Leg 20.09 – “I’m sorry you’re hungry, but I don’t speak French.”

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Teams begin the 9th Leg by hopping on a train from Interlaken to Geneva. Once in Geneva, teams must find the Palace of Nations.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Here, teams will need to identify the flags of all remaining teams on the Race in order to receive the next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

That clue tells teams to hop back on to the train to make their way to Lyon, France!

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Once in Lyon, teams will find the next clue at Lyon Cathedral or Cathedrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lyon. And that clue will reveal the Detour: Soie or Traboule.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

In Soie, teams must head to Soierie Vivante in Croix-Rousse where they will dive into Lyon’s silk history by correctly weaving an intricate pattern.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

In Traboule, teams will explore Lyon’s traboules, secret passages in the Croix-Rousse district, to find several messages left by the French Resistance during World War II. Teams must then translate the French messages into English in order to receive the next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

After the Detour, teams will be given a photo of this place. They will have to figure out it is actually a mural: La Fresque des Canuts.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

And here, teams will learn that the ALL U-Turn has been activated!

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

After teams complete both Detours, they must make their way to Place Bellecour.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Here, teams will choose an unfinished mural and complete it using a provided photo. Once approved, they will receive the next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Teams must now head to the Institut Lumiere.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Here, teams will assemble a traditional cinematograph and then use it to watch a film to find the next clue. The clue will be somewhere in the film and it will point them to…

…this bouchon which are restaurants that serve traditional Lyonnaise cuisine. And here, teams will encounter the Road Block: Who can serve it up? As this is the 13th Road Block, there are no longer any restrictions for which team member can perform a Road Block unless otherwise stated.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

For this Road Block, teams must take the orders of a table of three guests plus their non-participating teammate in French and relay the order to the kitchen. They must then correctly serve the dishes, including reciting back the name of each dish. Their teammate must eat their dish before teams can receive the next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Teams must now make their way to the docks along the Rhone.
The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Here, teams will join Lyon Canoe to stand up paddle board down the river to the Musee des Confluences.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

And here at the museum, teams will find another (!) Road Block: Who can get some cooperation?

Interpol, the international police organization, is headquartered here in Lyon. However, the common misconception is that Interpol is an international police agency. In reality, Interpol is an organization that facilitates cooperation between police from its 194 member countries.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

For this Road Block, teams must search the area around the museum for six undercover officers representing the countries of the remaining six teams on the Race. (1 Canadian, 1 Vietnamese, 1 American and 3 Filipino officers) Teams will have to figure out that their clothing features the colors of their country’s flag. Once teams have found the correct officers (and discreetly interact with them), the officers will give them a piece of the clue that they must memorize.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

That clue will eventually direct them to the Orange Cube where they will find the next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Teams must now make their way to the Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourviere.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

And that final clue will direct teams to make their way on foot to the Ancient Theatre of Fourviere, the Pit Stop for this Leg of the Race.

The first team to check-in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

And the last team to check-in WILL be eliminated!

“Director’s” Commentary

This was a bit of a replacement Leg as the original route had a full Leg in Geneva. But Lyon definitely turned out to be a great location for a solid Leg. Plus! It added another country to the route, which is nice.

Geneva wasn’t completely removed from the route though as we have a pseudo-recycled task from TAR27. This task is much simpler than TAR27’s task and really more to connect to the Road Block later on in the Leg. It also works for logistics purposes to have a little bit of an easier time traveling between Interlaken and Lyon.

The Detour in Lyon has teams sort of dig into the city’s history a little bit. I put an All U-Turn here because I think both tasks are good, sort of tedious tasks that can up the frustration for teams. And it’s only the beginning of the Leg too.

I like the traboule side of the Detour since there’s a bit of mystery and the traboules look very interesting.

The mural would make a great backdrop for a clue read or U-Turn reveal. And of course it relates to the next task where teams will finish painting their own mural. Not sure how that would work, but we’ll figure it out later. Lol

I was looking for an extra task somewhere and saw that the cinematograph was invented here in Lyon by the Lumière brothers. So it would be perfect to feature a task related to them here. We could do something like the TAR17 film task from Russia. But I’m not sure.

The first Road Block is a very familiar TAR task. Taking orders in a foreign language. But it fits here as the bouchons are a big part of Lyonnaise culture.

Next up is a random paddle board task down the beautiful river. And it’s perfect as it leads to the museum in an area known for its unique architecture.

Wondering if I had enough tasks, I found Interpol HQ is here in Lyon. And at first I thought of recycling the TAR8 secret agent task. But then I remembered Interpol isn’t some kind of secret service agency like that. So I figured out this interesting task that I could connect to the flags from Geneva. Teams need to bring together police officers from different countries to solve the case, that is, their next clue.

Making things even more interesting, it is a vague riddle-like clue. Teams must walk to the Orange Cube, but it shouldn’t be as obvious as telling them where it is. So it’s possible for teams to find all six officers, but not know where to go next. And they could be wandering around the area for a while! (We hope!)

The Leg ends with two touristy attractions. But overall, another full Leg!
