Recap: Power Rangers DinoThunder, Episode 32 – Thunder Struck (Part 2)

Okay first off, DinoThunder has been an amazing season. No matter what anyone says, it had the best writing, the best acting, the best production/special effects… no question, DT was just the best.

Okay… the Rangers and Hayley head back to the lab to find Elsa gone and the entire place trashed. Hayley used her a black box to find that Zeltrax had come to take Elsa. So for some reason they all go their separate ways since Ethan gets back in line for Asteroid Conquest where Angela is still waiting for him in line. Zeltrax unleashes his ZelZord (which by the way, doesn’t look like a zord and it has boobs). He blasts a mountain which gets a huge chunk just blown off. Unusually, Ethan gets a solo morphing sequence. It would’ve been nice to have the individual morphing sequences one last time. One of the things I’ve always wondered is why can’t they shell out a few more dollars to make morphing sequences that have all the rangers in them, instead of just individual ones that have to be squeezed and all that.

Too much Sentai footage, which I hate. Anyway, they arrive in downtown and Zeltrax sends the Triptoids (ewe) and they leave Trent to handle them as Tommy goes into the ZelZord to save Elsa and Conner, Kira, and Ethan pilot the megazord. Kira decides to go help Tommy save Elsa (again, Sentai footage sucks). The ZelZord is too powerful so Conner tells Ethan to pilot the Mesodon Megazord. Kira and Tommy fight triptoids and Zeltrax in the Zord. We get the final Tommy/Zeltrax battle as Kira takes Elsa back to the ground. Tommy joins them as they watch Ethan and Conner fight ZelZord. They use all the zords (minus Trent’s Dino Stegazord because there is no Sentai footage of that, by this time, AbareKiller (the White Ranger) has already died. The ZelZord still isn’t giving up, so Tommy tells Conner and Ethan to sacrifice the zords. They are all destroyed.

It seems Conner and Ethan didn’t escape in time, but of course they did. Conner says “So just like that, its over?” And Mesogog appears “Of course its not over.” Tommy tells Elsa to step aside and she goes behind a tank to find Devin and Cassidy filming the whole thing. They morph one last time to fight Mesogog who has just transformed into a really ugly bobblehead monster. It was really freaky looking. One last great morphed fight, and they finally pull out the Matrix-y special effects for the finale (very underused this season, maybe under 5 times). Conner weakens Mesogog a little using the Battlizer, but Mesogog multiplies. They combine the power of their DinoGems to create some sort of Dragon Dinosaur combo and it gobbles up Mesogog forever.

They demorph and they all feel “different.” The power of the DinoGems are gone. Cassidy, Devin, and Elsa come out from behind the tank. She tells them that the video of them will secure her career as a star journalist, but her friendship with them is more important and she gives Tommy the tape. Devin takes Cassidy in his arms as they go to the prom. Elsa, awkwardly turns and walks away as well. Conner, Kira, Ethan, Tommy, and Trent finally acknowledge that its over and they turn and walk the other way…

So its the Reefside High Senior Prom. Cassidy and Devin get out of a limo to what looks like a circus/movie premiere at the Pantheon or Lincoln Memorial. Hayley makes an appearance (where was she the whole time?) as Cassidy thanks her for helping with the Prom. Ethan is playing with his new Nintendo DS (in stores now) when Conner arrives with THE TREE BITCH! omg… big, huge mistake writers! Doug Sloan, what the hell were you smoking? Oh they dropped the freakin’ ball…… Ethan says? “The tree girl?” and Conner goes “Its what on the inside that counts?” Oh yeah Conner? well how about your best friend Kira, who is amazing on the inside, freakin’ hot on the outside, can sing, can fight, and is your friend who DIDN’T have a date?!?!?! Ugh, maybe with the team-up, we’ll see Conner and Kira married or something… then again… we didn’t see anything between Ninja Storm’s Dustin and Marah or Blake and Tori.

Anyway, Ethan goes to the prom with Angela, the girl at the theatre. Trent is upstairs with Tommy and Mercer. He says he’s attending Art School in the fall. Elsa comes down in a blue dress and Mercer asks is it would be okay if an old friend could dance with the new principal of the school. Tommy goes downstairs and onto the stage to introduce Kira who is performing the final song. Of course, Emma is looking hot and she sings another great song as we see clips from the season. Wow, what memories. And we end with a still shot of Kira, Ethan, and Conner. The 3 best Power Rangers ever.

I was disappointed, but excited, happy, and sad at the same time. Disappointed that we didn’t get more out of the episode, especially after an amazing Part 1 of Thunder Struck. Of course, I didn’t like Conner and Krista going to prom together, but what can you do. Power Rangers: DinoThunder has been the best season of the entire series. This season didn’t have the stupidness, the crappy special effects, the naiveness of the first few seasons. Doug Sloan and Ann Austen were able to write perfect stories (with a few crappy ones along the way) and present some of the best material in PR history. James Napier, Emma Lahana, and Kevin Duhaney were perfect. They led the best cast of any PR season with ease. Tommy was never my favorite Ranger, but it was good to see Jason David Frank and a piece of Ranger history involved in an amazing season. Jeffrey Parazzo is not a horrible actor, but he could’ve been better especially if Trent stayed evil. The supporting cast in Katrina Devine, Tom Hern, and Islay Johnston definitely added a lot. The special effects were amped up this season and improved a lot on Ninja Storm’s production.

Overall, DinoThunder has become one of my favorite shows of all time (I’d like to stress that I only mean DinoThunder and not Power Rangers as a whole.) If only they made a movie out of the season, I don’t want it to end!!!!

I’ll post caps maybe as late as tomorrow. So it looks like SPD is on its way… half dogs and half cats included.

Emma Lahana New Song

Emma Lahana, better known as Kira Ford, the Yellow DinoThunder Ranger, has a new song posted on her website: Just Words. Of course, another great song from her… so go download it 🙂

I’d love to hear a duet with Emma and James Napier how great would that be? lol

Recap: Power Rangers DinoThunder, Episode 37 – Thunder Struck (Part 1)

Words can not describe how amazing this episode was. Okay let’s go in order… I think Conner and Kira could still happen, the two of them going to prom together? Huge possibility. Jump to Mesogog’s lair where he uncovers his Weapons of Mass Destruction… or really, his lasers that’ll turn all humankind into mutant reptiles. He needs energy to power the lasers up so he starts with taking Elsa’s energy away. She is strapped and the beam destroys her (or so it seems) powering the lasers, just a little bit. Trent comes out of the shadows and demands Mesogog release his father if he can get him the Dino Gems. Mesogog and Trent come to the conclusion that they can trust each other, so they have a deal. Jump to the top of a building in downtown Reefside, a long-haired woman spins around, disoriented…. and surprise… its Elsa… or at least human Elsa or whatever her name turns out to be… (Mrs. Fernandez maybe?)… but wait, here’s Zeltrax coming to take her away.

So Cassidy ruins Devin’s proposal to go to the prom by telling him that if they don’t find out the true identities of the Power Rangers, they’ll be fired from Channel 3. Cut to the theatre where Ethan is already waiting in line for a movie (the sequel to the best science fiction movie ever made) that will come out in 2 days. He meets this girl (who looked a little older than Ethan) who will probably end up being his date to the prom. Dr. O calls him and tells him to meet them at the wherehouse where Zeltrax is holding Elsa. At the wherehouse, another amazing unmorphed fight with Conner, Kira, Ethan, Tommy, and Trent against Zeltrax. But wait, its time to morph and who’s there? Devin with his trusty camcorder ready to record everything, and he does.

Tommy finds Elsa inside the wherehouse and they bring her to the lab. Trent explains his plan: they give him their Dino Gems, have Mesogog release Mercer, and they run before Mesogog can get his hands on the Gems. Everyone is pretty reluctant, it is a very risky plan, but they have no other choice. He says that he will open up an invisi-portal for them to be able to get through with the new vehicle. They leave Elsa alone in the lab as they go see Hayley’s newest toy. She uses her controller and a huge semi (hmm… an Elf perhaps?) comes driving towards them.

At Mesogog’s lair, Trent thinks he’ll actually release Mercer, but Mesogog uses that head laser beam thingy and takes the Gems and powers the WMD lasers. Trent tries to get his strength up to open the portals. In the truck, Hayley says they’re already at the optimum speed but the portals aren’t open yet. She tells everyone to hold on just as Trent pushes the button in time for Hayley to drive the truck into the invisi-portal. They make it through to Mesogog’s island. Mesogog is of course angry and sends tyrannodrones to stop the truck. Conner, Kira, Ethan, and Tommy go out to fight them in another amazing unmorphed fight scene. They all get to use their Dino Powers, first Kira’s Ptera scream then Ethan’s skin armor. Tommy yells to Hayley that she go ahead to destroy the laser and she speeds on through.

Hayley is one hell of a driver as she maneuvers through Mesogog’s explosions. Tyrannodrones decide to go and destroy Hayley’s laser on the roof of the truck. The t-drones change the lasers alignment and Hayley calls Conner who uses his super speed to catch up to the truck. He fights off the t-drones on the roof of the truck. Wow, another awesome fight scene… And after Conner kick ass, he realigns the laser, Hayley tells him to get his ass off the truck and she fires at Mesogog’s lasers and the lair. The lasers (which are freakin’ huge) are destroyed and the lair explodes. The place is destroyed as Trent grabs the Gems and runs to find his father. Mesogog is hit by something and collapses. Trent finds his father and they try to escape the lair. Conner, Kira, Ethan, and Tommy head back into the truck and Hayley is ready to go. Kira worries about Trent (ewe) but Tommy says he knows his way around the place. They get their butts off their island and through the invisi-portal right before the island implodes on itself.

They don’t see Trent or Mercer anywhere. Ethan jokes that they could come fall out of the sky (like Kira did in Day of the Dino [Part 2]) which they did. Tommy says they should get back to the lab… and we jump to the lab to see Elsa reacting to an explosion right next to her. Zeltrax has made his way into the lab and is destroying the place… the place is a disaster and he takes Elsa again… to be continued

WOW This episode was freakin’ amazing. It has to be the best episode in Power Rangers’ entire 12 year history. Every single thing about the episode, the acting, the dialogue, the action sequences, the fight scenes, the twists, the turns, the toys… everything was perfect. The effects were perfect… there aren’t enough words to describe how amazing this episode was. I’m sure part 2 will be just as amazing, but it will be hard to top this episode. (Well if we get a Conner and Kira kiss in part 2, then it easily becomes the best episode ever 😉

This season is one episode from being over… why?!?!?!?!

Some caps from the finale:

Best Power Rangers DinoThunder Episodes of the Season

Most of the episodes this year were amazing. But 6 episodes stand out as the best:

I wasn’t expecting much before the premiere of DinoThunder. I went into the premiere thinking that “oh, this is going to be as stupid as Ninja Storm.” But after that one hour, I knew that this season was going be something special. And it was… Day of the Dino introduced us to the 3 best rangers ever, IMO, character-wise and acting wise. James Napier, Emma Lahana, and Kevin Duhaney delivered from the very first time we saw Conner kicking the soccer ball into the goal, hear Kira singing “Freak You Out,” and watch Ethan walking through the sprinklers he set off with an umbrella. Perfect premiere episodes, definitely the best introduction in PR history.
A high point in any PR series is the unmorphed fighting, but it is even better when its unmorphed fighting between rangers! The DinoThunder rangers fought the Ninja Storm rangers, unmorphed and it was a great scene. The action in the episode was perfect, both morphed and unmorphed.
All the secrets of DinoThunder were revealed in this episode, plus the long awaited fight between an unmorphed Tommy and Elsa as Principal Randall in a pantsuit, AND in front of the school and students! This episode was the perfect episode before the final episode before the finale.
One of the most serious episodes in PR history. I think this was only the 2nd time in PR history that a character was shown in the hospital, and Tommy was ready to die, the doctor even told them flat out that he didn’t have much time. It was also a pretty cool flashback to Mighty Morphin, Zeo, and Turbo even though all five seasons of those teams sucked.
This was the 500th episode of Power Rangers and we got treated to clips from all 11 seasons. It was a great tribute and was a bridge between two other great episodes “Wave Goodbye” and “Back in Black.”

The Worst Power Rangers DinoThunder Episodes of the Season

DinoThunder has been an amazing season, but they have had some speedbumps. And unfortunately the episodes crashed and burned. Here are the worst, most useless episodes of the season:

After watching the first minute, I thought to myself “well, this should be a funny episode.” But how quickly it turned into a painful experience. A stupid plot, ugly actress… let’s see on April 11th, in my weekly PRDT review I said “-That Nikki [Valentina] is suppose to be every man’s dream and the envy of every woman? She was not pretty at all…” In fact she was ugly. Then had Ethan hyperventilating over her? And Conner was drooling over her when Kira is standing there next to him?

Well there was one good part about this ep… when Nikki was strapped to a chair in Mesogog’s lair, Elsa is bitchy to her and says “Well, I’m not the one strapped to a chair now am I?!?” You have to see the scene to appreciate it. But only that scene since you shouldn’t sit through the crap of an episode.

Another stupid, useless subplot. They could’ve found another way to give Ethan an episode. The bully was so corny at the end “I didn’t think you’d talk to a guy like me” or some crap like that. Ugh… waste of an episode.

The three-parter as a whole was good, but two scenes in this episode alone make it suck. They both involve Cassidy and Devin, and if that wasn’t bad enough they have this stupid kid come and has this incredibly crappy dubbed voice. It was so freakin’ bad, no words could describe it.

Nice to see Kira have a sorta-kinda-focus ep, but it was still bad. The dialogue was stupid, the Sentai scenes showed just how stupid Sentai is, it was a mess.

This episode made me never want to watch Japanese Sentai, EVER.

Another waste of an episode so close to the season’s end which could have been given to something else more important than seeing what the Rangers sleep in. Big whoop…

This should’ve been a great episode, the introduction of the Battlizer. But it failed on so many levels. First of all, they have Conner drooling over the “tree bitch” Krista… when HELLO Kira is right there! And then the battlizer… while its grown on me… has Dragon yo-yo and super stretch kick? They could’ve done better. And the whole deadwood subplot, ugh…

These episodes and a few others could’ve been completely eliminated and replaced with better episodes that actually involved character and story development. But no, the writers were lazy… thank you writers.

The Worst Power Rangers DinoThunder Storyline Mistakes

Power Rangers: DinoThunder has been a great season, probably the most mature season of the entire series as well as the best all around. But the season could have been a lot better if they had 5 things:

With this being the United States, and with Disney hovering over the producers and writers, you couldn’t actually have a HUMAN be evil. How un-Disney-like. So of course, all of a sudden, Trent is turned good. The show would’ve had so much more ways to go and a better storyline post-White Ranger reveal if Trent stayed evil. In the Japanese Sentai, the White Ranger, who is named AbareKiller, is evil for the entire series and even dies a bloody death at the end. Now of course we won’t see that on PR, but the writers could’ve have slowly progressed the story to have the Rangers react to Trent being evil, show what he’s capable of doing. They also wouldn’t have needed to make the “White Ranger Clone.” Because PR uses Japanese footage for some of the morphed scenes, they couldn’t just waste the White Ranger footage so they needed to create the clone to be able to use the White Ranger vs Red/Blue/Yellow/Black Sentai scenes. This was a very bad move, and the show would’ve been able to go in a completely different, and better direction if they had kept him evil longer.
You would think that with only 3 main rangers, we’d be able to get to know them better, have more “focus eps” on them. But other than maybe 3 episodes for each of them, we didn’t get any GOOD episodes that focused JUST on Conner, or JUST on Kira, or JUST on Ethan. Character development was not the strongest part of this season, and with James Napier, Emma Lahana, and Kevin Duhaney in the roles, character development would’ve been perfect. It would’ve been nice to see more of their personal lives, relationships. For example, developed a Conner/Kira “relationship” or elaborate on the Ethan/Cassidy pairing. They had all the pieces, but they never put the puzzle together. Next year, it will be even less likely for focus eps since there will be at least 7 MAIN rangers, with 3 or 4 more introduced during the season.
It seems the writers tended to get lazy. They put in clip shows, pointless episodes, and cheap one set episodes. Before Lightspeed Rescue, PR produced more than 40 episodes a season. Then when Ninja Storm came around, they only produced 38 becuase Disney was too cheap to pay for a Wild Force/Ninja Storm team up, so that was 2 less episodes produced. But this year, there was a team-up yet we still get 38 episodes. Two episodes and the fillers add up to much more time to develop the characters and the story that is obviously there but remains untouched. Once again, so much potential wasted.
Where did Hayley come from? What is the extent of her relationship with Tommy? Where did Elsa come from? Was she good before she turned evil? Is she even human? Who was Smitty before he became Zeltrax? Why didn’t they gradually introduce the concept of Smitty instead of springing him on the audience in one episode? With the extra episodes minus the fillers, these questions could’ve been answered.
It seemed as though the writing was a lot better with the unmorphed scenes, I guess that’s because the writers don’t have to come up with lines to fit in with the Japanese footage. Of course we need the morphed battles and the zord battles, but we need some unmorphed scenes too. That little need really showed up this season and really made you think that DinoThunder can easily be a one-hour series.

DinoThunder had so much potential. In my opinion, it is the best Power Rangers season ever; writing-wise/story, characters, acting, special effects. There were some things during the season that made mesay, “Wait, should 7 year old kids really be watching that?”

The Best Power Rangers DinoThunder KirCo Moments That Weren’t

Today, I have 5 episodes in which there were perfect opportunities to further the CONNER/KIRA “relationship,” but the writers didn’t take that chance. So really, these are missed opportunities to capitalize on the obvious natural chemistry between James Napier and Emma Lahana

While seeing Conner and Ethan dancing together was hilarious, how sweet would it have been to have Conner and Kira show Ethan how its done. Then of course we have the two look into each others eyes and have everyone else around them say “Finally…” since they know something’s going on between them, but then Conner and Kira break away from each other, pretending they don’t like each other and yeah… you get the picture.
Well, Conner was the only one who came out and told Kira that the music video for “Patiently” was not her. He cares for her in the sense that he knows Kira should be who she really is and not conform to some image. Before that, Kira was trying to call people after they dressed her in some wacky clothes and she calls Conner first. Well Conner could’ve given Kira some advice on what she should and shouldn’t do, stuff like that.
After that bitch Trent tells Kira that he is the White Ranger, Kira could’ve cried on Conner’s shoulder and then he, being so enraged that someone hurt Kira, would’ve gone and kicked his ass. Nice bonding opportunity for KirCo.
Kinda wierd in this ep because Conner and Kira walked into a seemingly closed Hayley’s Cyberspace, but they were both very surprised when they find Ethan there using the new satellite dish. And of course, Conner seemed really pissed the rest of the episode, so maybe KirCo wanted to be alone that night? Ethan could’ve cracked a joke or something.
Conner has a crush on Kylie Styles, a huge pop singer who was once Kira’s best friend. There was a moment in front of the escalators when Conner says something like “She’s so… and you’re so…” reffering to how Kira and Kylie were completely different. Of course Kira got a little mad. But at the end of the episode, we could’ve seen Conner go up to Kira after the song and tell her how he thinks she is a great person, great voice, and how he really likes her more than he does Kylie… or something like that.

Kira is singing the chorus to “Freak You Out”

Conner: “Babe, could you keep it down… trying to stay focused here.”

Kira: (to Conner) “Did you just call me ‘babe’?” (to Ethan) “Did he just call me ‘babe’?”

Kira walks up to Conner

Conner: (innocently to Kira) “What? Just chill out why don’t ya?”

Kira: “Listen, my name is Kira… maybe you should write it on your hand or something, so you can remember.”

Conner looks hurt

That was the moment when I knew James and Emma had perfect chemistry and Conner and Kira were definitely going to have something special.

And also, Tommy, Hayley, Ethan, and even Trent can see there is something “there” between Conner & Kira but they never say anything about it. It could’ve been one of those things where everyone but the two people knows theres something there. Oh well… maybe by next year’s team up. Or better yet, we still have two episodes… something CAN happen… I hope.

Recap: Power Rangers DinoThunder, Episode 36 – A Test of Trust

Well after last week, this was a very disappointing episode. No wonder they had the reveals last week, they wanted a clip show. This episode would’ve been fine if PRDT didn’t have so many clip shows (“Legacy of Power,” “Lost and Found in Translation”) and filler eps (“Game On,” “Ocean Alert,” “In Your Dreams,” “Drawn into Danger”) already. The penultimate episode before the finale should’ve set up the finale. Instead its made stupid people actually think the finale’s gonna suck. I still think the finale will be amazing, especially after an amazing season (minus the few episodes of crap).

THE GOOD: (just a few)
#Conner, Kira, and Ethan’s flashbacks were good. They made me remember when before I watched the premiere thinking that this season was gonna suck. The premiere and the rest of the season definitely showed me otherwise. But the clips also showed me the huge potential that was just dropped for some reason (the writers were lazy)
#Mesogog ready to kill Elsa. Elsa was defenitely hurting. And then the separation; Mesogog seemed more psycho afterwards. I liked it, he needs to be incredibly evil in the finale like Master Org was in Wild Force. But the only reason they had the separation now was so that Trent wouldn’t have to fight his father. whatever…

#Triassic being defeated in his own dimension? and then falling into Japan? Sucks
#Tommy’s clips had a lot less meaning than the 3 main rangers. And Trent’s clips went on too long… They made it seem like it was okay to lie by redeeming Trent, though in no way was Trent redeemed today. He could’ve gone to them earlier and maybe they could’ve helped Mercer. But Trent being the hero of the day was just plain stupid. The character of Trent was definitely mishandled. They should’ve kept him evil longer, it would’ve made a much better story and opened up so much more potential.
#The Blizzard Force Megazord debuted… and then was destroyed. It was suppose to be a big weapon for the enemy, it was in Sentai Abaranger. Then didn’t even call it Blizzard Force… the Replicate Megazord? WTF?

Overall a big letdown. But the finale still looks amazing… it will be… MESOGOG HAS SADDAM’S WMDs! wow!
