Thursday Tunes, October 17, 2024 – “Paalam Na” by 1st.One

When I first listened to 1st.One’s new track “Paalam Na”, I liked it, but I wasn’t sure if I loved it. Though I did mention that once the music video for it would be released, I “will probably grow to love it.”

Well, that didn’t happen.

Because the music video was only just released to YouTube yesterday, but it was only a few days after my first listen of the track back in August that I actually did end up loving the track! It actually grew on my quite quickly. And so much so that it has been on regular repeat for me since then! In an edit to my original post, I already said that it would likely find a spot on my year-end favorites list. And that is even more true now a couple of weeks later.

So I’ve been looking forward to the music video. Finally, it’s here!

Simply put, it’s an amazing video for an amazing song! There are honestly times when music videos unfortunately don’t rise to the level that a song deserves. They can be underwhelming or something’s off or missing. But that’s definitely not the case for “Paalam Na”.

With the rise of P-pop, that’s the interesting experience I’ve had. In the last decade, I’ve grown used to K-pop and music videos being my first experience with any new music release. For P-pop (and pop music in general around the world, I think), songs are usually released before any kind of music video or even visualizer other than simple lyric videos.

And so sometimes, some music videos haven’t risen to my expectations for songs that I already liked and enjoyed. And, fairly or not, it affects my continued enjoyment of that song.

But I am so happy and excited that “Paalam Na” definitely did not disappoint. In fact, it’s quite stunning!

The National Museum of Natural History is itself a stunning location. And it is paired with breathtaking views on Mt. Gulugod Baboy. Director Lua Swish makes great use of both locations to highlight and showcase the group’s performance and overflowing charisma. The group’s visuals are so good and the styling is on point.

Watching all of the group’s TikToks featuring the point dance of the song since its release also made me excited to see the full choreography. And the music video highlights that excellent and clever choreography. I think one of my favorite choreographies in P-pop or K-pop in a while!

Everything just comes together in this music video. And I hope it helps to draw more eyes and ears to this excellent song and performance from 1st.One!
