Recap: No.1 Sentai Gozyuger, Episode 5 – Recover Your Soul! Don’t Let Your Troubles Get in the Way

Sumino goes on a three-person date with two guys in order to get information on the kidnapping her little sister Oto. She uses a cute act in order to wrap the two guys around her ring finger. And she literally takes their hands in order to use her ring to read their minds. When she hears they have nothing to offer, she ditches them.

Prime Minster Tokonatsu warns her she’s again taking a dangerous approach, especially when she can’t Engage. But Sumino says she will do anything to find her sister.

PM Tokonatsu understands, especially since this is a temporary alliance between them anyway. To apologize, he gives her a Ring. She vows to collect all the rings for Oto.

The two guys leave the restaurant when Sumino disappears. One of them wishes he could have a girl like Sumino be interested in him. So the NoWan Nosy No.1 engulfs him.

Sumino heads to the café where the guys are hanging out and she asks if she can join their group. She admits she wants revenge against the person who kidnapped her little sister eight years ago. She started as a cop, but was fired for being reckless. That’s why she became a private investigator.

And that’s why she wants the Rings. But enough of that. Hoeru smells a NoWan.

Hoeru, Rikuo, Ryugi and Sumino head out to face Nosy No.1 who challenges them to a busybody-off. He first takes on Rikuo and Ryugi who just draw on him. The NoWan says fulfilling someone’s wishes is just being kind, not meddling. He drops a huge box of autographed books onto them as an example of true meddling.

Kinjiro comes running in his best party people outfit carrying a CD player in which he tries to play a cassette tape. But the NoWan says that him being noisy is not nosy and he wraps his face in tentacles.

Sumino pepper sprays Hoeru and proceeds to take all the guys’ rings and runs away. The NoWan thinks that is peak nosy busybody meddlesome behavior. The guys tell Hoeru to chase after her.

Sumino comes across a little soccer boy who scrapes his knee. Hoeru watches as Sumino puts an encouraging bandage on it before sending the boy away.

Hoeru demands she hand his Ring back. She tosses a fake one for him to chase after so she can get away. She ends up running into a warehouse where she is followed by Aryees. She tries, but again is unable to henshin.

Hoeru arrives and quickly takes on the Aryees, seeing that Sumino can’t Engage. He tells her to get to safety, but she reminds him that he doesn’t have his Ring. He says he’ll get it back, but this takes priority right now.

The NoWan chains Hoeru to the post. He pulls out Oto’s headband. He says being the No.1 nosy busybody makes it easy to look into Sumino’s background and retrieve evidence like this. He says it is covered in the culprit’s fingerprints.

Sumino demands he hand it over. But the NoWan says that would just be a kind gesture. Instead. He wants her to kill Hoeru in exchange for the headband. Plus, it will help her get rid of her competition too, he says.

Sumino thinks about it. But The NoWan threatens to burn the headband. She turns to Hoeru and says she has no grudge against him. Hoeru tells her to go ahead and kill him. Sumino says she will not hesitate to do anything that will get her sister back.

But Hoeru asks what her true dream is. He knows the real her is the one who writes encouraging messages on bandages for little kids. She flashes back to Oto calling her a busybody. But Sumino says she just wants to be a cop so she can save and protect people, bring them happiness.

Sumino chops off Hoeru’s chains. The NoWan burns the headband. But Sumino says she will save Oto herself without his meddling.

Sumino locks her ring in and she is able to Engage for the first time. She henshins to Gozyu Unicorn and battles the NoWan. She uses her mind reading Ring power to counter the NoWan’s attacks.

The boys arrive and she hands them back their Rings, but promises to take them fair and square later on. The guys henshin. The NoWan summons Aryee on the ground and Gold Aryee Maji Gire to pilot a Dress Guard.

Grandpa Kinjiro says to leave the big guy to him. He hops in Tega Sword Green as the others take on the Aryees and the NoWan. Kinjiro picks the robo up and takes their battle to the mountains to avoid inconveniencing the city. He uses a Cupid Arrow Eagle Arrow Shoot finisher.

Meanwhile, Sumino uses Ryusoulger Ring to uphenshin and finishes the NoWan off for good after saving the guy from inside.

Back at the café, Sumino says she has not given up on revenge. But she will still pursue her dream as well. The only clue she has is that the culprit had grey eyes. She vows to catch them and make them pay.

Outside, Rikuo is signing autographs for fans. He is impressed that they have old photos of him. But they say they just love his grey eyes era.

Episode Thoughts

Lol okay, we don’t actually think Rikuo had anything to do with it, now do we? lol

Anyway, this was a good episode. Definitely more of the vibe I would prefer. Again, a good balance of the goofy and the serious. Maybe not as great as the last episode. But a bit better than episodes two and three I think.

A good episode to learn about Sumino. I will admit, I was very skeptical at the start of the episode with her personality. But thankfully it was just part of her act. I don’t know if I could deal with her acting so forced like that all season lol

So we already knew she wants to find her missing sister. So no surprise there. And her even considering killing Hoeru, even if just for a second, was also not that surprising considering the short scenes we’ve had with her and the prime minister.

But of course, she’s not without conscience. And it was a great way to also introduce her dream of being a police officer.

The thing with Rikuo at the end and even the simple fact that Sumino’s little sister might have been kidnapped suggests that the season will certainly touch upon more serious ideas alongside the anniversary goofiness. So again, it’s just about the show needing to find that good balance.

That said, I think our party people Grandpa Kinjiro might become my favorite Gozyu. He’s hilarious! And I think I might enjoy the show playing around with his age during the season. I will admit though, I shed a tear when Sumino mentioned she hadn’t seen a cassette in real life before. My goodness. I’m that old. lol

So now it’s great to have the five of them together. I’m looking forward to seeing the team dynamics develop. And there’s definitely plenty of room for the show to work with in terms of story.

Overall, a solid episode. Definitely better than the middle two so far. Hope they can continue this upward trajectory!
