The title A Breeze of Love (일기예보적연애) couldn’t be any more perfect for this series. This Korean BL drama is indeed a breezy, wistful and warm series about a love, friendship and self-discovery. A charming cast, relatable story and welcome sincerity make for a very worthy watch and ultimately satisfying experience.
A Breeze of Love tells the story of college students Ban Dong Wook (Shin Jeong You) and Lee Do Hyun (Woo Ji Han) who meet again for the first time since high school. But that reunion stirs up some painful memories.
Dong Wook suffers from insomnia and somehow Do Hyun provides relief. When the two become part of the same basketball team, they must navigate their complex relationship and sort out their complicated feelings for each other.
The series follows that journey with both of them learning the importance of communication, understanding and self-discovery as well as exploring the many highs and lows of friendship and growing up.
Though this is another case of wishing we could spend more time with these characters, A Breeze of Love is able to pack a lot of depth and emotional punch in that time with Dong Wook, Do Hyun and their friends Seung Hoo (Kim Hyun Jae) and Hye In (Lee Seo Bin).
The series’ eight episodes, each about 20 minutes each, are actually plotted out very well. Especially compared to many similar webseries. Moving along at a steady pace, the series is able to peel back the many layers of Dong Wook and Do Hyun’s story in a way that is engaging and purposeful.
Even if the story can feel familiar at some points, you feel yourself hanging on to every minute. This is very much a character-driven story and the cast, especially Shin Jeong You and Woo Ji Han, deliver natural performances that immediately draw you in. Both charming and charismatic, they are able to make both Dong Wook and Do Hyun approachable characters.
When we first meet them and begin to understand their relationship, they make the characters earnest and a bit mysterious. As the characters begin to open up to each other and to us the audience, it is such a fulfilling experience to see that shift in their performances. A lot of great nuance that really goes a long way into adding depth and sincerity to the characters and the story.
Kim Hyun Jae and Lee Seo Bin also deliver great supporting performances. And again, it would have been wonderful if we got to spend more time with all four of these strong, well-developed characters. The series accomplishes so much in such a short amount of time.
The strong narrative and strong performances are supported by beautiful cinematography. There is a good balance between the heavier moments and the more lighthearted moments. The dreamlike, storybook visuals add a lot to the overall experience as well, really enhancing the warm story.
Focusing on love, friendships and self-discovery, A Breeze of Love is able to pack in a lot of emotional depth and multi-faceted characters despite its short runtime. Well-paced, welcome sincerity and a strong cast really make this one of the most satisfying Korean BL drama experiences.
