Leg 24.12 – “I don’t know what country this is anymore.”

TARPHDME24

Teams return to Paris during the Pit Stop where they will begin this Leg at Gare de L’est. The first clue tells teams to catch a train from this station to Strasbourg.

TARPHDME24

Upon arrival, teams must choose a 2024 Kia Niro Hybrid and find the location of the world’s largest cuckoo clock: Triberg, Germany.

TARPHDME24

Teams will find the next clue in front of the clock. That clue reveals the Road Block: Who can score a timely triumph?

TARPHDME24

Triberg is famous for its cuckoo clock production and is home to some of the largest cuckoo clocks in the world.

TARPHDME24

For this Road Block, teams will head to Oli’s Schnitzstube where they must correctly build a cuckoo clock using traditional parts and matching a provided example of the forest life depicted in its carved design. When the clock’s mechanical components are in place and the cuckoo sound is heard, they will receive the next clue. They will also receive their cuckoo clock after the Race!

Teams will be advised to complete this Road Block as quickly as possible.

TARPHDME24

The next clue directs teams to Triberg Waterfalls.

TARPHDME24

And that clue tells teams to drive to Abbey of St. Gall in St. Gallen, Switzerland!

Teams must find accommodations for the night before departing tomorrow from this Route Marker in the order according to how fast teams completed the cuckoo clock Road Block! Teams will only know what time they will depart in the morning from a list in front of the abbey.

TARPHDME24

Departures will begin at 5:30am and teams will depart five minutes apart. They will now drive themselves to Schaanwald Railway Station in Liechtenstein!

TARPHDME24

Liechtenstein is one of the smallest countries in the world. It is the sixth-smallest by total area. Teams will use their Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and Samsung Galaxy Smartwatch to measure the length of the country! While riding motorized bicycles, teams will use the Samsung Health app to track their time and distance biking from Schaanwald to Balzers. When they can give the correct distance, they will receive the next clue.

TARPHDME24

Upon arrival in Balzers, teams must find Guterberg Castle where they will find another Road Block: Who can answer the alpine call?

TARPHDME24

For this Road Block, teams will learn how to properly play an alphorn. Teams must learn and then properly perform a short piece to receive the next clue.

TARPHDME24

Teams will take a bus back to Schaanwald and hop back into their Kias to drive to the Geigenbaumuseum in Mittenwald, Germany! And here, they will find yet another Road Block! Who wants to fiddle around?

TARPHDME24

Mittenwald is renowned worldwide for its violin-making tradition. The town’s craftsmen have been producing high-quality violins for centuries and their instruments are prized by musicians around the globe. For this Road Block, teams will learn how to properly assemble a violin. When their violin is approved, they will get the next clue.

And that clue reveals the Detour: Dough-Knot or Better Butter.

TARPHDME24

In Dough-Knot, teams must head to this bakery in Fussen and learn how to and properly make Brezn or Bavarian pretzels. Teams must make a total of 30 pretzels and be approved by the baker to receive next clue.

TARPHDME24

In Better Butter, teams must head to this dairy farm in Schwangau. They will first milk a cow up to a line in a pitcher and then successfully churn butter to receive the next clue.

TARPHDME24

After the Detour, teams must drive to Neuschwanstein Castle and search the castle for their next clue. Which is the fourth Road Block of the Leg! Who has soaring skills?

TARPHDME24

Falconry is a practice with a rich history, especially in Europe, where it was historically associated with nobility and royalty. Bavaria and the Black Forest, known for their vast forests and rich wildlife, provided an ideal environment for falconry. Today, teams will get to experience this art of training birds of prey.

Teams must search the nearby fields and learn how to properly handle and train a falcon. Teams must learn how to safely handle the falcon including putting on the jesses, managing the bird on the glove and understanding basic commands. They must then participate in a mock hunting scenario where they will guide the bird along a specific path and obstacle course. When the falcon has delivered their clue, teams can now…

TARPHDME24

…run to the Pit Stop! The grounds near Neuschwanstein Castle.

The first team to check-in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

The last team to check-in WILL be eliminated.

“Director’s” Commentary

This is an insane Leg. An overly ambitious, probably impossible Leg. Really, it’s probably best for a MegaLeg or Super Leg. Or just two Legs altogether. But let’s try to squeeze everything here!

So I have had a Bavaria Leg on the shortlist for a long time. I think traveling through this storybook land would make for a stunning Leg. But as I was Google scouting, I found so many things that could be done on this potential Leg that I just had to throw it all in! lol

First up, we will set it up so teams leave Paris and arrive in Triberg by late morning. Since this will be a task before an overnight rest, we have to make this Road Block consequential. So making it timed to determine morning departure is good. Otherwise, this would just be a normal Road Block on a Leg without the overnight rest. A cuckoo clock task is definitely a must here though.

The Triberg Waterfalls is just an extra Route Marker at a beautiful location before we have teams drive to St. Gallen. I think we could have an entire Leg within an hour radius of Triberg. But the rest of this Leg takes place farther east. So having the overnight rest in St. Gallen, which is on the way, is partly so we can add another country to brag about in this Leg lol. St. Gallen probably can host its own Leg as well.

Then when I found Liechtenstein is just an hour away, I thought, what the heck, let’s just do it! Lolol The measuring task is inspired by TAR18 of course. But I thought it would be a perfect spot for our sponsor/partner Samsung as well! Hehe

One thing we can hope for is teams don’t know which train station to go to in Schaanwald. The train station here in this Leg is actually not used anymore! So teams getting confused and going to one of the active train stations could be another challenge!

The alphorn task can be skipped. But we’ll keep it in. It can be a fun, but short task. And good to at least have one more task in the country.

The bus back to Schaanwald is a logistical necessity of course.

Then we have the Road Block in Mittenwald. Violins are known from here. So it definitely needs to be a task.

The Detour can be skipped, but I think a nice homey and village-focused pair of tasks is needed for this storybook area. And I think both tasks are good here.

Finally, we have teams go to Neuschwanstein Castle. We need to have a castle on this Leg of course. And when I saw the potential for falconry here, I thought why not have it as the final task of this Leg.

Time-wise, it might be evening by the time teams reach here. So I don’t know if you can do falconry in the dark or something. But having a nighttime Pit Stop at Neuschwanstein Castle would be stunning!

When I did the Race Tracker for this Leg though, teams could end the Leg by around 4pm or 5pm. And that’s with extra allowance for each task and the drives. So maybe not as long as you’d think,

Overall, a very full and hectic Leg. But with TARPHDME, anything is possible! Hehehe
