Recap: Power Rangers Dino Fury, Episode 19 – The Makeover
Dr. Akana leads the excavation of Purple Beard’s treasure chest which will be on display at the Pine Ridge museum. The museum’s curator Ms. Cotton is on the air with J-Borg to talk about the potential for the pirate’s legendary talismans to be inside the chest.
Pop Pop saves Ms. Cotton from a falling light and the two share an instant connection. After some punny chit chat, the two of them decide to go out on a date and agree to meet in park in three hours.
Amelia excitedly offers to help her grandfather prepare for it.
Meanwhile, Void Knight is intrigued by the possibly magical talismans. Mucus and Slyther come in with Sporix Beast Boneswitch who has the ability to switch people’s bodies. And he uses Mucus and Slyther as examples before switching them back.
The other Rangers are helping Amelia decide what to dress Pop Pop in for his date. Zayto, however, doesn’t understand why they need to change Pop Pop in order to have someone like him.
The date planning has to be put on hold when Solon detects Boneswitch rampaging at the museum. The Rangers arrive just as Boneswitch slams the treasure chest on the ground when he sees there’s nothing in it.
The Rangers morph. But Boneswitch switches Zayto with Amelia and Ollie with Javi and are all forced to demorph. Izzy and Javi manage to jump out of the way and take on the Hengemen. But the four swapped Rangers are unable to morph so they head back to the command chamber to figure things out.
With only 30 minutes until the big date, Amelia makes Zayto (in her body) give Pop Pop an earpiece so she can tell him what to say during the date. He also gives him a bottle of cologne which he liberally sprays on his face.
Amelia and Zayto watch the picnic date from afar with Amelia coaching her grandfather through it. But a bee lands on Pop Pop’s face because of the cologne and when he tries to slap it, he pops the earpiece out into Ms. Cotton’s broccoli soup and spills it all over his suit. He excuses himself and runs back to the van.
Zayto-as-Amelia tells Pop Pop to just be himself. Though Amelia is initially horrified to see Pop Pop back in his work clothes, Zayto tells her to trust him. Pop Pop and Ms. Cotton actually share much in common and they bond even more over their similar childhoods.
Amelia thanks Zayto for believing in Pop Pop and pointing him in the right direction.
Back at the command chamber, the Rangers realize they just have to switch keys as well. And just in time as Boneswitch pops up downtown. With their own keys, the Rangers are all able to morph. Aiyon charges straight at the Sporix Beast, but Boneswitch swaps him with a pigeon and he has to sit this one out.
Boneswitch embiggens and the Rangers hop into the Megazord to slice his horns off. Turns out that’s the source of his power and the Rangers are back in their own bodies. They swap their keys back and morph. Aiyon joins them back in the cockpit and summons Mosa Zord to help them defeat Boneswitch for good. Void Knight is able to collect the Sporix blob.
Amelia visits Pop Pop who now has a job at the museum. She apologizes for trying to change him into something he is not, but he says it’s alright.
Anyway, Ms. Cotton and Dr. Akana come by to see Pop Pop has figured out the chest pieces have a drawing of Purple Beard and his talismans look like Ranger Keys. A map shows they are hidden at Dinohenge. Amelia says she’ll inform the Rangers.
Ms. Cotton gives Pop Pop a kiss on the cheek.
Later, Dr. Akana, Ms. Cotton and Pop Pop head to Dinohenge to meet with the Rangers and they are able to find a buried chest with two new Keys inside.
Another solid episode. A pretty common theme for the plot, but it was very well done. It was nice to see Pop Pop and Dr. Akana very much involved in the plot. And Ms. Cotton is a nice addition to the potential recurring cast of the season. They make a wonderful couple.
The Lesson of the Week about being yourself and not changing who you are just to impress other people was fine. And again, it was executed well. They didn’t go in depth or anything and it was all wrapped up neatly (and quickly), but it got the message across in an easy and relatively enjoyable way.
Body swap episodes are annual traditions of course. But they didn’t really do much in terms of playing up the novelty of such a situation. Especially when the episode had other things to focus on. I don’t even think they included it just to match with the Ryusoulger footage, but just to match the MOTW’s motif.
Anyway, a body swap episode can feel repetitive, but I kinda wanted to see a traditional one here. Especially since the season isn’t doing much with the Rafkonians being fish out of water anyway.
The talismans aka Ranger Keys was an alright extra plot point. And perhaps it carries over into the next episode. So with that, it’s the kind of serialized storytelling that makes you want to watch the next episode instead of everything being wrapped up in this one. Especially as we’re nearing the MIDseason finale.
Overall, a very fun and enjoyable episode.
