Recap: Kamen Rider Saber, Chapter 26: Deep Darkness, With a Sword.

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

Everyone is shocked to see Kento is nuCalibur.

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

Kento says he came back to save the world from total destruction. And to do that, he will seal away every single Seiken. Reika says she will not allow that and tries to strike at him. But Yuuri blocks her and sends her smoky self flying, along with Rintaro.

Kento addresses Touma directly, saying his sword must be sealed away as well. He reiterates that he is the only one that can save the world before he poofs away.

Tetsuo reactivates the Northern Base’s defense system. Ogami-san is shocked that Reika was the smoke lady. But Mei points out that Kento’s resurrection is the most pressing matter to discuss right now.

Yuuri says those cut down by the Dark Blade either die or fall into a deep darkness. Kento must have come from the latter.

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

Touma says he is glad that Kento is alive. But Ogami-san reminds him that Kento wants to seal all their swords away. Touma replies that they might not know what is driving him to think this way, but he is sure they can all fight alongside each other in the future.

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

Kento has a series of flashbacks of the world being destroyed and is resolved that he alone is enough.

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

Down south, a frantic Ren begs Reika to confirm whether or not his dearly beloved Kento-kun actually is alive. She tells him to shut up.

Over in the throne room, Tassel shows himself to Master Logos who refers to him as “Viktor.” Tassel says he prefers to go by “Tassel” now.

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

Up north, Touma tells Ogami-san about the sad boy he sees when he loses consciousness. He isn’t sure what will happen, but he still wants to help him somehow.

Mei asks if the Seiken can be sealed in the first place. Yuuri says the Dark Blade certainly can do it. He decides to tell them the story.

In the past, a woman connected the two worlds allowing five humans to cross over into Wonderworld. One of them would form Sword of Logos, another remained to be Wonderworld’s protector (Tassel).

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

The remaining three were drawn to power and absorbed a portion of the Great Book’s power. Those three are the Megido3.

The Dark Sword was a special sword created during the conflict between the swordsmen and the Megido. It was entrusted with the power to seal the sword of Light if it ever came to be misused. Thus, it can also seal the other Seiken as well.

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

A hopeful Touma thinks that means someone is misusing the swords. So all they have to do is work together with Kento without having to seal their Seiken away. Yuuri says it is not that easy.

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

Down south, Tassel reiterates the deal he made with the first Master Logos. Master Logos was in charge of Earth while Wonderworld was his responsibility in order to maintain the delicate balance.

Master Logos says that was not his pledge. He intends to obtain the Great Book and claim its power for himself. With it, he can remake this horrible world and become its ruler.

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

Tassel says humanity’s fate is not something Master Logos can toy with. But Master Logos says it is his right. So he will exploit all within his grasp. That includes the swordsmen, the Megido and Tassel.

Master Logos holds up his Book and Tassel gets sucked in.

Up in the shop, Touma and Mei are preparing to go speak with Kento. Ogami-san says he will come with.

Kento bandages himself up in a parking garage, thinking about strange memories (or premonitions?). Yuuri arrives and says he can not allow himself to be sealed as it is his responsibility to weed out bad apples at the SoL and to return things to their correct order.

Kento says that goes against his own goal, so they must battle. They both henshin. But Reika arrives to get in the middle of them. She will not allow any swords to be sealed. And she also declares that she will obtain the Dark Sword as well. Yuuri will not allow that to happen.

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

The three of them battle each other.

Touma, Mei, Ogami-san and Tetsuo arrive. Tetsuo takes on Reika while Ogami-san takes on Kento. But Kento whacks Reika into the wall and slashes at Ogami-san and Tetsuo, forcing them to dehenshin. Yuuri shields Touma and Mei from the same attack.

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

Touma reminds Kento that they are going to find Luna together. But Kento says none of that matters if the world is going to end. Touma asks Kento to explain.

“I have seen the future.”

The others can’t believe Kento’s words. But Touma says he trusts him.

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

Kento recalls the many different possible futures he saw and experienced while in the Darkness. But every one of them ended the same way: with the end of the world and all their deaths.

That’s why the only way to prevent that from happening is to seal the swords. Kento says Touma will go berserk in a little bit, but will be able to dehenshin before hurting anyone.

Ogami-san and Tetsuo try to attack Kento from behind, but he easily forces them to dehenshin. He first seals Tetsuo’s sword and moves toward Ogami-san.

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

An emotional Touma cannot believe this. He henshins to Dragonic Knight and the sprinklers turn on as he goes berserk.

Kento poofs away. Reika swipes Tetsuo’s Book and leaves. Touma finds himself in the sad forest as the sad boy approaches him.

Kamen Rider Saber Episode 26 Recap

“Are you sad as well?” he asks.

The sad boy reaches out his hand, but Touma does not take it. The sad boy walks away.

Suddenly, Touma is able to dehenshin out of Dragonic Knight by himself. Mei runs over to him and Ogami-san asks if Touma really did that on his own.

Tetsuo screams in agony as he holds his sealed sword.

Episode Thoughts

When there’s no Tassel introduction, like when there’s no full opening theme, you know things are going to get crazy!

Though I think last week was a stronger episode overall, this one still felt very similar in tone and vibe. Like, these last two episodes have felt so different from every single episode before it. And that’s a good thing.

Saber has slowly trended in the right direction these last couple of weeks. But these two episodes have really shown something different. And possibly a look at the potential this season truly has. If only they had been this way from the beginning.

In that sense, while I don’t think any of the events in this episode really have a solid foundation built up from the first 24 episodes for them to stand on, it was still an impactful episode. A lot of things feel like they’ve been pulled out of nowhere, but they are strangely interesting and still work anyway.

The way the episode was presented helped to make things feel more interesting than they might actually have been.

The scoreless, silent scenes. The quick cuts. The dramatic pauses. Almost like some kind of noir drama, to be honest. It’s so random, but I like it. It’s something different from what we’ve gotten all season. And any refreshing thing is a plus for Saber.

I very much enjoy this moody, very soft-spoken Kento. And that sequence of him recalling how he had to relive all those hopeless futures was very well done. It helped to support why he is the way he is now. Even though a lot of the scenes were essentially recycled from previous episodes (I think), it was still effective to convey what Kento saw and experienced.

The idea of the future being set in stone, or in the pages of a book is very interesting. With the season’s book theme, they’ve made it a point to say that they are in charge of writing the ending to their books. Of course, referring to their lives and their own stories.

So while it isn’t as hopeless as Kento might believe it is, his hopeless feelings are justified based on what he’s gone through since “dying.”

I believe he really feels that way and is not possessed or something like that. It would make for a much better story if he comes to this conclusion on his own. It makes for a more interesting Kento.

I’m kind of sad they inserted that scene of Ren asking if Kento is really alive or not. I guess I’m still waiting for the moment Ren and Kento come face to face. That needs to be a huge moment.

It is very fun seeing Keisuke Soma as Master Logos. Of course I know him as the hyper, high-energy Genta on Shinkenger. So it is a lot of fun seeing him play a completely opposite character here. And he is doing a great job so far. Master Logos definitely feels very sinister and dark. I think that kind of big character is needed this season.

The Megido haven’t been much of an antagonist to our Riders. Mainly because they have continually been wasted for 25 episodes (half the season!). I can’t even imagine the potential left on the table for them three this first half of the season.

That said, perhaps Master Logos making his move will finally give the Megido3 something to do and have more juicy material for the three actors who I know would just hit it out of the park if given the chance.

There was a lot of exposition in this episode. And honestly, I would’ve liked them to have shown more rather than tell. Show us the Megido3 being engulfed with a hunger for power. Don’t just have Yuuri tells us. Give us a shocking moment revealing Tassel’s identity. Don’t have it be a nonchalant, throwaway line about his real name and being guardian of Wonderworld.

I wasn’t as annoyed by the Luna talk this episode. Which is a surprise to me. Lol But I did like Touma being very emotional in the end. It’s one of those moments where our title hero has always been happy and hopeful all season, even when everyone around him wasn’t. And finally, he just can’t stay hopeful any longer. So he succumbs to his hopelessness and despair. It was a good moment.

Overall, I enjoyed this episode. I think mainly because of Kento and his revelations. Again, I hope they keep Kento this way for a few more episodes at least. While there still doesn’t seem to be an endgame for anyone in sight, the character dynamics are being used well and the end of the world is being set in motion by the ambitious like Master Logos.

  1. I feel like Saber’s been on a roll since the episode Primitive Dragon debuted. Is it me or do berserk rider stories always hit the mark because of how dangerously awesome they become? I also appreciate the increased focus on the least developed of the Megido3, Legeiel, during these last couple of episodes. He still may not have done as much as the other two, but he’s certainly become more fun to watch with his blind anger and need for revenge against Touma. It’s clear his actor is taking full advantage of the new material and screentime he’s been given. And I must admit, it was quite nice that the Megido3 finally had some of their backstory revealed. I hope the fact that they used to be humans is brought up in the future. Keisuke Soma, as you said, is doing great as Master Logos; he’s got good versatility. Kento’s reintroduction and new motives add a greater intensity and scale to the conflict that I feel has been needed for a while. And I definitely, like you, would’ve preferred if Tassel’s identity reveal had been dragged out for a little longer. Although perhaps that’s because he’s always reminded me of DJ Sagara, who’s identity was revealed late in the series at just the right time.

    1. Yes, the Megido3 backstory adds a whole other layer to them that I hope they really explore.

The Tassel reveal was almost like a throwaway line. I wish it carried a little more drama and surprise.
