Recap: No.1 Sentai Gozyuger, Episode 19 – WhiteBurn with Two Hearts!

Mashiro tells Hoeru they must retreat for now. Kuon smirks.

The next day, Mashiro runs into Hoeru working at a honey store. After scoffing at Hoeru not even knowing anything about honey, Mashiro asks what Hoeru’s wish is. Hoeru thinks back to the woman telling him not have wishes and dreams.

Hoeru says he doesn’t have one, that’s why he’s looking for it.

Hoeru’s boss comes out and welcomes apparent frequent customer Mashiro and asks if Hoeru is being rude. He must have said yes as Hoeru is fired once again.

As he walks in the park, a woman calls out to Hoeru. And he is shocked to see it is Mine-san, the woman in the rain in his memory!

Hoeru brings her to the café and says he never expected he’d get to see her again. She says she just recently returned to this world and he’s grown up to become very handsome.

The others watch them and decide to help Hoeru out from being so awkward. Kinjiro serves them their coffee and asks what their relationship is. Hoeru explains that she was very kind to him as a kid when they were trapped in No One World.

Kinjiro says Hoeru was just flirting with her right now though. Hoeru denies that, but Mine wants to go on a date with him and he pulls him out of the café.

The others are quite impressed. Sumino says as the No.1 Busybody, she will not just stand around.

At the temple, Hoeru and Mine are talking a walk. Hoeru is unsure what to do on a date. Mine suggests they play badminton.

The others have followed them. Sumino takes the lead in their mission and first sends out Kinjiro to liven things up.

Mr. Party People suggests facing off in a game of badminton and the loser has to drink spicy soda. Hoeru is unable to return the shuttlecock when Kinjiro takes him by surprise, thus losing the game. Mine cheers Hoeru on in drinking the soda.

Hoeru takes a sip and burns his mouth.

Hoeru and Mine head to a sweets shop next. Suddenly, Hoeru chugs matcha from the bowl, much to Ryugi’s horror.

Ryugi hurries over to properly (and forcefully) teach Hoeru how to drink matcha in the right way.

Hoeru and Mine go for another walk. Seeing little boys run around, Mine says that’s how young Hoeru was when he was forced to wander No One World. Hoeru says he is okay now. And because of that experience, he was able to meet her.

Mine says there’s something she always wanted to tell him.

The others arrive again and it is Rikuo’s turn to help guide Hoeru to close the deal here. Hoeru, however, refuses to follow Rikuo’s cue cards.

He takes Mine’s hand and they run.

Meanwhile, Mashiro is enjoying his delicious honey when Kuon suddenly appears. Mashiro catches Kuon’s sword before he gets slashed. Kuon would like Mashiro to stop collecting Rings.

Mashiro says that is a very convenient request for him, but Kuon says it is not. Mashiro asks what’s Kuon so worried about. Perhaps the scar on his back that will get worse if he doesn’t do anything? Kuon is annoyed, but Mashiro says a god knows all.

Mashiro knows Hoeru is Kuon’s only hope. “But hope can sometimes be painful.” Kuon grabs Mashiro’s collar and tells him not to run his mouth.

Both of them henshin and manage to knock a Ring out of each other’s possession. Mashiro takes Kuon’s Gekiranger Ring and Kuon takes Mashiro’s Ninninger Ring.

Mashiro says stealing from a god is quite reckless. But Kuon says he has no god, only angels. He thinks of Hoeru and says that angel might become a fallen one soon.

Meanwhile, Hoeru and Mine reach the beach. Mine says she has had fun and is happy to see Hoeru has such nice friends. She is also happy to have seen many new sides of Hoeru today.

The others arrive and watch from afar as Hoeru and Mine sit down for lunch she has made. Hoeru says it is delicious.

Mine stands and wants to say what she meant to say earlier. But as she starts, Kuon arrives and shoots her right in the stomach.

Kuon asks Hoeru if he enjoyed his date with a corpse today. Mashiro arrives, now understanding what Kuon had done.

Kuon explains Mine had been swallowed by a NoWan long ago and died before ever getting the chance to return here. Her wish to see him one more time granted her temporary life. He mocks Hoeru for being unable to protect her once again.

The others quickly henshin and take on Kuon.

Hoeru tells Mine to hold on. She says that she knew she wasn’t alive, but wanted to come here to tell him something. Back then, she told him not to have any wishes. And that has eaten away at her since. Hoeru knows it is because you get swallowed up by the NoWan if you have wishes.

However, Mine says he was able to get back here and is doing fine. So it is okay for him to find his wish. She asks him to promise her that.
Mine dissolves away.

Mashiro tells Hoeru that taking advantage of someone’s love is quite rude. He offers Hoeru follow him and they can take care of Kuon together. But Hoeru goes to finish the lunch Mine made for him and then howls.

Hoeru tells Mashiro he does not pray to gods or take orders from anyone. No matter how many times he may lose, he will take what he wants himself. Just like Mashiro’s bottle of honey which he chugs now.

Hoeru says he is not Mashiro’s second generation. If he does not like someone, he will punch, headbutt or bite them himself.

Mashiro laughs. BearKuma asks if Hoeru is dumb. Mashiro says yes, but Tega Sword chose him for a reason and he now knows why.

Kuon summons Universe Warriors to keep the others busy. Hoeru arrives and asks Mine-san to give him strength. He henshins and charges toward Kuon. Kuon is surprised Hoeru was able to overcome the grief and sees he really is stronger now. But that does not mean Hoeru can protect anyone or get his own wish.

Hoeru says Kuon’s words have no power over him anymore. Hoeru declares Kuon his prey and they battle.

Hoeru tells Kuon not to underestimate him. He kicks him down the stairs.

The others finish off the Universe Warriors. Kuon hops into Universe Daizyuzin and Hoeru hops into Tega Sword Red. But just then, it starts snowing. Mashiro arrives in GoodeBurn and offers to help Hoeru. GoodeBurn agrees. The two of them combine into Tega Sword WhiteBurn.

They battle.

Kuon says no matter how much Hoeru battles for revenge, nothing will bring Mine back. Hoeru says he knows and that he wasn’t able to say the words to her. But he will move forward.

Hoeru declares he is No.1 at a broken heart. Hoeru and Mashiro deliver a Tega Sword Heart Breaking at Kuon who sends a Black Animal Heart back to counter.

Kuon leaves Universe Daizyuzin before it explodes.

At the café that evening, Hoeru sucks on a flower and thinks about his promise to Mine. Mashiro walks in and tells Hoeru that despite not being able to save her, she is smiling now in the afterlife.

Mashiro tells Hoeru to cheer up, much to his surprise. They teaser each other into the night.

Episode Thoughts

A fun episode! It’s very interesting how this season just brings on random people from the Gozyus’ pasts and uses them for one ep and then they leave. Lol If I wasn’t enjoying this season as much, I’d deride all of this as dumb plot devices and a waste of good story potential for our heroes. But since I am enjoying the season, I think it’s all good, simple fun. Lol

So in this episode, we finally meet the mysterious woman in Hoeru’s memories. And yes, she was a grown woman! While Hoeru was a little boy! Lol Thankfully though, there didn’t seem to be any romantic subtext in their No One World interactions. And there really wasn’t anything romantic in the present day had it not been for the others being busy bodies and wanting to tease their little brother.

Hoeru is the youngest in the group, yeah? I feel like he is. The only one who could be younger than him is Rikuo and I feel like at most they’re the same age. Of course, Kinjiro is supposed to be a high school student, but we know he is Grandpa Joji really. So that doesn’t count. Lol

But anyway, it just felt like siblings teasing and helping their youngest brother out on a date. So it’s their fault for making things weird when all Mine-san wanted to do was make sure Hoeru was happy now compared to their time in No One World and that he pursues a wish. Lol Simple as that!

So a nice little insight into Hoeru’s time in No One World. Which in turn helped to further Kuon’s part of the story as well. Even if just a little bit with regards to his back slash and how Hoeru might be important for him. I do hope we get lots more about Hoeru and Kuon/ Hisamitsu’s time in No One World.

It was also a nice reminder that NoWans latch on to wishes. So the advice of Mine-san to Hoeru to not have a wish so as not to get gobbled up by a NoWan is very interesting in the grander plot of the season. I tend to forget details like that and just go along with the MOTW format. But it’s just a great reminder of the danger that lurks during the season and what the Gozyugers are partly fighting for. Or against, in this sense lol

Unexpected, but nice to see Hoeru and Mashiro kind of get closer this episode too. Mashiro coming to understand Hoeru a bit more in this episode was great. And again, goes back to what I love about the team’s positive dynamic.

Overall, another great and fun episode for Gozyuger!
