Episode Thoughts

I’ll have a full Season Wrap-Up tomorrow. So let’s just talk about this finale and perhaps this Final Lap as a whole. (And also to get some criticisms out of the way so we can be more overly positive in the Wrap-Up lol)

As good as it was, I think this finale kind of highlighted how rushed this Final Lap has been. Of course, one of the biggest themes, if not the main theme of the season was about being able to grab hold of your own wheel. And a big part of this episode hangs on the idea of Grantu giving up control of his wheel to Spindo and Spindo taking control of his own wheel because of his past experience and growing up and trash planets and all that.

As emotional and exciting as it was for the Boonboomgers to be powered by the smiles and cheers of the people, Spindo’s own story and motivation for his villainy felt a bit flat and hollow. Or maybe more accurately, it felt underdeveloped. Which, in a season with well-developed characters and overall story, it just appears even more glaring.

The show needed to expand on the idea of letting someone take over your wheel for a time or something. Having someone give you driving lessons to help guide you until you can take control of the wheel later on, if we are to continue with the driving analogies. Lol

Just like MadRex did for the Sanseaters, apparently Spindo did for Grantu. But I don’t think the show gave us enough about them and especially Spindo to truly have as big an impact as possible here. He was merely a foe for the Boonboomgers to defeat rather than a full character.

That said, the episode was at its strongest when it focused on the Boonboomgers and their resolve and their bonds with each other. The teamwork and friendship, the hallmarks of Super Sentai, resonate so much. The best heroic qualities you can get on Sentai. And Boonboomger effortlessly delivered that part of the episode and story at least.

And that’s thanks to having a full season of great character-driven story. The finale would’ve absolutely fallen flat without that strong foundation having been set across 47 episodes.

But again, the episode just highlighted the fact that these characters and this story deserved a lot more time. They could easily fill more episodes with the Boonbooms traveling to different planets to liberate them. More on Sakito delivering smiles for the kids while the others are way. Shirabe ascending to the becoming director of the ISA and working to reform the agency.

All of these stories and more deserved to be told. But the season was just so full that they had to squeeze as much as they could in these final episodes.

But nevertheless, this was still an exciting and emotional episode and a solid way to end this wonderful season. Excellent action sequences. Fun final scenes.

My Season Wrap-up will be posted tonight after midnight PT. And my updated Sentai rankings possibly Thursday.

But bottomline is Boonboomger has been an overall amazing season that has secured a close to top spot on my Sentai list.

Thank you to the entire cast and crew for a fun year. And congratulations on the amazing season!

  1. What are your thoughts on Boonboomger VS King Ohger announcement?

I ask because it’s interesting to have a typical sentai season teaming up with a more serialised season and the princess from the movie is returning

    1. I haven’t seen what the story is about, but I guess the movie picks up with the Boonbooms heading to the princess’ planet and then Ohgers get involved when one of the Jesters comes back or something. I dunno. lol But that sounds alright.

  2. They weren’t able to give the final blow to “Michael Jackson”, he left his way. 🙂
And Maimi Baisu was truly vicious, but in a good way. (althought there were some hints indicating she was maybe a double/triple agent).

  3. Exciting finale! Really great battle scenes. And a happy ending, albeit open ended. Hope there are a lot of post-season movies and TTFC specials etc.

Looking forward to your season wrap-up!
