Recap: Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger, Episode 42 – Holy Night Presents

As Spindo watches the Christmas festivities on Earth, Maimi explains all about the holiday and the intriguing figure known as Santa Claus. Spindo tells Grantu to bring Santa Claus to him.

Back in Tokyo, Sakito and Byundi watch as the Sanseaters are selling Santa outfits so anyone can be Santa today. Sakito explains to Byundi that there is only one real Santa Claus.

Grantu contacts the Sanseaters and orders them to bring Santa to Spindo. Ittasha keys in a trash bin to bring about Gomi Bako Gurma and they order him to capture Santa.

At the Garage, Shirabe daydreams of giving BunBun a nice Christmas present and getting a hug from him in return.

BunBun serves her a special Christmas curry which is actually just the regular curry with a Santa flag planted in the rice. BunBun says Santa Claus is the ultimate deliveryman.

Later, Shirabe is sad she was unable to give BunBun his present. But she wonders where in the world the real Santa is right now. Even the ISA cannot locate him.

Downtown, Mira has Genba and Shashiro helping her pass out Christmas treats to the children. Shashiro is a bit annoyed having to do this all while dressed as a reindeer, but he puts on a smile for the childrens.

Meanwhile, the Sanseaters are growing impatient with the Kurumaju. Dekotorade suggests they bring Ittasha, who is dressed as Santa, to Spindo instead so they can avoid getting yelled at.

But the Kurumaju appears, sees her dressed as Santa and sucks her in only to spit her back out again, torn up like trash.

Taiya is on his way to deliver some books as Christmas presents for the children. But he sees the Sanseaters nearby and approaches them. Just then, Ittasha begins to cry and Taiya is transported into a theater where he watches her sing a song about her difficult life. She is soon joined by Sarah and Lavinia, the two cats on her shoulders, who sing about karma and how the underdogs at the bottom now will eventually find themselves at the top in the future.

Taiya applaud as he is touched by the message of Ittasha’s performance and tells her that he could hear the screams of her heart.

Ittasha asks if he could deliver Santa to them as soon as possible. But Taiya says that is not possible since today is the day when Santa is most busy delivering presents to kids all over the world. But what he can deliver is a nice children’s book. He gives Ittasha a copy of The Two Little Cats and Santa Claus as a Christmas present.

Ittasha beams at Taiya’s smile and appreciates receiving her very first Christmas present.

Meanwhile, the Kurumaju continues rampaging, catching and then spitting out anyone dressed as Santa.

The Boonbooms arrive and the Kurumaju swallows Mira before spitting her out as well. When Taiya and Sakito arrive, the Boonbooms henshin. Nejiretta join the battle. But the Kurumaju’s crows end up attacking everyone indiscriminately.

The Kurumaju spots the Sanseaters and sucks up Ittasha’s book before spitting it out, ruined. Ittasha cannot believe it. She kicks the Kurumaju down the stairs and says she will not forgive him for tearing up her present and her heart.

Ittasha tells the Boonboomgers to finish the Kurumaju off. She will not stand for suck sneaky tactics to collect Gassholin as it is against her underdog policy.

The Boonbooms are a bit confused. But they know what they have to do. Ittasha gets them to go Champion and she helps power Taiya up with some cat power. Taiya is able to deliver a cat-infused Champion Drive finisher at the Kurumaju.

Yaruka embiggens the Kurumaju and the Boonbooms hop into Boonbomger Robo Champion. Taiya calls on Boonboom Leon and he uphenshins to 119. That allows them to upgatti into Boonboomger Christmas Combination Special. And with a Bakuage Merry Christmas Edition attack, the Kurumaju is trashed for good.

Spindo laughs and warns the Boonbooms to be merry while they still can.

BunBun feels like the real Santa-san. But the real Santa Claus appears and gives BunBun a nice hat. He joins Taiya in the cockpit and they work together to finish the deliveries around Tokyo.

Dekotorade and Yaruka get some delicious food.

Sakito and Byundi get a boot full of treats. Sleeping children get wrapped presents by the side. And a sleeping Ittasha gets a brand new copy of her book.

Episode Thoughts

Merry Christmas!

Another break in the action, so to speak. But certainly a welcome episode for the holiday! Definitely a great Christmas treat. And a Christmas episode that actually incorporates the requisite visit by Santa Claus in a way that doesn’t feel too contrived. Lol

I think the big highlight though was Ittasha’s Princess Sarah performance. Completely unexpected and at first a bit strange. But as it progressed, it offered up a nice message of course. A wonderful performance by Nana Mizuki, I assume. A beautiful voice. And perfectly suited to the musical performance.

Better than Wicked, the movie, to be honest. Hehe

From a story standpoint, I think the performance goes a long way in helping to build the Sanseaters’ redemption resume. It’s really been great to watch how the season has developed the Sanseaters as their own characters. And so this episode where they enjoy the Christmas spirit and hearing Ittasha’s “cries” also feels natural and earned.

Speaking of, it also helped to build up Taiya’s character. Again, him responding to the cries of other people when his own cries perhaps were not heard as he was growing up. I really hope we do get to learn more about that as we head to the finale.

Fun moment between Shirabe and BunBun. And seeing reindeer Shashiro was cute too. Hehe.

I also liked Sakito teaching Byundi a bit about Christmas and Santa Claus too since the aliens wouldn’t know much. As we also saw Spindo and Grantu needing a quick lesson as well.

Referring to Santa as the ultimate deliveryman was also something I never thought of until watching this episode. He really is, isn’t he? And the Boonbooms are the perfect helpers of course! Hehe.

Meanwhile, even in the Christmas greeting, Sakito is still in a little circle. Huhu

I need to see them all in the same physical location performance the dance at least once before the end of the season! (Not just plugged in like in this episode lol) That would be a great, late Christmas present for us. Hehe

Overall, a very fun Christmas episode from the Boonbooms. But I certainly expect we get back to the drama next week!
