Episode Thoughts

This was a pretty good episode I think. I most liked that this episode had less Seo Jin and Dan Tae and instead focused on the other characters for a change.

Of course, Seo Jin and Dan Tae were still the center of attention as everyone finally got on the same page with regards to how evil Seo Jin and Dan Tae are and that the need to be dealt with. I think that was part of what made the episode enjoyable as we’re all starving for some Seo Jin and Dan Tae comeuppance.

There’s still 5(!) episodes left, so naturally, Seo Jin and Dan Tae aren’t going to start burning in hell in Episode 10. But at the very least, the moments of embarrassment for them this episode were very satisfying. Relatively speaking.

First off, I’m half-excited, half-sad at how they dealt with Jun Ki and Ms. Jin.

Like with Ms. Jin, why only do her backstory now only with exposition? It’s the same with the reveal of Dan Tae’s mother and sister. All of this backstory would have actually gone a long way to adding a bit more needed depth to actually keep things shocking and interesting, especially with wacko characters like Ms. Jin. Ease into such revelations for maximum impact.

Show us, don’t just tell us.

When everything else started going sideways, even these small opportunities for engaging backstory and unexpected character depth would’ve been much welcome. The way they are just relying on simple exposition like this is more wasted potential.

Ms. Jin having been abused by her husband and losing her daughter would be a fascinating story to tell. Especially explaining why she is so obsessed with Eun Byeol.

I hope this wasn’t the last we’ve seen of either Ms. Jin or Jun Ki. If it is, then they were merely plot devices instead of actual characters and that would be disappointing. They both had enough material to truly be engaging characters on their own. But if they’re reduced to just plot devices, then it speaks a lot to the way Penthouse has developed.

This season especially feels like they had no long-term plan for the story and that they’ve come up with things on the fly just to capitalize on the blockbuster ratings and buzz. It’s unfortunate, but what can we do now. We just have to hope for a strong finish.

Anyway, elsewhere in the episode I very much loved Ma Ri’s scene with Dong Pil. Though I would’ve liked to have seen Dong Pil suffer a bit more, I’m just happy Ma Ri stood her ground the whole time. I guess Rona’s kindness to him really woke him up which is fine.

Also happy to see Sang Ah not crawl back to Kyu Jin as well. On the list after Seo Jin and Dan Tae, Kyu Jin needs to get what’s coming to him as well.

Nice to see Yoon Hee possessing Eun Byeol. I’m kidding of course (though you never know! Lol). But I think they’re playing that out well so far. It’s funny how I feel like they want so much to do a drug addiction storyline, but since it’s network television, will just play it off this way. lol

I wish they had a bit more dramatic reunion between Seok Hoon and Seok Kyung. As well as Seok Kyung and Su Ryeon as well. It was a bit underwhelming to see that storyline get wrapped up, pretty much. Seok Kyung understands her role in this madness. And after giving Su Ryeon the critical information she needs, it seems like Seok Kyung’s role in the greater arc is done. All that’s left for her is to share an in-person reunion with her mother. Which I will assume won’t happen without Dan Tae kidnapping her and putting her in danger first.

We didn’t get as much Lee Family stuff as I expected. But the episode still didn’t feel lacking in that aspect. They did just enough to not make Logan’s resurrection too bonkers.

In these final five episodes, I’m just looking forward to seeing how Yoon Hee gets resurrected. It really has to be huge. And I supposed it will be one of the few remaining explosive moments to happen in this final stretch.

Overall, one of the stronger, more enjoyable episodes so far this season.
