Episode Thoughts

So let me start off by saying that I was definitely prepared for what was to come from this episode because just minutes after the episode first aired, Alisa Sakamaki tweeted this:
https://x.com/alisa2525_10923/status/1824966091455840721
And I had no chance to avoid it. lololol So I already knew what was coming.

Had I not, I would probably be a blubbering mess right now. But that doesn’t mean tears were not shed while watching this episode. Because they definitely were! huhu

The first MaGMCM for me this episode was when Manabe-san and Sawa popped out to defend the AA Gang. And then Ryo came along with Seina. And I really didn’t even like Seina that much during the Romeo & Juliet episodes. But the show used all four of them perfectly in this moment. The same way that they have been able to use Asahi-san and all the other people who have been touched by Houtarou and the Gang and by the Chemies as well.

This all helps to support Houtarou’s Gotcha and the idea of coming together and lifting each other up, whether human or Chemy. That every life holds value.

And of course, what subplot better to serve as the penultimate episode focus than Supana’s climax and in turn Lachesis’ as well.

We’ve seen Supanar’s growth and development through the season. Him being able to overcome the pain and tragedy of his past. Being able to move forward thanks to the positive influence of his new friends, most especially Houtarou. And drawing upon his pain to find courage and strength.

All of this then helping to drive Lachesis forward too.

Now I’m not going to say Gotchard has been perfect. It has done a lot of things so well. Definitely so much more than the recent Kamen Rider seasons. But of course there’s plenty of things I would have loved to have seen the season go deeper into or spend more time on.

One of those things is probably doing more with the Meikoku Sisters and finding their purpose in their doll-turned-human lives. That said, this season has done better with the idea of “What it means to be human?” than some other Kamen Rider and Sentai seasons who have that as a more central theme than Gotchard did.

But the way Gotchard has been able to so tightly weave together all the different threads during this season has really bore the delicious and satisfying fruit that we are enjoying now.

One of the things this season has touched upon is how the best of intentions and ideals can get tarnished by malice and darkness. Just like with the Chemies.

That’s why this penultimate episode focusing mainly on Spanner and Lachesis’s growth works so well. For Lachesis, she is sort of the example of what Atropos and Clotho could have become had they not been blinded and corrupted by the darkness (or the gold, in Atropos’ case lol) She is someone who has been used as a pawn. Tossed around like a rag doll, literally. But when she was able to “see the light,” so to speak, her eyes were opened to something more. And that’s what happened to Atropos and Clotho too, only a bit too late for older sister. Though we’ll see how it goes for Clotho next week.

With Supanar, the pain he’s suffered and the evil that caused it prevented him from being able to grab onto something more positive. Kyoka-san has kept him going all these years. And his new relationships and friendships are what helped him to finally dig deep to find that strength and power he always had.

I think this episode was also a great climax to the contrast between Houtarou and Spanna all season. Houtarou was this naïve, happy-go-lucky, but positive guy with a simple Gotcha. Supanaur was someone who has gone through a lot and knows the dangers and threats of what’s out. A clashing of ideals. But now that they’ve learned from each other and helped lift each other up, of course that results in the strongest power ever.

A very familiar and well-trodden path for many Toei toku. But done so very well here on Gotchard. A very exciting and well-earned debut for Valvarad Kurogane.

Now! To get to the other big MaGMCMs. First of course Supannar’s reflections in the dark leading to his bright light. Very powerful moment!

And then of course, like I said, I already braced myself for Lachesis dying thanks to the tweets from both Alisa Sakamaki and the official Gotchard account. Every time Lachesis stepped forward to shield Spana, I was like “Oh my goodness, this is it!” lol Little did I know that those were all just ploys to set up Gurion shooting Lachesis in the back!

I knew it was coming, yet my jaw (and the tears!) still dropped to the floor right then.

Though I must point out she did not dissolve into shimmering sparkles like the usual final deaths of Toei toku characters. So I’ll hold on to my 0.01% hope for a happy ending lolololol And yes, I know Gurion mentioned how, out of the kindness of his heart, allowed them to mourn and bury her physical body. Lol Thanks Gurion. Lol

Kamen Rider Gotchard Episode 49 Recap

Anyway. My hopeless romantic self enjoys the crumbs of romance Toei toku gives us. And they were able to use the potential romance between Supana and Lachesis to further their characters’ development and the story. It wasn’t just to be cute or whatever. (Even though they were definitely cute lolol) But it was a substantive part of their stories and for the season as a whole too.

Kamen Rider Gotchard Episode 49 Recap

Now for a split second, when Houtarou and Gurion were in the restaurant, I thought Mama Ichinose was going to come in and be like “Oh my goodness, your dad’s home!” lololol Thankfully, that was not the case. Lol I think the show has just dropped that plot point at this point. Though who knows what might happen next week. I don’t really think it’s too important for the endgame of regular series. Perhaps it provides plot for a future movie or TTFC special.

But with Gurion the last Bad standing, I think he does serve as the perfect opposite of Houtarou. So their final battle should be quite satisfying.

#ProtectMamaIchinose!

Overall, this was a great episode. The perfect episode to lead-in to the finale with. Emotional and exciting. It really worked so well. And as has been the case for the season, the pieces just all come together in the right way to result in something really enjoyable and satisfying.

Even with one episode left, I can already say that Gotchard will end up as one of my favorite Kamen Rider seasons in the 13 years I’ve been watching this franchise. Maybe not enough to dethrone my top 2. But definitely up there.

So next week will be a bittersweet experience. But I’m excited for it!

  1. I don’t follow Alisa on X (I will do it once the series is over, like I did for Nashiko Momotsuki once Kiramager was over, because I wanted to avoid the spoils), but I didn’t wait for the subs to be out and watch it raw…
Honestly, during the final minutes, I was like when I watched Kiramager #44 (I had made a parallel yet for previous episode when Atropos was betrayed) and I couldn’t help myself to make a lot of parallels: Lachesis slayed by her own master, dying while she wanted to be loved like Yodonna and the tears she dropped (although I thought more of Yodonna 2 end, when Yodonna discovers joy)… And of course, the hatred I felt for Geryon, similar to the one I felt for Yodon…
Yes, Lachesis’s body didn’t dissolve like Atropos, but let’s not be too optimistic, even though the three sisters should be reunited one last time (from one short moment in the trailer)…
But at least, unlike Yodonna, whose demise was litterally ignored by the Kiramagers, Lachesis passed away surrounded by people who understood her. And honestly, I can understand your feelings, although I didn’t cry (my chest was tightening, though)… All the rest, including Valvarad’s new form, was a detail to me…

Whatever, I hope Geryon will die painfully like he deserves to!

  2. And I thought the season couldn’t make us hate Gurion anymore than it already did…. Killing my favorite character like that. 😡
Although maybe if the main gang manages to obtain the Philosopher’s Stone from Gurion upon his final defeat, a happy ending for the Sisters won’t be out of reach….

I had… mixed feelings about Gigist’s final defeat in this episode. On one hand, it was neat that his ending was a bit “different” compared to the other two original Kings in that he was satisfied with the outcome of his defeat and died content. On the other hand, I was sorta disappointed Houtarou didn’t play an active role in his defeat. I mean, Gigist had already cemented himself as Houtarou’s most personal enemy when he forced him to kill Hopper1. I really enjoyed the rivalry and dynamic the two had based on their opposite views on Chemies. But they didn’t interact at all during this final stretch of episodes. And that’s a shame since I thought Gigist, being the one who created the Chemies with malicious intentions, would’ve logically wound up being the main and final obstacle to Houtarou’s ideal world.
Though to be fair, Gigist didn’t really interact with anyone during this final stretch, not even Supana. He was just… there. I’m not entirely sure what the season’s purpose was in “benching” him until this episode when he was such a menacing, powerful, and smooth-talking threat during the stretch of episodes where he was the one and only main villain.
I thought that Gurion’s revival was gonna be the catalyst for a storyline where Supana briefly joins up with Gigist to become stronger. I really assumed that Gigist was gonna play on Supana’s hatred for Gurion to convince him to take his offer. Y’know, by saying blunt and tempting things along the lines of: “Can you honestly live with yourself knowing that the monster who killed your parents is walking free, and you’re too weak to do anything about it?” or “Eliminating Gurion with your own strength is the only way to properly honor your parents’ sacrifice.”

Besides that though, the confrontation between Gurion and Houtarou in the restaurant did manage to convince me that Gurion was a suitable final villain for the season. I really enjoyed how Houtarou was fully ready to “get serious” when he thought Gurion hurt his mother.
I mean sure, I would’ve preferred it if Gurion was the debut opponent for Supana’s Final Form instead of Gigist, and that the two would have a climactic 1-on-1 battle to settle the score between them for good. But I think the scene with Houtarou and Gurion reestablished how Gurion is also a good Evil Counterpart for Houtarou. Gurion wanting to permanently freeze the world in gold to give it “worth” of course directly contrasts Houtarou’s beliefs of moving forward in life and valuing the “worth” of every being’s hopes and dreams. That, along with how Gurion places absolutely no “worth” on things like bonds and family. Despite creating several physically immortal Homunculi like himself, Gurion only saw them as pawns and never as equals and as his own family, even callously discarding the one who was unconditionally loyal to him and viewed him as her father.

    1. Those are great points.

I guess for the Supana vs Gigist face off, it just had to do with the black flames. And how both saw that power differently I guess. Even with Supana’s past, I think he more developed a cynical view of alchemy and too narrow-minded. But thanks to his new friends and realizing what his parents fought for, he was enlightened about alchemy and Chemies.

The Houtarou vs Gurion face off I think can focus on how Gurion selfishly uses whoever and whatever to achieve his goals. While Houtarou, as has been the case all season, values each life and believes the bonds that they can form with each other are the ultimate Gotcha. Not some selfish gold world lol

      1. You know, I honestly thought Gigist, with the greater amount of focus placed on him compared to the other Kings, would have wound up being revealed as the Daybreak Alchemist from the fairytale, the one who had a Hopper1-like companion at his side and was said to be the strongest alchemist ever known. It would have been neat if the season “took a page” out of the most well-regarded aspect of the Sentai season Goseiger, which was its final villain Brajira and his twisted version of “saving the Earth.” Brajira, of course, had fully and genuinely deluded himself into thinking he was a hero despite murdering his teammates to become the strongest Gosei Angel and happily working with the previous 3 villain factions while having no moral objections to any of their plans. Maybe they could have done something similar with Gigist and had his end goal be him taking an alchemist’s duty of protecting and saving the world to its most extreme and unhinged. As I’ve said, I feel Gigist had a lot more potential as a Final Boss than Gurion, who has already had more than enough “time to shine.”
And in hindsight, as good as the two episodes were on their own, I wish the season would have cut Episodes 42-43. That way, we would have gotten the two parter centering around Kajiki as Episodes 42-43 instead, and the whole storyline about everyone regaining their memories would have occurred earlier. As a result, the beginning of the “masquerade” being blown open and Supana’s duel with Houtarou would have been Episodes 44-45. Rinne gaining her Final Form and Gaeliyah and Atropos dying would have been Episode 46. This episode would have been Episode 47, though instead of Gigist being Supana’s opponent, I would have of course had it be Gurion. Maybe Supana could have obtained his Final Form in the midst of preventing Gurion from disposing of his “defective doll” Lachesis, which would end in him defeating Gurion for good not out of hate or vengeance for his parents’ death but to protect someone new he’s come to care about. And that would leave the final 3 episodes with Gigist empowered by the full Philosopher’s Stone as the Final Boss, with him and his endgame being the final obstacle in the way of Houtarou’s ideal world.

        1. What’s really great (and also can be a hindrance) is Gotchard really has so much possibilities. That they could do so much, but there’s just not enough time. And it’s a rare season where you can’t point to specific parts that should have been done differently to drastically change it for the better. It’s been great and strong as it is, but could have been even more amazing with some tweaks here and there. But again still, very good with what they did. Really hoping though that they still have a big and surprising finale.
