Episode Thoughts

I was absolutely in tears. This had to be one of the grandest, most epic regular season/non-finale episodes of toku I’ve ever seen. Some truly amazing scenes matching a truly affecting story.

Now not everything was perfect of course, especially in the build up to this climactic episode. But it still worked big time and was an absolutely amazing half-hour of television.

So many things to love about this episode. Towa telling his brother about Nada’s regrets (continuing what we saw from Towa the last few eps) and him taking charge when he went DosshinSoul. Bamba’s impassioned plea to Nada. Melto’s decisiveness throughout the episode. Asuna’s raw emotion. Even Canalo’s zoomed in face when Oto wakes up.

And of course Koh’s sincerity and positive personality. His belief in the good of other people was used effectively in this episode.

It was just one scene after another. All working together in this perfect harmony, so to speak to really help make this such a compelling episode.

I’ve mentioned before how Nada is a great character because he isn’t clear cut. He’s obviously done some bad things and has held many negative (minus!) feelings. But he hasn’t been completely irredeemable, in a sense. We’ve certainly seen him subtly express doubt and regret over the last couple of episodes. But we’ve also seen him egging the others on in a negative way. Kind of like throwing shade or outright criticizing them.

But it does appear that his time spent with them has helped him fight off his initial negative thoughts. He hates “that part” of them/the way they act that is so opposite of the way he has acted and faced challenges.

That’s why one of my criticisms is that we should’ve seen more of those scenes between Bamba and Nada. Bamba mentioned before that he knew Nada and of his leaving the Tribe. But it would’ve been nice to have seen a few more snippets like we saw in this episode of Bamba and Nada’s previous interactions. I think that would’ve given even more weight to Bamba’s absolutely excellent monologue. And also establish a little more where Nada was coming from, but not completely until this episode of course.

Still, this episode proved to be dramatic and so emotional. And even balanced with plenty of lighthearted moments as well.

The Jack-o-lantern Minosaur was pretty awesome. (I just cringe about the idea that a future Power Rangers season will turn this episode into a clip show Halloween special.)

But the shot of the Minosaur opening up its cute pumpkin umbrella as it fell to its certain death was both amusing and exciting at the same time. Such a contrast to the Minosaur’s morbid power of driving people so violent that they go around killing each other.

In addition to the writing and the excellent performances of the entire cast, the directing in this episode was just especially great.

This shot was absolutely stunning and terrifying. The screaming faces of all the hatred that Gaisorg’s absorbed from every person it has ever possessed. And especially hearing the wailing from those faces:

And this scene with the helmet being formed in the clouds:

Another amazing use of drones here:

Both scenes particularly helped bolster the epic feel of the proceedings.

But this episode brought an aspect I’ve pointed out before full circle. I’ve been critical of the way Ryusoulger has handled their numerous episodes dealing with suicide. Especially since each instance actually had the foundation to be dealt with in a great, meaningful and respectful way.

This episode featured Nada willing to slice his own throat so as to be released from Gaisorg’s control once and for all.

Again, ending one’s life as an answer to one’s problems. We saw it with Ui, the Mayor. Maybe even Kureon that one episode where he was depressed from the abuse he was getting from Gachierus.

And here, we saw Nada and that scene. But later it dawned on me during Bamba’s plea to him. Nada had always run away from challenges and hardships. And for some, ending one’s life is seen as running away. There’s obviously many unique reasons why someone would choose to end their life. You can’t put everyone under the same umbrella, as it were. But Ryusoulger has also shown how others can help someone move away from those types of feelings and help strengthen them in a way that allows them to keep fighting and moving forward.

But it all makes more sense to me now. When we look at this season, where do Minosaurs (Minusaurs) come from? From the minus, negative feelings of a person or thing. The Druidons exploit those feelings to create the monsters and in driving those birthers deeper into that negative space, they are essentially pushing them to their deaths. It might not be directly suicide, but it almost kind of presents it in this metaphorical way? I’m not sure if that’s the right word for it.

But basically, seeking support from people you trust and not being afraid to reach out and accept that support can help combat negative/minus feelings. And that’s true for something as heavy and serious as contemplating suicide. Or something as simple as being upset you missed your favorite TV show. And everything in between.

When the Ryusoulgers realized and learned of Nada’s real feelings, they reached out to him. They saw he needed helped and offered themselves to support him.

And we haven’t talked about the episode also basically saying there should be less hate in the world. Which is true.

So aside from all the technical wonder and exciting developments in this episode, it’s this realization I had that made my already positive feelings for the episode that much stronger.

Just an absolutely incredible and memorable episode that should be remembered for many years to come.
