Very light spoilers.
A nostalgic and romantic slice of life story. That’s what Tune In For Love (Yoo Yeol’s Music Album & Joyful Album/유열의 음악앨범) is. And it’s a beautiful one at that.
Jung Hae In and Kim Go Eun effortlessly bring Hyun Woo and Mi Soo to life in this story of how two young people meet and fall in love in the face of the changing world around them and circumstances beyond their control.
The main focus of the film is following the journeys of Hyun Woo and Mi Soo across the span of a couple of years around the turn of the century. They meet in an unextraordinary way and grow close, but are separated numerous times by various events. And once they do finally get a chance to truly connect, it still isn’t smooth sailing for them as a couple.
But at the same time, their journey really isn’t extraordinary. And as a testament to the writing, direction and wonderful performances by the cast led by Jung and Kim, Tune In For Love is still fully engaging all the way through.
The film is a true slice of life story. We see these years in the lives of Hyun Woo and Mi Soo as if we just flipped the channel to their lives already in progress. A mixture of every day life and pleasant happenstance keep the story moving forward in a way that is never dull, yet never shocking or loud.
And that’s very much a positive thing. The audience is immediately invested in the characters. Of course, that in turn drives your interest in the story itself.
Equal parts nostalgia and romance, Tune In For Love is a sincere treat to watch.
