you could understand them wanting to give up, but then again, their decision to Race together to the end just didn’t benefit anyone.  If Abbie & Ryan had just sped up and left Josh & Brent behind, they could’ve survived the U-Turn.

On to the tasks.  The Fast Forward was pretty cool!  I’d love to hop on an amphibious bus.  The Detour was alright.  The organ side of the Detour was great for having teams interacting with locals.  The painting side of the Detour though was kind of boring though.

And the Road Block.  Now the Road Block was fun in TAR12, but really only memorable for Don stripping to his underwear.  And it definitely isn’t “infamous” like the descriptions said it was from even before the season started.  I like the idea of Switchbacks.  They might not produce the same amazing results the original tasks did, but I like them more for nostalgia really.  This Switchback fell flat since the teams did it easily with no drama or fun.

An okay episode overall.

Trey & Alexis Trey & Lexi – An okay Leg for them.   Their trouble with booking flights and knowing where things are is kind of a concern moving forward.  But hopefully it won’t hurt them.  They’re definitely benefiting from their alliance with the Twinnies, but they’re also doing enough on their own to stay strong in the Race as well.
Jaymes & James Jaymes & James – Also an okay Leg for them.  Now that their motivation for winning the money has been properly established, they’re looking more and more like our winners.  We’ll see if that ends up being true, but they definitely have stepped it up.
Natalie & Nadiya Natalie & Nadiya – They’re proving to be great Racers.  Being in a position to take the Fast Forward is in line with how they’ve been consistent this Race.  Also coming up with that U-Turn plan was very clever and a wonder why no one else has come up with it since the Double U-Turn was introduced.  Barring some huge mistake, they should be a final 3 lock.
Abbie & Ryan Abbie & Ryan – They did themselves in.  Even with the back plane luck, they could have easily beat Josh & Brent to the Pit Stop had they not made another ridiculous pact to stick together with them and stopped moping around.  They are supposedly very competitive, yet they gave up three legs ago.
Josh & Brent Josh & Brent – I loved Phil asking them if they would rather be eliminated.  Their negative, downer attitudes have not been good to watch.  If they really wanted to go to the end, they would’ve stopped being negative the last three legs and instead pushed themselves even more to stay in it.
Quotes from Episode 21.09

Ryan: “I hate Frankfurt.  I hate Frankfurters.  I hate Frankenstein.”
Abbie: “Quite frankly, we got Frank’d.”

The Leg

TAR2108 TAR2108 TAR2108

While James & Abba get started trying to track down their passports, Josh & Brent are still struggling at the Detour.  The coach eventually gives them one last shot before the pool closes, but they fail and are given their clue, but also will receive a 4-hour penalty.

At the Road Block, Josh helps Abbie as the two teams stick together all the way to the Pit Stop.  Abbie & Ryan and Josh & Brent step on the Mat together and Phil informs them that there’s another team still out on the course meaning they are Teams 4 and 5 respectively.  The 4-hour penalty for  Josh & Brent will be enforced at the start of the next leg.

TAR2108 TAR2108 TAR2108

James & Abba return to the Mat and Phil tells them Leg 7 is a non-elimination Leg and they are still in the Race.  However, they still need to produce a passport.

The 8th Leg starts the next day and Trey & Lexi leave the Pit Stop first.  Teams must head to Study Building #6 at Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy where they’ll find the next clue in Large Chemistry Auditorium No. 1.

Trey & Lexi’s first taxi driver drops them off at a seedy underground tunnel before finding another taxi with a dapper, cigarette-smoking old man.  That allow Jaymes & James to arrive at the university first, but HOURS OF OPERATION have them wait for 8am.

TAR2108 TAR2108 TAR2108

Trey & Lexi’s dapper driver takes them to an abandoned building and they get splashed by a bus before catching up to the Chippies.

The classroom opens and they find the Road Block.

In this Road Block, teams must figure out the time in five different Russian cities.  They will first be given a local Moscow time, then shown a map of the different time zones in Russia and finally shown a map of cities from the different time zones.

TAR2108 TAR2108 TAR2108

Jaymes and Lexi work together, but after 11 tries, the professor tells them they are incorrect.  Finally, Lexi realizes the “+X”s on the map aren’t with respect to Moscow (and actually to the UTC), so they adjust the time differences according to that.

Finally on their 12th try, the professor says… “I’m really sorry… BUT YOU WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

They open the next clue revealing the Detour.
In Movers, teams must learn and perform a traditional Russian soldier dance.
In Shakers, teams will attend a fancy party where they must identify the correct number of seven different Russian leaders.

Both teams choose Movers and Jaymes & James make sure to help Trey & Lexi.

TAR2108 TAR2108 TAR2108

Meanwhile, Natale & Nadiya start the Leg and have a few laughs with their jolly taxi driver before arriving at the university and deciding to use the Express Pass as this is the last Leg they can use it.

The first two teams get to the National Hotel and change into Russian soldier uniforms before choosing a teacher.  James, who injured his ankle in Shanghai, struggles through the pain.

They both finish and head out together, but Trey & Lexi run the other direction to find a taxi when Jaymes & James were trying to help them get one.  They hurry to the Pit Stop at Sokolniki Park and Jaymes & James claim their first win and a trip to Costa Rica.  Trey & Lexi finish 2nd.

Over at the dancing Detour, Natalie rips her pants while practicing, but she and Nadiya comfortably finish and head to the Pit Stop to officially check-in 3rd.

TAR2108 TAR2108 TAR2108

Ryan & Abbie start the Leg and head to the university where Ryan chooses to do the Road Block.  He’s sure he’s got it on the first try and even stands up to leave, but the professor tells him he’s not correct.  Ryan becomes frustrated and complains about a mistake on the map or something else and that he couldn’t possibly be wrong.

“Try to relax, I’m on your side,” says the professor as Ryan apparently directs his concerns to the production crew.

On his 25th attempt, Ryan finally realizes what’s going on and the professor hands him the next clue.  They head to the Pit Stop to finish 4th.

Meanwhile, James & Abba continue searching for the passport.  They borrow a local’s cell phone to call the Embassy then go to a police station to see the report.

Josh & Brent get to the Road Block and Brent says he got the trick on the first try and they head out to the Detour.  They choose the Shakers side and decide to just relax and have fun since James & Abba are way behind.

After the Detour, they go to the Pit Stop to officially check-in 5th.

TAR2108 TAR2108 TAR2108

James & Abba have done all they can to try and secure their lost passport so they continue with the Leg.  The hop into a car with a Russian priest for the Speed Bump before being seen running to the Mat where Phil tells them they are eliminated from the Race.

Episode Thoughts
Well, that was a strange and odd episode.  Probably the biggest logistical nightmare TAR has ever had.  From stolen passports to teams half a day behind, it must have been crazy.

Then we have maybe one of the shortest Legs ever and just a strange flow with the gap between teams just incredible wide.  It was just a weird episode.

Now the good first.  The taxi drivers were hilarious.  Not to mention the fun professor and an extra week to enjoy the fierce swim coach.  The Road Block was a great tricky challenge, but also frustrating to see teams having no idea what UTC is.  Even if you don’t know what that stands for, you should at least know what it means.  How many times have you had to set up your time zone on your computer or on websites?

The dancing side of the Detour was typical TAR, but the other side of the Detour was incredibly boring.  Just horrible.  It was a watered down and poor version of those classic TAR tasks where they had to match a picture or design amongst a room full of people.

Also, we got no departure times for the teams.  Now, TAR has moved away from having 12 hour Pit Stops or even 24 or 36 and really just let teams depart at arbitrary times (though still with respect to their arrival times). But not showing any times seemed odd.

As for the passport drama, it was an unusual circumstance having last leg be a non-elimination leg.  Otherwise James & Abba would’ve just been eliminated last leg instead.

An odd episode for a strange Leg.

Trey & Alexis Trey & Lexi – A solid leg for them.  Kudos to Lexi for figuring out the trick at the Road Block.  They are getting into a rhythm and staying consistent now which bodes well for the future.  And they’re friendly and nice, which is a plus.
Jaymes & James Jaymes & James – A well deserved win for them.  They Raced well these last two Legs and seem to be stepping up which is something they need to do earlier.  But they’re here now and have a good shot to make it to the end.
Natalie & Nadiya Natalie & Nadiya – An okay leg for them.  They deserve kudos for having been able to hold on to their Express Pass until the absolute last Leg.  Other teams have wasted it on easy and early tasks.
James & Mark James & Abba – It wasn’t just a rough Leg for them, it was a rough Race.  They were able to push through a lot of challenges, but seems like losing a passport was the only one they could not get through.  An unfortunate situation thanks to a despicable taxi driver.  They were Racing well and could’ve certainly gone all the way.
Abbie & Ryan Abbie & Ryan – Ryan was definitely not making himself look good at the Road Block.  Was he directing his complaints to the production during that task?  He’s apparently been going on a mini-rant on Twitter too about TAR being scripted with production “f up”s and encouraging fans to watch the American Music Awards instead of TAR.    Um…okay.
Josh & Brent Josh & Brent – They are incredibly lucky.  They should be gone right now if it hadn’t been for James & Abba’s taxi driver.  They also failed at the Detour of Leg 7 and received a four hour penalty, yet still survive.  They’ve gotten too many breaks this Race for me to want to root for them to the end.
