Episode Thoughts

As much as I’m a bit underwhelmed about the Zenkaiger endgame, I did enjoy this episode. Even if everything feels so rushed. There’s two episodes left, but it feels like there’s a couple more episodes left with all the loose ends that still exist. I guess they’ll be wrapping up those stories either in the next season or in several post-season movies? I dunno. It feels like it. But if that’s the case, there can be a sense of not getting a satisfying ending. Anyway, there’s still next week.

For this episode, it was overall good for what it was.

The two things I liked very much were the Grandma Yacchan-Stacey scene and remembering about the Tojitendo oppressing Kikainoids. At the same, both of these moments reminded me of how disappointed I am at some untapped potential for the season

First with Grandma Yacchan and Stacey. Stacey said he just felt jealous of Kaito having a loving family while he was lonely and suffering under an abusive father. So basically, he saw Grandma Yacchan as a mother figure and that’s that. That’s a nice story. I guess. But it’s certainly underwhelming compared to what the series was leading us on with.

Still, Grandma Yacchan is one of the best parts of Zenkaiger and I really love and appreciate how much she’s been an integral character this season. She very much filled the “mentor” role this season. But even more than that, they were able to take that traditional “mentor” role and give it a warmth that perhaps you don’t normally see on Sentai (or Power Rangers). I think that warmth from her and the found family theme they played around with with the Kikai4 helped carry a lot of the season.

So at the very least, we got some nice character moments fostered by that dynamic and environment. Even including Stacey’s relationship with her as well. Even though, again, I was looking forward to a more soapy explanation for their connection. Lol

It was very interesting to be reminded of Bokkowaus and the Tojitendo having oppressed Kikainoids. I feel like that’s a detail that was forgotten and left back in the first few episodes of the season. I feel like the show could’ve done a lot more with that.

Especially when we got the scenes of Mr. Tako and the other Kikainoids willing to stand up and fight against the Tojitendo. Those scenes were wonderful, exciting and encouraging. Seeing everyone come together to fight the evil power can always be a thrilling finale event. And I hope we see something like that in the next episodes. Especially humans and Kikainoids coming together as well.

And on that note, I’m sad that we didn’t get more of that human-Kikainoid interaction. Seeing these two different groups of people, so to speak, coming together and learning about each other and co-existing with each other, etc. There was also a lot of story left on the table there too.

Instead of some fish out of water stories for the Kikai4, for example, the extent of human-Kikainoid relations was Gaon being obsessed and almost fetishizing humans. Which thankfully, they dropped halfway through the season.

So in two weeks, my season wrap-up will probably be filled with the regrets about all the missed opportunities. This episode was another great example of things the season could’ve done differently. And while there’s a lot of that, I still relatively enjoy the episodes. Even if I might not be overly excited or on the edge of my seat.

I will say that I’m feeling a bit more hopeful about the next season after this past week’s official introduction. So that’s probably going to add to my lack of enthusiasm for Zenkaiger‘s finale. But we’ll see.
