Leg 24.04 – “I’m longan for a clue.”
Twelve teams begin the 4th Leg of the Race bright and early at Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai. The first clue tells teams to choose a songthaew and make their way to Wat Phra That Hariphunchai.
Wat Phra That Hariphunchai is a revered Buddhist temple here in Lamphun with origins dating back to the 9th and 11th century. Today, teams will participate in the lantern festival by making their own lantern.
They must then search the thousands of lanterns for one of 15 that contain a Race flag. They must retrieve that lantern and replace it with the one they made themselves. They will then exchange their flagged lantern for the next clue.
That clue directs teams to this Local Market. Teams will be given a list of ingredients which they must purchase at this local market. Once they have their ingredients checked, they will receive the next clue. They must keep these ingredients with them until further notice.
The next clue reveals the Detour: Silk or Silver.
Lamphun textiles and silk are renowned for their exquisite craftsmanship and are examples of the rich cultural heritage of this area. In Silk, teams will learn how to use traditional weaving techniques to create a small piece of silk fabric. They must then learn traditional dyeing techniques to match and recreate the colors of the fabric to receive the next clue.
Lamphun is renowned for its silver craftsmanship, which has been passed down through generations of the region’s Lanna culture. In Silver, teams will use hand tools to engrave intricate designs into silver surfaces according to specific patterns and textures. When teams are able to correctly make three pieces, they will receive the next clue.
This is also the Trigger Point. If an equal number (6) of teams choose each side of the Detour, the U-Turn or Yield will be activated on the next Leg.
After the Detour, teams will now make their way to this local home where they will encounter a Double Road Block: Steam or Savor.
Khao Pook Nga is a delicious traditional dish from this northern region of Thailand. This dish, made with sticky rice, is often mixed with other savory ingredients such as ground meat, herbs and spices. The team member who will Steam will learn how to and then successfully make the delicious treat in various versions using the ingredients they purchased earlier as well as others that will be provided for them. The team member who will Savor will then try the different versions and must identify the different ingredients in each. Once they are able to do so, they will receive the next clue.
That clue points teams to this longan orchard for the Road Block: Who’s longing for longan?
Longans are a significant part of this region’s agriculture where the climate is best suited for the delicious fruit. For this Road Block, teams must harvest enough longans to fill their basket. When filled, teams will get the final clue of the Leg.
And that clue directs teams to the Pit Stop, the home of Achi Jittawisut’s parents.
The first team to check-in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.
The last team to check-in here WILL be eliminated.
“Director’s” Commentary
So this Leg is partly grown out of having another atypical Thailand Leg. But also inspired by the Thai adaptation of Cherry Magic. hehe.
Basically, I think it was the finale of the series where the main characters visit one of their parents’ home in this area and they had a scene where they were making khao pook nga. So I thought, “That can be a great task!” Hehe. So that’s where the Double Road Block comes from. And also the Pit Stop as well.
So building this Leg around those two Route Markers, I found there’s plenty of potential tasks here in Lamphun.
First, we have the simple lantern task. A bit of a needle in the haystack task. But it should not be that hard. And also it’s the first task of the Leg.
Silk and silver are two of the area’s well-known exports and crafts. So of course we are going to have teams participate in them. I think the silver side of the Detour is very interesting and unique. And both should be tedious work for the teams which is always good.
Finally, the longan Road Block is typical TAR. And this area is also known for their longans so it’s a perfect activity here.
As I said, I have the home from Cherry Magic as the Pit Stop. But a more traditional Pit Stop would be the Nong Lom View Point which includes a really stunning (and long!) staircase to the top. It would be a perfect Pit Stop.
Overall, a pretty straightforward Leg. But the tasks are intensive and immersive. And it really showcases this area’s local culture and everyday life. I think TAR doesn’t really do much of that these days anymore as the various series focus on more touristy, well-trodden path now.
