Recap: Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, Episode 9 – Master Plan
Zayto, Aiyon and Solon fill Billy in on Zayto’s predicament. Zayto says he is only back so he could help in the battle against Zedd and he must continue what he is doing and whatever is right for the team. Just then, they get a call from Eltar. But it is Zedd. The Rangers cannot believe their plan to destroy the Tricera statue didn’t release Ollie from evil. And now Mucus and Slyther are going to be punished. Plus, Bajillia is still alive.
In actuality, Ollie is back to normal. He shoots at Zedd and reveals his plans to the Rangers. Zedd orders Ollie to be captured and to cut the feed.
The Rangers are relieved Ollie is back and their plan worked. But Billy says their friends are in grave danger. Zayto says the Morphin Grid cannot be destroyed, but their link can be disconnected. That’s why the Morphin Masters help to balance it. Amelia says he has put his life on the line for them, so they can do the same for him.
Before the Rangers hurry to Eltar, Billy takes Amelia aside. He warns her that Zedd has most likely set a trap for them. The other Rangers are busy dealing with refugees and he too has to leave and fight as well. He suggests Amelia and the others wait until other teams are able to go with them. Otherwise, they will be on their own. Amelia understands, but believes it is worth the risk to rescue their friends and her boyfriend.
Billy understands and says Amelia is an amazing leader of an impressive team. “May the power protect you,” Billy says before he leaves.
The Rangers get to Eltar and they are immediately spotted. The Rangers hop into their Zords. Inkworth embiggens and causes a rainstorm which affects the Megazords. Aiyon is able to stop the rain and they combine into the Ultrazord.
That allows them to destroy Inkworth for good and they head to Zedd’s fortress.
Ollie feels guilty about helping Lord Zedd. Mucus and Slyther try to cheer him up. Ollie thinks Amelia is going to hate him, but they say not to worry.
The Rangers force their way into the fortress. Amelia calls for Ollie as Zayto and Javi free him and Slyther. Amelia smashes the container Mucus is in and she is able to get back to her mushroom form.
The Rangers demorph and Amelia and Ollie share a cheerful reunion. Ollie says Zedd has left with the Master Captivator so they must hurry to stop him from turning into a Morphin Master. Suddenly, the doors to the chamber close and Bajillia appears to them to say the fortress is going to explode and they will die.
The Rangers are not able to teleport out of the chamber.
Zayto reminds Aiyon that he will do what is best for the team. And that means using magic to shield them in a dome to protect them from the explosion.
Zayto collapses and the Morphin Grid appears above them. The Rangers watch as Zayto returns to the Grid. But Aiyon grabs hold of Zayto’s spirit and collapses as the Grid closes.
The Rangers have no time to grieve as they still have a mission to accomplish. They get Aiyon back to the ship so Solon can help. But they also need to think things through before confronting Zedd. Ollie has an idea.
The Rangers head to the mountain and Zedd says he is impressed that they were able to escape Bajillia’s trap. The Rangers morph and combine their weapons into a Blaster to shoot at Zedd. He unfortunately just sends the attack right back at them. They call on the zords, but Zedd shoots at them and they explode.
Izzy, Javi and Fern try to keep Zedd busy while Ollie and Amelia try to think of a new strategy.
Just then, Bajillia appears with a camera crew. Scrozzle gets to the Master Captivator and shoots at Zedd, capturing him inside. The Zentinels use the Cosmic Blaster at the Rangers and they are forced to demorph.
Bajillia announces on the live broadcast to the whole galaxy that this has been her plan all along. Zedd was the key. Scrozzle says when the Master Captivator explodes, a wave of pure evil will sweep the universe and purge it of all that is good. Bajillia says those in the arms trade like her will become rich.
Slyther and Mucus tell Solon that they will head over to do what they can to help the others. Solon sends out a call to any Power Rangers who can join in this battle for their lives.
Meanwhile, Bajillia continues to explain how her perfect plan unfolded. And now it is only a few seconds until they unleash the evil wave.
Episode Thoughts
Definitely a big episode. And very much worthy of being a penultimate episode. Or really, the first half of a one-hour finale.
I am actually quite surprised that Bajillia’s the real big bad final boss of this season. But it’s actually also great because it allows this season to stand on its own and not be needlessly tied to MMPR by having Zedd be the final boss.
Cosmic Fury is able to stand on its own without overly relying on nostalgia like other Saban Brands and Hasbro seasons.
And this episode shows that. The biggest and strongest parts of the episode involved this team of Rangers and their relationships and bond. No need to use nostalgia to prop them up.
The action was also very good as well. Both in the fortress chamber as well as on the “mountain”. And again, all of it came together for the perfect penultimate episode/first half of a finale.
