Recap: The Amazing Race Canada 7, Episode 9 – “Another Day in Thunder Bay”

The Amazing Race Canada 7 Episode 9

Teams must drive from Charlevoix back to Quebec City where they will board a train to Toronto via Montreal. Once there, they will find their next clue at the Royal Ontario Museum.

Here, teams must search for 10 objects from the museum’s permanent collection and collect a letter stamp from each one. They will then use the letter stamps to figure out their next destination: Thunder Bay.

Dave & Irina gain a lead and maintain it as they must now sign-up for a bus at the Toronto Coach Terminal for Thunder Bay where they will be released in five minute intervals.

Anthony & James are 2nd out of the museum followed by Lauren & Joanne.

When Sarah & Sam ask for a check of their answer, Aarthy asks them if they got it and Sarah tells them “Thunder Bay.” Sam can’t believe Sarah would tell them. Sarah says they are their friends. Aarthy thanks them as both teams run out of the museum at the same time.

On the way, Aarthy and Thinesh agree they would let Sarah & Sam sign up for 4th for telling them the answer. At the CLIF sign-up board, Aarthy again thanks Sarah & Sam for the answer.

Teams arrive in Thunder Bay the next day at the Terry Fox Monument. After paying tribute to Terry Fox, teams will hop into a brand new 2019 Chevy Spark and drive to a Shell station to fuel up with Shell V-Power Nitro+ to receive their next clue.

After fueling up, teams must drive to Wacky’s where they will Face-Off in one of three classic games: air hockey, table hockey or axe throwing.

Anthony & James catch up and pass Dave & Irina to Wacky’s, so they have earned the right to choose the game and they choose axe throwing.

Dave says he actually won an axe-throwing tournament. Both he and Irina start off with a bullseye each and finish with a score of 22 to Anthony & James’ 12.

Dave (who admits he never actually won an axe-throwing tournament) & Irina open the next clue which reveals the Detour: Cutting Edge or Cutting a Wedge. In Cutting Edge, teams head to Lakehead University where they will unbox drones from The Source. While positioned behind a wall, one Racer will use a controller to blindly fly the drone over a field to find four moose toys. Their teammate will use a VR headset to help their partner navigate the drone and then mark the moose’s location on a grid. In Cutting a Wedge, teams head to Thunder Oak Cheese Farm where they will locate a specific gouda wheel and then correctly cut and package 32 slices.

This is also a Limited Stations Detour with a maximum of three teams at each Detour. When all slots are filled, “it can no longer be used by another team.”

Dave & Irina head over to the drone with Dave navigating for Irina.

Back at the Face Off, Anthony & James are able to beat Lauren & Joanne. Lauren & Joanne choose air hockey to face off against Sarah & Sam. The team with the most goals in three minutes wins. And that team is Sarah & Sam who win 3-1.

Aarthy & Thinesh arrive at Wacky’s and Lauren & Joanne choose air hockey again. Lauren & Joanne are able to overcome Aarthy & Thinesh’s 2-0 lead to win 3-2.

Anthony & James and Sarah & Sam choose the drone as well while Lauren & Joanne choose cheese. Aarthy & Thinesh also want to choose the drone.

Dave & Irina, after sorting out Dave’s French “J,” correctly map out their moose and can now drive to the Pit Stop at Kakabeka Falls where they claim their win and a trip to Venice, Italy.

Aarthy & Thinesh arrive at the drones, but learn that the “Detour is Full” and they have no choice but to go to the cheese Detour.

Lauren & Joanne are struggling to get the correct cuts of cheese and are forced to find another wheel after wasting their first one. But Aarthy & Thinesh quickly get the hang of measuring their cheese.

Aarthy & Thinesh are already vacuum sealing their cheese while Lauren & Joanne grow frustrated and argue. But after a check of their packaged cheese, Aarthy & Thinesh are given the thumbs down on 16 of 32. Lauren & Joanne get a check and they need to re-do eight of their cheese.

Lauren & Joanne get the thumbs up and Aarthy feels their impending elimination.

Over at the Pit Stop, Sarah & Sam check in as Team #2 while Anthony & James are right behind them as Team #3.

Lauren & Joanne step on the Mat as Team #4. That means Aarthy & Thinesh are last and eliminated.

Episode Thoughts

Ewe, that was a horrible Leg! And no, it’s not because Aarthy & Thinesh were eliminated. I actually thought they were getting eliminated last week, knowing they did not make it to the Final 4. So I was already expecting it.

But this was really some horrible Leg Design and it appears it had a lot to do with logistics. The KOR seemed to be necessary just to make-up for the 17-hour bus ride that was obviously unavoidable for the location.

But looking back, the Leg seems to have been decided by who got the best taxi to the museum. Because the placements basically stayed the same the entire Leg after that with the only change being Sarah & Sam beating Lauren & Joanne at the Face Off.

It was just really an odd Leg. The entire Leg should’ve taken place in the Thunder Bay area with a simple HOO sign-up sheet at the Terry Fox monument. The staggered release times were obviously to allow teams to read the inscription for the tribute to Terry Fox.

But there should’ve been a Road Block at this point in the Leg or switch the Road Block with the Detour. Put the Road Block at the end and the Detour here before the Face Off.

The Shell V-Power Nitro+ Route Marker made me very nostalgic for TAR Philippines season 2 since they sponsored TARPH2’s P200,000 Leg prizes.

The Face Off was okay and I do like the added caveat this season of three options of challenges for teams to face off in. Jon’s commentary at the air hockey was kinda annoying lol. But not as annoying as Phil’s commentary, in person, at the Head-to-Heads lol

But, my main issue with this Leg: A Limited Stations Detour right before the Pit Stop?! But not only that. What is this New Rules Limited Stations Detour?!

Has that Limited Stations rule been there the whole time? Like, once three teams have attempted the Detour, no other team can try even if there is a “station” open? How about if a team switches Detours? Does that open up a slot or are they just going to take up another slot at the other Detour?

I have never heard of this before. Usually you either wait until a station opens up or you go to another Detour.

*goes to watch TARC6, Leg 10*

Last year, Taylor & Courtney chose the Fit Detour where Courtney & Adam and Dylan & Kwame were already attempting it. There were only two slots at either Detour. They debated whether or not to wait for one of the two teams to finish. They ultimately decide to just switch over to the flight simulator Detour.

It’s not like Aarthy & Thinesh misunderstood the rules or something. They explained that two teams were doing the Detour and another one already finished. So the three “stations” had already been taken. Under normal TAR circumstances, they should’ve been able to do the Detour. But I guess not.

It’s also a shame since both Detours were great. Especially the drone side of the Detour.

But okay. Even if TARC changed the rules this season, there definitely should’ve been another task before the Pit Stop. It basically dooms a team in the back of the pack if they choose the popular Detour. Obviously, Aarthy & Thinesh appeared to have a chance to pass Lauren & Joanne. At the same time though, this Leg essentially only had one task, the Detour. And both Detours were pretty great.

But in terms of competition, it really was nonexistent. A linear Leg with a huge irrelevant chunk and only one real task (the Detour).

My Subjective Team Rankings

Dave & Irina definitely delivered again this Leg. They were absolutely hilarious. From Dave trying to intimidate Anthony & James with his fake news axe throwing championship to his French “J” at the Detour, they were lots of fun. And also again, they backed it up with good Racing. Irina used her brains to solve the stamp task. And they had great teamwork at the drone. A really great and well-deserved win for them on this barebones Leg.

It’s sad to see Aarthy & Thinesh eliminated. They were definitely one of the strongest and most consistent teams on the Race. And it’s even more of a feat knowing they would regularly fall behind and also have typical bickering couple moments. But they would still finish strong and of course won three Legs out of nine. Even in last this Leg, they had an opportunity to just edge out Lauren & Joanne. But things didn’t go their way.

Now I do frown upon teams giving each other answers. But it was nice to see Aarthy & Thinesh acknowledge Sarah really did them a huge favor and thought to give Sarah & Sam the 4th spot if ever they had arrived at the sign-up board before them.

Sarah & Sam had a good Leg. But Sarah absolutely should not have told Aarthy & Thinesh the answer. It’s nice that she is very nice. But this is a Race of course. Still, Sarah & Sam are also a consistent team. They started the Race a little shaky, but they were able to really step it up week after week and have truly worked hard to make it this far.

Lauren & Joanne were the most enjoyable at the Detour with them freaking out about the cheese. Or at least Joanne freaking out about the cheese. There’s definitely a lot of frustration there knowing you’re in last. But it was great to see the sisters in a different, more interesting light than the usual we see from them. They are peaking at the right time with good momentum going into next week.

On the other hand, Anthony & James seem to have lost a little bit of their mojo. They have been struggling these last two Legs when before, we would see them calm, cool and collected. But they are definitely still in it. And any of the Final 4 could make it into the final.

  1. I am currently watching BB6. I don’t understand why everyone says its one of the best seasons when half of the cast are unbearable to watch. For sure it had Janelle but I can’t stand the Friendship alliance. But still it is much better than most recent seasons of BB. What are your thoughts on the season?

    1. It was a good season if you enjoy a divided house and hilarious drama and fights. But as much as I like Janelle, looking back, it might be a very annoying season lol It’s better than recent seasons I guess just for the nostalgia factor.

    1. I think it’s a completely different show since it had the original BB format. Hard to compare to the rest of BBUS since those were more of the competition, Survivor-like aspect. While BB1 was, like the other BB series around the world, more on this voyeuristic experiment thing with the public vote. Not much gaming needed.
