Penthouse Season 3 Episode 14 Finale Recap and Review

Episode Thoughts

So, I know many people are going to absolutely hate this finale because most people want the beautiful, no loose ends ending. But I honestly thought this was a great finale. I had wondered what kinds of explosive twists would happen in this final episode after they seemingly exhausted all the shocks in Episodes 12 and 13. But it turns out, it wouldn’t be explosive shockers, but actually emotional ones.

This episode certainly wrapped some loose ends (left others wide open) and worked to do so in a way that was like the calm after the storm. And they still managed to include a pretty unexpected twist. Maybe one of the biggest twists of the entire series.

And that twist being that there actually was no twist. Su Ryeon did indeed die. And she committed suicide at that. When Su Ryeon’s ghost first appeared in the audience, I was ready to accept that it was her plan to just get Seo Jin convicted and she’s been in hiding all this time.

But at the same time, framing Seo Jin and then turning up alive would negate everything and Seo Jin would just walk free. So sacrificing herself would at least bring justice for Yoon Hee’s death.

And again, Yoon Hee’s death is probably the biggest shock for me in season three, if not the entire series. I still cannot believe they actually killed her off that soon. At the time, it wasn’t shocking because we knew, as loyal viewers of Penthouse, that she would most likely end up alive sooner or later. But when the episodes flew by with no Yoon Hee resurrection, it really got me so confused and surprised.

Really, my main thought was that Eugene is one of the three lead actresses of the series. And Yoon Hee is obviously one of the biggest drivers of story. So I didn’t think her relevance to the story would just end there. But it kinda did. It’s really fascinating to look back and process that moment.

At the same time though, without Yoon Hee’s death, there’s no reason for Seo Jin to go to jail. No evidence for any of her other crimes. So it would seem like they needed to kill Yoon Hee to justify Seo Jin’s ultimate karma. Which is kind of refreshing (?) when other shows try to justify a character’s misdeeds in an effort to redeem them in the end.

Su Ryeon’s suicide also works in a narrative sense in a way that is typical of most revenge dramas. When one is consumed with revenge, they end up doing questionable and evil things themselves. And doing those things can take a toll on that person quite profoundly. Many dramas have seen protagonists seeking revenge descend into the depths themselves and turning into what they are fighting against.

Su Ryeon said as much to Logan and that likely led to her decision to sacrifice herself in order to bring Seo Jin to justice and to end this cycle of death and abuse once and for all.

With Seo Jin, I thought her suffering from laryngeal cancer (which has been foreshadowed long ago) is quite the karma for her. Though I thought she would suffer a bit more rather than also commit suicide. And I also thought she was going to jump from that “Trip to Paradise” rooftop as well.

But backing up a bit, my first tears during this episode came when Eun Byeol slit her throat. Little did I know it would be the first of several suicide attempts this episode. But I feel like the build up to that moment was just pitch perfect. It encapsulates the heavy, emotional burden the show has put everyone through for three seasons.

Though I knew it was coming as soon as Eun Byeol said she would end it all, the emotions running through that scene are a perfect way to cap that thread of Penthouse. The greed and selfishness that engulfed most of the characters encapsulated in that moment where both Eun Byeol and Seo Jin finally realized their sins. The last of the characters who needed to do so.

But again, I think it was a necessary moment to help further Seo Jin’s road to her own death. Seo Jin has continued to act like the devil because of her need and want for Eun Byeol to succeed. But now, Seo Jin finally sees that what she had been doing has actually harmed Eun Byeol the most. And it was time for it to end.

In the end, Seo Jin died alone on a rooftop. And will certainly not be invited to Su Ryeon’s heaven penthouse anytime soon.

And speaking of, the Logan fakeout was nicely done. Though it would’ve gone a long way to show him suffering emotionally a bit more over the three years, him getting picked up by Su Ryeon was pretty good. The kind of cool, character-specific heaven transport that you see in many a drama as well.

Logan essentially giving up on life and accepting his fate when his cancer relapsed also fits with his character. He loved Su Ryeon and the show made it painfully obvious with that red string scene. They were destined. And he could not wait to be with her. He did say during their last living moments together that they would be together forever, whether it be heaven or hell. And that ended up being the case.

Elsewhere, we got neat little bows for Seok Hoon and Rona. And even Jenny and Min Hyuk. It was nice to see Kyu Jin heading back to jail (deserved!). Ma Ri being successful. Ms. Jin recovered. And Seok Kyung working hard on her own.

BUT! While watching the episode, I didn’t even take a second look at the homeless man Seok Kyung fed being Dan Tae. Like, at most, I thought he just reminded her of him. And while the man was apparently played by Uhm Ki Joon, I will just believe that it was not Dan Tae. Some people are saying it’s seed planting for season four (which I don’t think will happen). And while I don’t think Dan Tae surviving is completely impossible, I think keeping it a mystery forever is more in line with what this finale overall was striving for. And I think succeeded in doing so.

This episode was uncharacteristically character-driven for Penthouse. But much of it worked because of the wild ride we have all experienced for three seasons. The soapy shocks and awes coupled with legitimately interesting characters (whether you loved them or hated them) helped to make this an emotionally affecting finale.

Penthouse Season 3 Episode 14 Finale Recap and Review

Series Thoughts

I came into Penthouse after season one had wrapped. Seeing all the comments and tweets and TikToks about the show intrigued me. So my family and I caught up with season one before the start of season two.

We had lots of fun watching the show. It was just great, mindless fun. A typical soap opera. And after years of Filipino soap operas just not cutting it and even more years removed from American soaps like Days of our Lives, getting engrossed by an over the top soap opera like Penthouse was welcome.

This wasn’t your typical healing drama. Or family drama. Or romcom. Or fantasy series. It was pure soapy goodness and you just needed to hop along for the ride.

If you want more of this torture and suffering, watch Korean daily dramas. Though they don’t have the budget Penthouse had, they feature much of the same stories and characters that keep you hooked (as well as frustrated, upset and relieved too lol).

But it’s that crazy ride that keeps you coming back for more. Penthouse wasn’t so much a groundbreaking series as it was one that tapped into what the audience has been missing out on in recent years. You didn’t see something like Penthouse often. Other (popular) heavy dramas over the last few years either focused on school-related issues or adultery. Penthouse took all of that and then some to form this complete narrative package.

And when you couple that with a strong, charismatic and charming cast as well as high production values, you’re going to get a winner.

This last year with Penthouse has been one helluva ride. Best drama ever? Goodness no. Was it exhausting, crazy, enjoyable, exciting, upsetting and fun? Absolutely. And I don’t regret getting sucked in one bit.
