Filipino Friday, May 9, 2025 – James Reid, Marlo Mortel, SB19, ONE VERSE
Well, I’m in the Philippines right now, so why not a Filipino Friday! Hehe. Here’s some fresh tracks from James Reid, Marlo Mortel, SB19, ONE VERSE

So I guess Miss Universe Philippines will have their own OSTs every year now! That’s pretty amazing! Lol Our family watched the pageant last week and I thought the songs performed were just the singers’ own singles. But the songs were specifically written for the pageant. Interesting! But even more interesting is that they were great songs!

“Love the Chase” by James Reid

I don’t think I’ve listened to a James Reid song in years. But I was pleasantly surprised when he performed during MUPH in the swimsuit competition with this song. “Love the Chase” is certainly the kind of track I remember listening to from him years ago. And it’s a perfect summer track. Even a great Night Drive playlist candidate too. Just great vibes. And a song that very much suits James Reid’s voice too.

“Bed Weather” by Marlo Mortel

I don’t know who Marlo Mortel is. But he delivered a great performance of “Bed Weather” for the evening gown competition of MUPH. Also an original song for the pageant, it’s also a great vibe and a Night Drive-type of track as well. I don’t know who or what to compare the song to, but it’s a familiar-sounding track. And I’m saying that as a positive!

“Time” by SB19

I’ll admit, I’m not really a fan of SB19’s “DUNGKA!” Just not my speed. What is my speed though is “Time”, the emotional and heartfelt track that shows the group’s softer and more introspective sides that perhaps might get overshadowed by the admittedly catchy and bombastic performance-driven tracks. Coupled with the heartbreakingly poignant music video, “Time” is just that kind of song and performance that hits you hard right in the feels. A must-experience for sure. But be prepared with something to wipe the tears away at the end!

“Ako Dapat” by ONE VERSE

Great to see more P-pop groups and ONE VERSE make their debut with “Ako Dapat”. It’s a fun pop track that is a great blend of traditional pop OPM and a modern K-pop-influenced P-pop vibe. The group has a youthful vibe and the music video matches the slightly retro sound of the song. A strong debut!
