All teams are on the same train to Berlin, Germany. The other teams are surprised to see Hayley & Kaylynn survived the last Leg. Upon arrival in Berlin, teams must find their next clue in a symbolic suitcase by the East Side Gallery of the Berlin Wall.

That clue directs teams to drive a Trabant to Teledisko, the world’s smallest disco party. The teams have various experiences with the Trabants as they drive through Berlin.

At Teledisko, teams must hop into a booth where they will have their own private disco for four euros until they receive their next clue. DeAngelo & Gary are in the lead as Riley & Maddison and Hung & Chee hop in together. They end up waiting for Will & James, but the boyfriends can’t get their car started so they are left behind. They end up getting stuck on the road and decide to abandon their car and decide to run to the next clue.

DeAngelo & Gary are far in the lead as they arrive at Landel’s Hotel where Phil says specifically that teams must park their car. They open the next clue which reveals the Road Block: Who wants to feel the wind in their hair?

For this Road Block, teams will face-forward rappel down the side of the hotel and answer a question when they’re back on the ground. What they don’t know is that they must be mindful of the flashing letters below which they must unscramble to reveal the answer: sauerkraut.

DeAngelo decides to do the Road Block and begins to walk up 15 flights of stairs. When DeAngelo arrives on the ground, he is asked to unscramble the letters but he didn’t see them. He walks up the stairs with Hung and makes her promise to tell him the answer and not leave without him. She agrees.

Maddison is already back on the ground and he also did not pay attention to the letters.

Before Hung even goes over the side of the building, she begins to unscramble the letters. After screaming her way down, she immediately gives the answer.

She and Chee open the next clue revealing the Detour: Belt It Out or Belch It Out. In Belt It Out, teams must join the Berlin Comedian Harmonists and perform the traditional song “I Wish I Were a Chicken.” In Belch It Out, teams must learn a sequence of beer yoga poses and teach them to a class.

Hung & Chee wait for DeAngelo and she tells him the answer when he gets back down. They both decide to wait for Maddison and tell him the answer as well. Maddison waits for Will to tell him the answer too.

DeAngelo & Gary and Hung & Chee run to look for taxis. There is one available and the NFL brothers hop in. Hung can’t believe they would take the only taxi when DeAngelo didn’t even know any of the letters. Riley & Maddison and Will & James end up hopping into a taxi even before Hung & Chee.

Both Aparna and Leo do not know the answer, but they have the letters and they work together to figure it out. Leo guesses sauerkraut and both he and Aparna give the answer without having to go back up.

Hayley arrives, but Leo does not give her any clues.

DeAngelo & Gary, Hung & Chee and Riley & Maddison choose the beer while Will & James head to the singing. After failing their first attempt, the NFL brothers head to the Pit Stop at Neukolln. They claim first and win $7500 each. Riley & Maddison take 2nd with Hung & Chee in 3rd. Will & James take 4th.

Back at the Road Block, Hayley is struggling. She has the letters, but cannot unscramble them. She decides to go into the hotel and ask some people for help. A lady at the café gives her the correct answer and the sisters can finally leave.

Eswar & Aparna and Leo & Alana are neck and neck at the chicken singing and they end up finishing 5th and 6th. Kaylynn & Hayley are last. But this is a Non-Elimination Leg.

Episode Thoughts

I feared this day would happen. I’ve always said I cringe at alliances on the Race. But even more if it is to the level that was displayed on this Leg. That was really just one of the most annoying and frustrating displays I’ve ever seen on TAR.

I know most people did not watch The Amazing Race Philippines 2. But I think it was that season that solidified how much I abhor alliances on The Amazing Race especially when it means teams aren’t actually competing and instead are just feeding each other answers and looking for shortcuts and loopholes in tasks. Any way for them not to actually work and put in the effort. Part of that is how the tasks are designed of course. But you can’t ignore how the teams choose to take advantage in ways that really undermine the Race and the competition.

I hate that I feel this way. But I really dislike the Mine Five Alliance. On their own, they’d be great teams you could root for and really feel like they deserve and earn their spots on the Race. But just everything about what they did at the Road Block was just so horrible. What’s the point of Racing and what’s the point of Bertram and Co. designing tasks if the teams aren’t even going to do them?

Like, perhaps TAR should just morph into a lesser version of Big Brother and Survivor where you win based on how you can manipulate others to drag you along in the competition.

That would be so fun, yeah? A total hoot!

(Congrats to Brendon & Rachel on the new addition to their family, by the way.)

The Amazing Race 32 is (was?) shaping up to be such a great season. But the Mine Five Alliance are doing their best to try and drag it down and make it a typical HD Era TAR season. (That is, not very good.)

Anyway, let’s try to forget the nonsense at the Road Block and look at the Leg itself. It was actually pretty good, relatively speaking.

It was fun to see the Trabants again on TAR after they were lots of fun on TAR6. But they should’ve had teams driving them all Leg. (And why weren’t Will & James penalized for abandoning their car like that?)

The disco task was okay filler.

The Road Block was great… if it played out as it was originally intended. Teams having to unscramble the letters and perhaps going up several times would be great. (Should’ve had several lines going down too to facilitate multiple attempts.) With tasks like this, there should be a rule that teams CANNOT help each other. Alliance or not, teams have to figure it out on their own. I might allow teams going to locals to ask. But not WAITING for another team and stuffing each other’s mouths with the answer.

Leo and Aparna helping each other was okay (not great) because they memorized the letters, but worked together to figure it out. Leo gets the points for actually figuring it out and confirming with Aparna. But they were thinking together and not Hung just telling everyone the answer.

The Detour was also okay and fitting tasks for a night Leg.

But *sigh*. I don’t even know.

Anyway, here’s the half-season preview that aired after the Canadian airing of Episode 6. It should’ve aired after the episode if it aired last week as originally planned. But CBS omitted it tonight.

My Subjective Team Rankings

The Amazing Race 32 Aparna Eswar The Amazing Race 32 Kaylynn Haley The Amazing Race 32 Alana Leo GAP The Amazing Race 32 Hung Chee The Amazing Race 32 Gary Deangelo The Amazing Race 32 Riley Maddison The Amazing Race 32 Will James

Can TAR32 pull a TAR China and bring Michelle & Victoria back in the middle of the Race or something? Please?

So they may still be part of the Mine Five Alliance. But I excuse Eswar & Aparna because they’re always in the back and never have an opportunity to take part in the nonsense. They have to fend for themselves most of the time.

I didn’t expect this at the beginning of the season, but I am so rooting for Hayley & Kaylynn and Leo & Alana. If only to try and knock off one of the Mine Five Alliance somehow. I was annoyed that they were saved by the first Non-Elimination. But I was so happy to see them saved on this Non-Elimination. They deserve it. At least, it means none of the Mine Five will get saved by a Non-Elim. (Minor consolation.) But it was great to see them not give up. Leo & Alana, meanwhile, probably would be one of the strongest teams if the others weren’t dragging each other along like they are. Leo & Alana have shown themselves to be a pretty solid team. And they know and understand what competition is about.

I really hate to not love Hung & Chee. But I can’t help it. Hung WAITING for the other teams to tell them the answer. What kind of nonsense is that? I was actually happy that DeAngelo & Gary took the only taxi because it serves Hung & Chee right for being so beholden to their alliance. I wouldn’t even be upset if Hung & Chee got eliminated because they helped the other teams who would then go on to beat them to the Mat. (Or any other member of the alliance in that position.) It’s just really stupid to wait for other teams and not just go on ahead. Complete nonsense.

DeAngelo & Gary are definitely freeloading off of their alliance. But I’m not even mad at that either. If they can screw over their alliance and get themselves ahead, then I’m all for it. They all agreed to an alliance. I would love for the sweet moment that the team that contributes the least to the alliance ends up winning. It would be hilarious and well-deserved.

Riley & Maddison and Will & James are definitely being portrayed as the puppetmasters in the alliance and it’s very cringey. I hate to put Will & James in last because they have great taste in TAR seasons. But I just can’t stomach this Big BrotherSurvivor type of play on TAR. If I wanted to watch that stuff, I’d watch those two shows. Not TAR.
