Leg 22.04 – “I want to float with the enemy.”

During the Pit Stop, teams will be driving their 2023 Kia Sportages from The Great Meteoron onto a car ferry that will take them to the Greek island of Corfu.

Teams will start the Leg at the Old Fortress of Corfu.

The first clue directs teams to make their way on foot to Spainada Square where they will find a Road Block… and an Intersection! Who wants to float with the enemy? Teams cannot open the clue until they have officially intersected with another team.

For this Road Block Intersection, teams must simply pair up to complete one of these carnival parade floats. Once the float is approved, they will get the next clue and be separated.

Teams can now collect their same 2023 Kia Sportage and drive to Kaiser’s Bridge in Benitses. Here, teams must pull up one of the buoys attached to a string and keep it until further notice.

The clue attached to the buoy tells teams to drive to Achilleion Palace. Here, teams must search this James Bond filming location for a secret bottle with their next clue inside.

That clue points teams to The Governor in Agios Mathaios. At this olive mill, teams will find the Detour: Farm or Table.

In Farm, teams will follow the production of olive oil. First, teams will head to the olive grove where they will harvest enough to fill a basket. They will then bring the olives to the olive press which they must turn themselves. Once their olives have been pressed, they will receive the next clue.

In Table, teams will learn how to distinguish the different grades of olive oil through flavors, color and texture. Teams will then be quizzed based on random questions they will pick out of a basket and correctly identify the olive oils to receive the next clue.

Teams must now make their way to Corfu Old Town.

Here, teams must choose one of the town’s 17 philharmonic bands who perform on Easter Sunday. After dressing in matching uniforms, they must follow a rudimentary map of the area to find their waiting bandmates. Once they have their full squad who can perform the traditional Easter march, they will receive the next clue.

Teams must now join in traditional Corfu Easter celebrations by delivering 10 clay pots known as botides to specific addresses in the area. Teams must then fill them with water and then hurl the filled pots from the balcony down onto the street in an effort to ward off evil spirits and commemorate the Resurrection of Jesus.

Pieces of their clue will be found in the pieces of their smashed pots.

That clue tells teams to drive to Rovinia Beach Parking. Teams will abandon their cars, then hike to Rovinia Beach, the Pit Stop for this Leg of the Race.

However! Before teams can check in, they must first swim out into the water to retrieve a check-in buoy. Teams must match the buoy with the one they retrieved at the pier. When they have the correct one, they can step on the Mat.

The first team to officially check-in will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

The last team to check-in WILL be eliminated.

“Director’s” Commentary

I think this is a much better Leg than the last one. Much more traditional TAR with lots of great tasks and potential for good competition.

First off, driving during the Pit Stop is just a logistical necessity. Teams need to use the same cars and they have to get from Meteora to Corfu somehow. So just have them drive themselves for fun during the Pit Stop and then continue with the normal staggered Pit Start once everyone is in Corfu.

When I was Google scouting, I thought I saw a parade in Corfu with big floats. But when finalizing this Leg, it apparently didn’t exist. So strange! But anyway, we’ll still have some form of it here.

I decided to make the Road Block an Intersection because decorating a parade float can be kind of boring. But it is a tedious task that might frustrate teams. So having them work with another team should add to the stress hopefully!

The next two Route Markers are just to fill out the Leg. But it was interesting to learn these are James Bond filming locations while I was Google scouting. So we can make some reference to that here. We can even come up with a James Bond-inspired task. But I couldn’t think of one lol

The Detour is simple. Of course we gotta get the Greek olives in somewhere. But what I hope with these two tasks is both are actually difficult and time consuming. We must ensure the Farm side of the Detour is a very long and arduous process. Just completely time consuming. Meanwhile, identifying olive oils by taste especially should prove to be a frustrating challenge for teams. Especially when the questions they will get asked are random.

We want both tasks to take the same amount of LONG time.

Next, I decided to spend some time in Old Town Corfu. It should be a wonderful and picturesque location. And since this season is supposed to be filmed in March-ish, having a lot of Easter and Holy Week tasks is a good and easy thing to do. Especially since many of the season’s destinations have unique Easter traditions.

The highlight of the Leg should be the smashing of the clay pots. What a fun tradition. And it should be a physical one too.

Finally, the extra challenge of hiking and then swimming to the Pit Stop with the buoy should hopefully be tricky and mess up some teams for some great end of Leg drama.

Overall, this might be my favorite Leg of the Race so far. Lots of great possibilities in a beautiful location.
