Music Monday, October 12, 2020 – Narachan, Bobby, NU’EST, WEi

An unexpected new favorite, great songs from old favorites and a solid debut.

“September Hills,” Narachan (M.O.N.T)

It feels like such a long time since M.O.N.T first released their excellent debut track “Sorry” in 2017. Since then, the trio has performed around the world and shown off their stunning versatility. From rock to hip-hop to pop and everything in between, M.O.N.T is certainly one of the most versatile groups in K-pop. In the last couple of weeks, the members have released solo tracks. And I was absolutely blown away by member Narachan’s song.

“September Hills” is a dreamy mid-tempo confession song. Narachan’s smooth vocals set the vibe with gentle verses and a rousing chorus. It is an immediately captivating song with a similar lo-fi music video to match. The song is unexpected in that when it comes to M.O.N.T, you should know to expect the unexpected.

This will definitely be one of my favorite tracks of the year.

“Spotlight,” Bobby

I admit I’m not much of a YG listener. And that includes the group iKon. But when it comes to Bobby, it’s a different story. His solo album “Love and Fall” was a revelation to me when it was first released. It went on to become one of my favorite albums in 2017 and possibly one of my favorite albums from a Korean solo artist. Since then, I’ve been looking forward to hearing more from him. And that includes K-drama OSTs like “Spotlight” from Record of Youth.

A positive, motivating rock track, “Spotlight” lives up to its title by shining a spotlight on Bobby’s versatility and unique voice. Not only has it gotten me more excited to start watching the drama, it fuels my craving for more music from him.

“Drive,” NU’EST

I’ve been a fan of NU’EST since debut and have been so happy to see their huge successes since Produce 101. I’m not sure if I’ve followed their Japanese releases. But their latest “Drive” is an excellent track to start with. The song fits perfectly with their current, more mature sound. And their vocals take center stage.

“Twilight,” WEi

WEi makes their debut with “Twilight,” a refreshing song that may feel a little safe and too familiar. I’m a fan of Kim Donghan’s solo releases and enjoyed RAINZ and 1THE9. So a lot of the faces in the group are very familiar to me.

I like the song and the MV highlights all the members well. But perhaps I was expecting a little more considering the experience of the members. I’ve yet to listen to the rest of their debut album (I’ll be sure to do that soon), but so far it’s a solid debut and I’m looking forward to seeing what else they have in store.
