Recap: No.1 Sentai Gozyuger, Episode 10 – Go, Go, Go! Showa Has Arrived!

Queen TegaJune informs Bouquet that they will be adding new forces to help with their Ring procurement. Kuon arrives with a now-controlled Osai Meguru and says he is the only one who knows how to pilot Daizyujin.

Bouquet does not think this is a good idea, but she not dare go against the queen. TegaJune reminds Bouquet that all her love should be directed at her. She orders her to show this new servant the way.

At the café, Ryugi offers Hoeru a free coffee after seeing him suck on a flower. Ryugi relates to Hoeru also having a complicated family. But he’s also worried about where Kuon took Osai-san. Hoeru has an idea where.

Meanwhile, Kinjiro runs into Sumino who, it turns out, works part-time at a bento shop. She admits to Kinjiro that being a private detective doesn’t pay all the bills and she works two jobs to support her family. Kinjiro thinks that’s a very Showa way of thinking which he means as a compliment.

Just then, Showa No.1 appears and vows to teach the Reiwa age about just how good Showa really was and still is. He turns the clock back on half the city, returning it to the Showa era.

Sumino is quite excited to experience the Showa era and wants to take photos, but she has a rotary phone instead of her smartphone. She tells the NoWan she needs her phone, but it says the Showa era was all about kindness and warmth which is what the world needs more of today.

Sumino asks what the NoWan would know about Showa anyway. He has Sumino take a seat with him and then flips the chabudai. Kinjiro says the NoWan’s personality is very Showa.

But if it’s a Showa battle brewing, Kinjiro is sure he can win. The NoWan and Kinjiro begin their battle, showing their best Showa activities such as menko, learning English while sleeping, getting buff off of ads on the back of manga, and go-go dancing.

Showa No.1 is declared the winner. Kinjiro does not understand why. The NoWan asks him to show how to make a phone call. Kinjiro motions a swipe and touchscreen dialing which is of course not Showa since they only had rotary phones back then. Kinjiro can’t believe he made that mistake.

The NoWan says Kinjiro might be young again in the Reiwa era, but he is forgetting his Showa spirit. He calls him a stray since he is neither Showa nor Reiwa anymore. He mocks Kinjiro for wanting to be a young boy again as he walks away.

Sumino turns and finds Kinjiro has left. She walks the Showa streets and runs into Aoi and his mother enjoying the view. She says the Showa era is inconvenient and outdated. There’s nothing good about it. But Aoi says there’s some good things too. Like a nice sunset on a now-vacant lot that was turned into a residential neighborhood.

Aoi says he’s never seen the sky so big before. Sumino looks up and agrees.

That evening, Sumino finds Kinjiro on the Reiwa side of Tokyo trying to eat an egg. He feels down after what the NoWan said. Sumino says she understands Kinjiro a little more now. She realizes the Showa era has some good things too after seeing the beautiful sky.

Kinjiro sees the Reiwa skyline and says he sees the good things about the modern day as well.

Next morning, Hoeru and Ryugi are looking for a potential way to get to No One World. Hoeru explains that the two worlds are connected through circular shapes. Just then, Bouquet pops out of one.

Hoeru asks if she knows what happened to Osai. Bouquet says she does, but she summons Aryees to take them on. Bouquet also joins in with some shots.

Back in the Showa side of Tokyo, the NoWan is enjoying a noriben while watching Kaiketsu Zubat on an old TV. He regrets not being able to attend the Zubat hero show the other day.

Kinjiro and Sumino arrive and Kinjiro challenges the NoWan to another battle. The NoWan says the result will be no different. But Sumino takes a photo of the NoWan using a Zubat filter on her smartphone. The NoWan is shocked as Kinjiro explains they can do things like that in Reiwa.

Sumino also shows all of the new Kaiketsu Zubat merchandise that was never available in the Showa era. The NoWan can’t believe it. Kinjiro also points out the noriben the NoWan is eating has evolved into many different kinds of noriben today which can even be delivered quickly.

That’s why, Kinjiro says, it’s because they live in the Reiwa era, they can actually enjoy the Showa era even more.

Reiwa and Showa, when together, are strong. Just like how Kinjiro and Sumino will be strong working together now to defeat the NoWan.

Kinjiro and Sumino henshin and they battle the NoWan. They teach the NoWan that Showa was a time when everyone looked forward to the future and that is how Reiwa can exist today. Kinjiro says the NoWan is the one who has lost the Showa spirit.

Kinjiro helps pull out the man whom the NoWan fused with before defeating it for good.

Meanwhile, Rikuo pops in with TegaSword to help Hoeru and Ryugi. Bouquet grows angry when thinking about how the blue TegaSword ripped up her photos of her crush Rikuo. She summons Black Daizyujin, piloted by the mind-controlled Osai-san.

Rikuo tries fighting it off, but his attacks don’t work and he gets ejected from TegaSword. The Gozyus come together and Tega Sword informs Hoeru that in the aftermath of the Showa battle, the Showa vitality and the Ninninger Ring’s nintality are responding to each other.

Hoeru henshins to AkaNinger and that allows for five TegaSwords to appear. The Gozyus all hop in to their respective TegaSwords to battle the Daizyujin. Each of them delivers an attack before Hoeru delivers a Wolf Decalibur Finish.

They hurry down to meet Osai-san who is back to normal. He says he is alright and while he doesn’t remember much, he could feel them reaching out while he was in the darkness. Which is what he expected from the Sentai he has put his trust in. He believes his wish has come true and cheers them on.

Later, Kinjiro stops by the bento shop as Sumino is working again and she offers him a bento. He is surprised that she now uses a nickname for him, but not the ones he prefers. He runs off without buying a bento from her.

Episode Thoughts

What a fun episode! I laughed so much this episode, especially Kinjiro and Sumino’s go-go dance scene. I don’t know why it was so amusing. lol

But the episode’s Showa-Reiwa battle was a fun way to do nostalgia and acknowledge the good things about both times. Also a fun way to do the social media trend of comparing how different generations see certain things like how to make a phone call or roll down a car window, things like that.

The episode started out lighthearted and goofy, but had a nice and warm message in the end. The nostalgia was fun and used very well. And it was a great episode for Kinjiro and Sumino especially.

As much as I enjoy falling for a new season right from the start, there’s also a great satisfaction in growing to love a season too. And I’m well on my way with Gozyuger so far. Every episode has been able to build upon the previous one in great ways. And the season has really found its footing now I think.

Kinjiro really has become my favorite character too. He’s hilarious and fun. But all the Gozyus have been great too.

Lots of fun while including some good warmth and interesting drama. They’ve done a good amount so far in these ten episodes. So we’re only getting started. But the season has done very well in getting me fully invested in our heroes. And again, I appreciate the season not harping on the competition or rivalry aspect of the Ring game and having the Gozyus actually working as a team and becoming friends or at least get closer with each other. It’s a huge relief for me personally.

Elsewhere, we got a little scene at the No One castle which I did not realize was a big ring box lolol. And Hoeru really does love smoking or sucking on flowers. Is that just a quirky thing or is it plot related? Lolol I have no idea!

But overall, this was just a fun and thoroughly enjoyable episode. Really rooting for the season to maintain this great momentum.
