Leg 20.01B – “I don’t want to jump off the cliff again.”

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

The opening SuperLeg continues as teams must drive themselves to New Manila International Airport in Bulakan, Bulacan. Once there, they must find Hangar #2 for their next clue.

Teams are about to leave country, but they will need to earn their tickets on one of two direct flights to their next destination: Kathmandu, Nepal! And to earn those tickets, teams will need to face the Road Block: Who can catch their ticket out of the country?

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

For this Road Block, the performing team member must catch enough water balloons filled with paint to fill a nearby bucket up to a marked line. The balloons will be tossed down to them by their teammate who will be hoisted up by a crane. The balloons must be intact before they pop them over their marked bucket. Any paint from popped balloons cannot be poured into their buckets.

If the hoisted up team member runs out of balloons before they can fill their bucket, they must be let down to allow the next team to attempt the Road Block. The task is first come, first served.

The first six teams will be on a direct Philippine Airlines flight arriving at 6pm. The other six teams will be on a direct Cebu Pacific flight arriving at 7pm.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

And their first out of the country destination? Kathmandu, Nepal!

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Before leaving the country, teams can take a shower at New Manila International Airport’s state of the art and world removed shower rooms.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, teams must make their way to Kathmandu Durbar Square.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Here, teams must assemble 20 triangle stands known as dhauka on which they will place 20 pots of freshly made juju dhau. Using a bamboo cord carrier, teams will deliver the freshly made king yogurt to Boudhanath.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Here, teams can claim tickets for one of four morning flights to Pokhara. There is room for 3 teams on each flight: 6:45am, 8am (x2) and 8:20am.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Once they arrive in Pokhara, teams must make their way to the World Peace Pagoda for their next clue, the Detour: Trinkets or Treats.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

In Trinkets, teams must help local Tibetan women set up their spots to sell handmade jewels and trinkets for the day. Once set up, they will learn how to make one bracelet each (which they can keep) to receive their next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

In Treats, teams will head to this restaurant and make a fresh batch of momos to the satisfaction of the owner. When approved, teams will each eat a bowl of momos soup to receive their next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Teams must now make their way to Sunrise Paragliding in Sarangkot. While teams enjoy the stunning views in a tandem paraglide, they will also have to keep an eye out below for the number of different-sized Race flags (6). Each team member must correctly relay the number once they land (without discussing with each other first). If teams are incorrect, they will receive a 5-minute penalty for each number they are off by.

Next up, teams must make their way to this farm in Sarangkot where they will find yet another Detour. And it is a Switchback Detour as well: Hay There or Water Here.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

In Hay There, teams must chop and gather bundles of hay from the fields and collect enough to fill large bins at this farm.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

In Water Here, teams must fill water jugs from a communal well and deliver them to nearby homes using a small wooden wagon.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

After the Detour, teams must head to Phewa Lake.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Here, teams will choose a two-person pedal boat to take themselves to Barahi Temple. There, teams must convince at least four people to hop on to the boat with them to bring them back to shore in order to receive their next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

Teams will now make their way to Purna Yoga Retreat Centre. And here, they will find ANOTHER! Road Block: Who has a good ear for healing? There are no restrictions as to who can perform this Road Block.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

In this Road Block Switchback, teams must master Tibetan singing bowls by learning and performing a specific healing and meditation sound massage. Once they pass, they will be given the next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines vs The World

And after three full days of Racing, that clue directs teams to the very first Pit Stop, the International Mountain Museum.

The first team to check-in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

The last team to check-in here WILL be the first team eliminated from the Race.

This is also the Trigger Point for this Leg of the Race. The first eliminated team will decide whether or not the U-Turn or Yield will be activated on the next Leg.

“Director’s” Commentary

So this loooong SuperLeg is finally over.

For this VS The World season, I definitely wanted a big, stunning location for the first country. As this season would certainly attract attention from foreign TAR fans and even TAR’s foreign home networks (maybe! lol), showing off that TARPH can visit a rarely visited country like Nepal would be an awesome flex. Hehe.

Unfortunately, this Leg is very much a recycled Leg from TARPHDME12. There’s definitely plenty of other things to do even in just Kathmandu and Pokhara. But obviously, I wasn’t able to fly there for location scouting now was I? lol

Anyway, I chose Nepal because it’s definitely a beautiful country that doesn’t usually get featured on international programs, let alone TAR.

First up, we have teams head to the probably-not-going-to-get-built New Manila International Airport. I wanted teams to have one more task in the Philippines to decide their flights. So essentially, this task at the airport is like a Starting Line task. I wasn’t sure what kind of task we could do at the airport, but since it would conceivably be a brand new, Changi or Incheon-style airport metropolis, perhaps there would be other things to do as well.

But I think this Road Block is a fun, oddball kind of task to counter the very provincial tasks of both the Nueva Ecija half-Leg and the Pokhara half-Leg.

I set the fictional direct flights to arrive in Kathmandu in the evening so as to have one full day in Pokhara. And to decide on more flights, I included the recycled juju dhau task which I think is a great task that gets teams out and about.

Once in Pokhara, we do get a few new tasks. The first Detour gets teams along the main business strip in town that wasn’t featured in the TARPHDME12 visit. Again, both tasks get teams interacting with locals.

Then we have paragliding and looking out for things below, but modified to include the guessing and penalty aspect which should make the recycled task more interesting. Our hope is of course teams mess up and don’t get the right answer so they incur penalties. And we can do that with cleverly camouflaged flags hehe

The Sarangkot Detour is fully recycled and unchanged.

Barahi Temple was the Pit Stop in the previous visit, but this time we have teams working on Phewa Lake for a nice, physical task.

The singing bowls Road Block is also recycled from the previous visit. And we have the Pit Stop at the museum.

The Trigger Point is definitely something different from previous ones. And it could prove to be very controversial as the eliminated team will have a more direct effect on the surviving teams. Imagine having all Trigger Points be decided by eliminated/last place teams! Ooooo…

Overall, a half-Leg that obviously is too full, even for its own Leg. But that is a TARPHDME trademark, after all.
